more attention needs to be given to Ruiz.
Andy fought smart as hell. Picked his shots and played it patient until he knew he could capitalise. He could've had Joshua out in round 4 but I think he gassed out a bit and was probably cautious about getting dropped again himself.
All skill and strategy. I'd say he now has Joshua's number in a rematch too.
Joshua's biggest mistake was going in on Ruiz after he dropped him with that hook. Ruiz has faster hands as we saw and is a brawler but can only make that count inside. Joshua let him do that. I reckon if in London he would have been more cautious like with Parker but was eager to impress.
Do you think Fury or Wilder would ever get involed in the exchanges AJ got into tonight?
Fury is too smart to get into a brawl with a 6"2 fat guy and so is Wilder.... I just don;t think AJ knows what his style is..
That's my main take-away with Ruiz. Intelligence and composure. His punches weren't terribly accurate, or even all THAT strong. His movement wasn't anything special, nor was his defense. BUT, he was really godamn smart and did the right things at the right times.
Clear that his strategy was to tire him based on AJ;s cardio issues in the past. He was in Joshua's face at the start of every round. When he got AJ tired, he kept picking at the body so he couldn't recover. I had a feeling AJ wold punch himself out after the KD, like he did with Wlad and apparently Ruiz sensed this too because he countered at the PERFECT time to KD AJ. Really brainy performance tonight.
Yeah well said. I was impressed with the intelligence more than anything. I’d have to say he and Fury are the 2 of the only established heavyweights I’ve seen with a real boxing brain recently. I’m sure there’s some coming through and Usyk moving up.
I guess that’s the difference between guys like Fury and Ruiz that have been boxing since they were little kids compared to guys that started late. Their boxing brains can see them through against these big athletes that aren’t natural boxers. Of course you still need to put it together in the ring.
But yeah, impressive stuff from Ruiz. Looked like a guy that’s been around it forever.
Being dropped early is the best thing that could have happened to Andy Ruiz. Joshua got reckless and gave him probably the only chance Ruiz had of landing his fast and compact punches and hurt him. Joshua showed a lack of experience by not realizing that Ruiz wasn't actually hurt at all. That exchange sealed Joshua's fate.

Yeah I was actually annoyed with Ruiz because it looked like he was letting Joshua of the hook but it’s evident he knew he had his number and could take his time, so fair play to him. Showed some great intelligence there.

I knew Ruiz would give AJ plenty to think about. He's tough as nails, and AJ is pretty soft man. Big respect to Ruiz. He fought smart. I think AJ will struggle with any decent puncher and somebody who isn't afraid to trade with him
He fought exactly like i pictures him fighting, especially after watching his previous fight against big stiff looking Joe Hank, he fought on the front foot. This makes someone who doesn’t have great stamina to be uncomfortable. He recovered well from his KD and was still alive when Joshua tried to go in for the kill, massive respect to him because he was one of few boxers at HW who actually looked at the opportunity rather than cry about money.
Agreed, Ruiz stayed calm even when he had AJ hurt, that showed great poise. He did it methodically and would probably use the same approach, although I think the factor that a lot are glossing over is the speed. AJ just looks slow and Ruiz hand speed was looking like Chris Byrd compared to him.

Joshua dont have any heart. This was proven tonight. Ruiz wasnt afraid of his size and was bringing it. Anthony Joshua isnt nothing more than a Bob Sapp 2.0
