I also truly appreciate fighters (Oscar, Hearns, Tyson, Marquez, hell even Benitez) who said they’d fight anyone at or near their weight class and then did it but the problem with today isn’t the fighter, it’s the handlers
I believe the problem lies on both sides. Up n coming fighters may not have choices but when they reach certain level, they can voice opinions. And when they are at the top, demands can be made.
Promoters are content on matching their fighters easy and fighters have no problems hiding behind those promoters.
Oscar’s personal life was never an issue to me. Wtf do I care what he does outside the ring. Im just a blood thirsty fight fan who enjoys watching good fights. Oscar consistently faced top competition throughout his career, win or lose , and more young fighters need to be like him.

It's ruining my image of him as a boxer, which was a good one. :frown:
Not really his promoting that overshadows his boxing career, he doesn’t do s**t as a promoter, other people do the job.
It’s his coke addiction that overshadows his boxing career. Nobody thinks of Oscar as a promoter, they think of him as a coke head. He must have a lot of yes men around because if they really cared about him they would get him help.
Coke got his whole stable snatched away from him.
As a fighter though you really can’t ask for more than what De La Hoya gave. He simply fought the best.
Man was a boss, but he has NOT handled retirement well. Literally poster boy for how NOT to retire
Sometimes i feel like we forget just how much a warrior he was in the ring. And one the best win or lose resumes in history.
Without oscar, pac and floyd wouldn’t have turned into mega stars the last decade.
Naw, maybe just the younger boxing fans. I actually try to remember him as a boxer over a promoter. The guy had a cult like following when he was in his prime.
He shaped and catapulted floyd and pac’s popularity. Without him i don’t think they’d be that big.

I agree, every time his name comes up it's surrounded by negative comments. Alot have forgot just how good a fighter he was and he never ducked a challenge
I actually somehow missed a lot of Oscars career, i've watched his signature fights but I know him now, more so as a promoter. He seemed to be doing a damn fine job in the beginning, his fighters were well paid and people seemed to genuinely be very happy to fight under the GBP banner. Ever since Haymon and Shaffer, he / the company seems to have failed to recover to it's former glory.
Not yet, but I feel like it's getting there. His career had a lot of ups and downs but he was pretty much always fighting at the top level - I don't think he lost to anyone who wasn't a lock for the HOF. However, with each year that goes by that career he had recedes further and further into memory, leaving you just with the impression that people have of him right now, and it's not pretty. The time to straighten himself out was a long time ago now and he just never seems to get any better. As good as he was as a fighter he's a truly garbage promoter, the difference between Golden Boy pre and post Schaefer's departure is like night and day, I can't think of any other promoter who's had nearly as many disputes with their fighters as him. He seems unstable and out of his depth, and as such the other big dog promoters run rings around him. I suspect that at some point Hearn will fully poach Canelo from him, and then it'll be game over for Golden Boy.

Drug addict, alcoholic, pervert, pedo (paying off 15 yr old's family). This stuff has always been there, just his active boxing career covered it up. This kind of stuff always comes to the light. it is what it is.

This. Only young cats who don't remember the elite fighter he was.
And I'm a Hoyatard to the fullest. No shame. Best jab I've ever seen and I've seen a lot of film going back as far as film goes, and I've been boxing since 06 and have seen many gym wars and fights live.
Man i am a big fan of delhoya boxing i grew up watching him in the olympics to pros he was a beast in his prime and younger days guess thats why im all for golden boy Promotions over the rest.

I agree with what you say. For fans who saw him live...or those who anticipated his upcoming fights...that was genuine excitement. Boxing was important then and nobody cared who promoted who or who got the biggest check. You just loved to see your favourite fighters in action and boxing was an event. Oscar was one of the best and no amount of social media disrespect can change that.
Currently I think of him as a promoter, but eventually he'll be remembered as a very fine and accomplished fighter. Not Sugar Ray Leonard level, but the next notch below.

When do people regulate owners and bosses. It’s never your place to have those conversations with your employer unless you care more about him than your livelihood. It’s Eric’s and Bernards job to step to Oscar about those problems and I’m sure they’ve had fights about it. Who knows what Oscar is emotionally suppressing but before he can get off coke he needs to seek psychiatric care, it’s usually what folks are trying to numb that makes it impossible to escape the addiction. Dmx is a prime example, when he’s seeing a shrink he’s off the junk and when he’s not he’s doing eight balls like it’s a glass of water.

Lmao. I guess thats what i meant. Like whats your first thought when u hear or see his name?
GB promotions? Oscar the Golden Boy, or The Red Door?
