I'm not sure if Patrick Day would've survived had the floor been softer but that loud thud and the way he hit the ground was really violent.
I'm not a fan of it because I think it can take away some explosiveness (especially if you don't train on it) but at the same time there seems to be no other solution unless they want to wear headgear and I don't see that happening.
I've seen some rings with thicker padding every once and a while too, you can generally tell when their feet sink into the floor.
The majority of MMA fights don't consist of CONSTANT blows to the head which is why you don't see many MMA fighters dying due to brain trauma. The fights are also stopped much quicker when a fighter is dropped.
Heres the thing. Ive seen boxing matches where they get stopped over something simple.
MMA? LOL just bleeeeddddd! Im like man they should really stop this. Dude is lost so much blood its unreal. Cant see, falling all over the cage and they let it go. Chit is pretty crazy.
Make the canvas marshmellows, give them pillows to swing, and we'll call the sport sarcastiboxing. Actually scratch that, just make a new boxing game. We'll go full on e-gaming, no ever gets hurt.
Well, except for the morons that die from a seizure due to not taking breaks.
Not really, Ive seen fights that I swore were over that went on. Chit is pretty unreal. Watch that fight I posted. Its a great fight to watch.

Spongy ring canvas will slow fighters down. Not recommended. The ring is springy enough, they don't need padding. Boxing is just a risky sport. It was the punch that killed him. For all we know he may have suffered damage in sparring that was undetected.
The Major issue in the sport is weigh in times. It would be extremely difficult to implement due to the fighters weight classes but boxing really should do fight night weigh ins. This would complete negate any need to cut weight, which I believe to be the biggest cause for concern when it comes to permanent damage.
It's common knowledge that it's dangerous for you to dehydrate to that extent, only to rehydrate in a matter of hours. Not only that, studies show that the fluid around your brain reduces with dehydration. And when your job involves getting hit in the head, I'd imagine that the two don't mix too well.
Like I said, I have no idea how they would implement it, or who would implement it. The only way to do it would be for all the governing bodies (major WBC WBO IBF) to come together for this one rule, for the safety of boxers, and make it mandatory for any sanctioned fight.
I watch the fight and i saw a few shots to the back of the head on Mr Day. I think this is more of a danger than anything else. We really need to eradicate that throughly from the sport. Whether its accidental or not, shots to the back of the head esepcially when two fighters are clinching and were being seperated by the ref should be a NO-NO.
You really think the floor killed him? what about the hundreds of punches. Get out. Thick mats kill fighter mobility making it worse. They need to shorten fights.
I think it turned a regular KO into something much more. You see how hard he hit the the floor? His body went limp, it's almost like getting body slammed.
Put it this way, if you fell like that at minimum you're going to probably get a headache afterwards. Sometimes it's that little extra to take something over the top
this is why i never criticize floyd for forcing guys to wear pillow gloves against him. getting punched in the head doesn't hurt and has negative side effects. did you guys know that?

One of the best ufc fights ever btw.
Ufc is more safe tho... No 10 counts. Fights end very quickly

Tbh this a dangerous sport. Its gonna happen. They stopped 15 rounds, added safety precautions and people still died.
Not to mention guys dying in the AMs with headgear.
Its gonna happen.
A *possible* solution is having a 2x2 clear sticky pad on the back of fighters heads. Some protection in case of direct contact with canvas.
Doesn't impede the game because rabbit punches are illegal anyway..
Please don't shorten fights again... was there an objective study done that found shortening fights from 15 to 12 made a difference?
I think fights should be 15 if they are unifications, 12 if they are defenses, and 4-10 otherwise.

Boxers get hurt in am a lot too.
