I don't think his 1 shot power is necessarily in a league of its own...all-time that is...but pfp, his right hand is about as good of a shot as any, ever, imo...but there are others in the same league I think...Jackson, Hitman etc...but if you took 50 top punchers ever and measured their punch, I don't think Wilder's would be off the charts tbh.
I think a big part of what makes Wilder so special with his power is with his height/athleticism it is hard to back him up and keep him off balance...so essentially the danger is always there for the right hand to come in clean.
Basically very rarely in his fights is someone really backing him up and not allowing him to load up on that right hand...part of why it is so good is because he is always looking for it...he is just always trying to keep his positioning to land that right hand, and with his physical attributes (size, athleticism, reach) it is pretty easy for him to stay in position.
He doesn't try to do anything else usually because he knows he doesn't need to...if you can't really back him up, you are fighting his fight...he will just walk around with you for 12 rounds and know that at some point he will be able to load up...and when he loads up it is usually over.
He says Tyson is overrated in a conversation about Wilder :lol1:
Can't make this stuff up
Hey fair enough. But c’mon u also write “Cant make this stuff up”, as if it’s an original witty joke. I’ll listen to ur points if u have any to make?
Which guys would have troubled him so far? I wanted to see him vs Povetkin att but it never materialized unfortunately
Yes agreed...good post
Never a Ward fan but I watched a lot of his fights when him and Kov 1 was announced...never watched that one but will have to give it a look some time.
To be fair, clinching is not really part of boxing...I never minded Holyfield's style of holding and even leading with the head/headbutting...because mixed in with all of that he could really box.
I never have really noticed that stuff you mentioned with Mike but I will have to give it a look...any fights in particular? Holyfield and Lewis were about 5-10 past his best imo...but Evander would have always been a tough fight for Mike...he was hard as nails.
Don’t get me wrong I loved Mike. I had his video game, rented his greatest hits. I think it’s still prize fighting and he generated what the public wanted. But the day after the Spinks fight I asked my old man if he thought there was anyone out there who could beat Mike Tyson? He calmly said “There’s a guy named Evander Holyfield...”. He took even odds in the bar when they finally fought too. Also books had Tyson favoured in the rematch which seemed insane to me. If u watch the Ruddock fights, Tyson was in tough. Still he was never the guy to really try and fight free of holds. I’ve seen all his fights, Mike likes to look at the ref when he wants to be split up. He was never really a dirty fighter early either. He didn’t sneak in punches or punch low, even for a short guy. I know he was dirty vs Botha, and the biting vs Holyfield. But getting that little distance was his bread and butter. Get separated a bit by the ref and then lash in again. It was usually always a 1-2. Not a barrage of punches a lot of people seem to remember. He was still younger than both Holyfield and Lennox. Tyson’s “Prime” was shorter than almost anyone’s. He shoulda got better since aged 20. He never learned any new wrinkles or adapted. If Tyson was at his best for such a short period at such a young age then all the other heavies that managed to keep their skill up over a much longer period deserve credit. Ud think Tyson’s first name was “Prime”.
Yeah, check that fight out when you get a chance. Ward was literally burying his head in Green's chest and going to work on the inside, he didn't give him any room to breath or get his shots off. It was a brilliant strategy
Ward was certainly a very tough and smart fighter...I have to give him that

Wilder has no skills, but great stamina, chin, patience, ring IQ.
Fury is better, no doubt, but can he avoid Wilder`s right hand for 12 rounds?
I don't think he can...I think he needs to hurt Wilder and try and stop him
Power is amazing. Skills below average. His power is his get out of jail card. without it nobody would of even heard of him. Everybody out boxes him so prime powerful fighters that can Box and put you down have been kept away from Wilder his whole career. And if you strongly disagree then please list the people ive forgotten about off his resume.

Underestimated aspects of Wilder's portfolio are his defensive reflexes, his solid chin, his impressive stamina, his patience, his usage of the pawing jab
Yes agreed...good post
You need to step to a puncher, especially someone who needs that space to step into and load up on that right hand. The way Ward fought Allan Green would be a perfect way for someone to step to Wilder. He wouldn't know what to do with someone on the inside

I think Tyson is overrated period. Don’t get me wrong I think that’s a compliment because that means people like him, as opposed to being underrated. Tyson never liked to fight out of clinches, he often looked to the ref to split them up. Tyson liked that bit of distance to slam into a guy with a 1-2. But grappling and fighting inside was never something he really did. Certainly not when u compare him to someone like Holyfield. Tyson liked to slam in and then look to get separated. I don’t doubt he’d be trouble for anyone early. But Mikes is more generic with 1-2s than dynamic with multiple punches in my opinion. If he was as good as a lot of people say he was, well then he shoulda been better than he was right? A young Mike would be tough, but still Wilder would hold the KO shot advantage in my humble opinion.

Can't make this stuff up
He was good.
But sorry to disappoint. He'd lose.
Fighters back then were using PEDs heavily. At least compared to todays boxing world.
Holyfield, Tyson, Lewis
I personally don't think Mike was using anything when he was very young...and to think that guys today are cleaner than those guys anyway..yeah I don't see that my friend
Wilder looked really bad until the final second of the fight. But that's the norm, he's the law.
Ortiz looked worse than the first time, no snap at all and slow as an old woman. He should retire.
Someone quick/strong that could get inside on him would probably be a nightmare for him...a prime Tyson comes to mind on that since someone else just made a thread about it...I think that would be all wrong for Wilder.
I can't really think of anyone at HW right now though that has anything close to that kind of speed/quickness to get inside...Ortiz is a decent example of that but imo his main problem is his age and also the fact that as a lefty he is always a sitting duck for that straight right hand and Ortiz just couldn't take that one tonight.
Basically watch the difference between Mike Tyson's power when he fought Buster...and then all of his other fights around that time...Buster's jab kept him at bay and negated a lot of his power...but if you let Mike get inside and load up, well your head might come off.
It is similar with Wilder I think but a bit on the inverse...his athleticism just allows him to stay loaded up with that right hand basically all night...he knows from that position all he needs is to land it once or maybe a few times.

Lol...anyone who saw a prime Mike Tyson would not be posting that gif :)

So yeah I don't think he is that 'bad' of a boxer...I think he just knows his best route to victory, and he is really gifted athletically to almost always keep himself in position...that is very very hard to do in a fight/boxing match...would love to see him in a with a guy similar to what Tyson was...who could get inside and really make him box off his heels more...Ruiz maybe? With that belly I just end up overlooking him...but he may be the toughest matchup for Wilder at the moment.
