I'm not personally Canelo's number 1 fan. I'm a bigger fan of the sport than of any particular fighter. Look at this example I'm about to set. It took Mayweather and Pac forever for their fight to be made. Wilder and Joshua is taking another eternity. It seems as tho when you have a clear nemesis, the fight will always marinate til the end of time. Canelo at his young age and career has already done that twice (GGG) and moved on with his career and another dangerous opponent in Jacobs. Who else does that?
You could make an excellent case depending on what you think you saw in his 2 fights with Golovkin. I have him one loss and one draw. To be #1, at least for me, he needs a clear win over that rival.
You shouldn’t even be considered #1 when you’ve been busted with PEDs
Let’s not even get into preferable scoring from judges and Ws that should have been Ls that would make his career be judged completely different if he was judged like every other fighter
Yes his resume is outstanding but he been the Mexican Golden child since the start so he has the clout not only to get the names in the ring with him also has the pull to fight them when the deck is stacked and most advantageous to him whether it’s ( Age /size / inactivity/ Preferable Judges ) Canelo rarely fights a opponet when their at their best or on a level paying field.
Canelo isn’t anywhere near the best fighter on the planet and anyone saying otherwise is either being dishonest with themselves or blinded by fanboy love they have for him.
I really don't mind Nelo being no1 as he has taken risks. He might not even have beat the guys he took risks against or looked as good as other pfp candidates. But I think he should be rewarded for taking on the best, even if the best were overated.
Even though I think GGG beat Nelo twice. It wouldn't be fair to have GGG above Nelo on paper.
Even though most think GGG has 2 wins, or at least a win and draw h2d unofficially over Nelo.
Just like I think Pac should have been no1 over Floyd, when Pac was beating better fighters than Floyd and taking more risks, but was still no2 pfp?.
His level of opposition is right there but dominance is also one the factors to consider. Then you have a mythical h2d match-up. Canelo is right there but he's not #1 yet.
If this is based on comparing resumes only, then Canelo it is.
its is choice of loma, terry or canelo, i know i would favour the ones not suspected of ped use, when its this close.
and lets not forget the resurgent Kovalev, just because ward whupped him, doesnt mean hes not an elite.
P4P isn't about who has the best resume. That is just a factor you consider.
P4P is about who would beat who if weight wasn't a factor.
The fighter who is the most skillful, and best P4P currently is Loma.
The fighter with the best resume currently is Pac.
Canelo is young, and improving. He has even greater things ahead of him. Certainly he will have the best resume in boxing within the next few years. But he will never be a better fighter, in the P4P sense, than Loma. He just isn't improving fast enough.

Facts & he will go after a slick Andrade, or even Saunders. Alvarez hasnt been dropped either & he has the most arsenal in boxing right now. His resume will end up having more names on it too soon.
Exactly. The way boxing is set up nowadays, he wasn't even supposed to fight GGG yet let alone twice already. We won't see Wilder Joshua for another 2 years minimum.
He has the best resume for sure and that absolutely should play a huge part in a p4p discussion. Loma and Crawford may have the slicker skills from a purist standpoint but, like it or not, agree with the GGG decisions or not, Canelo should be ranked number one. Not sure what else would be required of him?
Very well said. And this is not from a nationalistic stanpoint as I am a Puerto Rican from Philly (for some reason people root strongest based on nationality on here), but considering all the facts, he is waving the flag for boxing and we should all stand behind him.
I like Canelo and he is my #1P4P for many reasons. He holds some of the biggest names on his resume , Mayweather, Cotto,Mosley GGG twice, and Jacobs. Not all opposition was in their primes at the defeat of canelo but it was a battle of youth and power vs experience and skill. He Sells, and just about every other great fighter in the past sold tickets, "the people love them" Names like Duran, Leonard, Hagler, Hearns,Chavez, Mayweather, Tyson, Delahoya, Tito Triniad....the list goes on, The people loved these fighters which is why they Sold. Canelo is another one, He has more people that like him than Dislike him and Brings the Entire Mexico with him. No he's the not most skilled fighter in Boxing right now, Honeslty I think guys like Loma, Crawford,Saunders, Inoue, Russel Jr, and better natural athletes and posses better boxing skills than canelo in my opinion but you can say the same for fighters like Chaves,Duran, Marquez, these guys wherent the Strongest, Fastest,or most skilled fighters at the their time, but yet they are considered some of the greatest fighters to ever lace pair of gloves. Canelo is the most PROVEN boxer we have in the game right now and when you combine all these factors Yes He is number 1 P4P in the sport right now.
