He had a massive following, took on all comers, and only lost to the best. How do you guys rate him?
He good in his prime. I think he mauls, wrestles and outmuscles the likes of mikey and marquez at junior welterweight..
Definitely would give you hell, as he did with floyd in the first few rounds..
only the best ones were quick enough to get him out of there.
He’s quick on his feet, and tremendous body puncher. Floyd was just very good fighting on the inside as well, and could take a step back and dart him with that right.
So if you slow on your feet, (even floyd was very fast) chances are you gonna be grabbed by prime hatton for some pounding.
Hatton was a very good fighter IMO, maybe because I'm a fan.
But he beat pretty good fighters (list below):
Jon Thaxton - His first significant win, with a huge cut in the first seconds of the fight
Vince Phillips - Which he KOed Kostya Tszyu and Micky Ward
Kostya Tszyu - This fight IMO uppercutted him to stardom
Luis Collazo - Although he had a hard time, if not mistaken he just went up in weight and his first fight in the US since 2000.
Jose Luis Castillo - Castillo was 33 at the time, so he wasn't old. Hatton broke Castillo's ribs
Paulie Malignaggi - He stopped Malignaggi and the fight wasn't even close at any time.
He lost to the top 2 fighters of his generation - Mayweather and Pacquiao. His fought his last fight after a long layoff, and he was still doing good in the fight, with a coach that wasn't even good and a lot of abuse to his body.
He abused his body too much to stay in the top league for a long time.
Had a very short prime.
Relied on his ability to dehydrate 20 lbs and have a weight advantage on his opponents at 140.
He started saying he was having a hard time making 140, his first try at 147 was vs Luis Collazo and many people thought he got a gift that fight. The whole idea was he would be stronger at 147 not having to cut but he sucked against B level fighters without having a weight advantage so boiled back down to 140.
When fighters cant really fight at more than one division then they just arent that good. He had a huge fan base, even non brits. Everyone was building him up as the guy to beat Floyd. Floyd actually had way more hate on the forums back then. Now days almost everyone will admit hes one of the best of this generation, even if they dislike him or have other criticisms. Back then though it was he was a fraud and scared of basically all the fighters he ended up fighting.
People still make this big deal of Floyd beating Hatton at 147 as "not his best weight" but Floyd wasnt a large welter then and never became a large welter. Floyd was 150 or less fight night. Hatton was the heavier guy fight night. Hatton was also the guy who struggled making 140 which is why he tried out 147 in the first place but struggled when he was the smaller guy vs Collazo. The 147 weight was BETTER for Hatton in the Floyd fight, its an extra 7 pounds he didnt have to cut. Hatton was like 160 in the ring. Floyd would be the same size regardless if they fought 140 or 147.
It was criminal how Kostya trainers called of the fight in the beginning of the 12th.
It was a pretty even fight up to that point and that was at the end of Kostyas career.
He gets about the right amount of acclaim as he should.
It is because Hatton had to really pull it out and he struggled with the extra 7lbs, thats why he said he felt sluggish at the weight, so all the fans ran off with he was no good at WW, he wasnt, but he didnt fight Floyd at true WW, he fought him at his best fighting weight 153lbs all his JWW fights were 151-153, Floyd was said to be 151 that night.
Ricky was tough guy with a short peak, you have to be an exceptional brawler to beat the very best, skills will always beat that come forward bull rush type.
Agreed. He gassed badly in that fight. I think he underestimated Collazo’s toughness also, after he dropped him in the first round, he was loading up too much looking for the KO. Collazo weathered the storm and utilised his natural size advantages to really put it on Hatton throughout the latter rounds.
I still don't know why or how he and Cotto never fought each other. Maybe that's a fight Cotto never wanted.
I think Hatton was a great fighter, who fought Tszyu at the right time , though could have been better had he lived a disciplined life.
He had a massive following, took on all comers, and only lost to the best. How do you guys rate him?Very much overrated in my opinion and a hold and hit wrestling clinching mauling dirty fighter with his own referee in England. In England he could do no wrong and got away with a lot. He had some good wins and became a champion but never was as good as some rated him in my opinion.
He also beat Kostya Tzu and gave Floyd hell. Plus he was doing well against Pac until he got caught cold. I just watched the documentary about his last fight on Amazon prime. It was interesting to say the least.
Gave Floyd hell? Really?
Hatton had obvious strengths and obvious weaknesses. Overall a pretty damned good fighter.
Luis Collazo...
I disagree, Hatton was well ahead after 6 or 7 rounds.
Collazo rallied late on and won some of the latter rounds clearly but it was too little too late.
That’s actually an underrated win IMO.

Overrated.... That tattooed Puerto Rican, I forgot his name, beat him before May and Pac did

45-0 when he faced floyd..but that is about it.
hatton ranking:
1. skills - C
2. speed - B
3. Power - C +
4. defense - C+
overall C+ fighter hyped and marketed well. floyd beat the best version of hatton and that's not saying much.
Good fighter, especially at 140. I'd say he probably gets the reception he deserves.
Do you realize his fight night weight against both Kostya and Floyd was the same 153lbs . = prime fighting weight , with a dry out he makes 140, with a little drying out can be under the 147 limit and be best weight 153.
Floyd vs Hatton was a case of Jnr WWs fighting for a WW title.
And Rickys true WW fight night weight against Collazo he was 158.
Floyd beat the best Hatton to ever set foot in a ring at his best weight, thats a fact !
Did well up against Floyd Mayweather, great underestimated Manny Pacquaio.
Overall I think he is abit underrated.
He could of had a more successful comeback of he was matched correctly 'Ricky Hatton was in a worse state that Tyson Fury, and basically jumped back in the deep end straight away'.
