The Canelo Alvarez-Daniel Jacobs middleweight championship fight had more than 1.2 million viewers watching across DAZN’s eight territories, the streaming service announced Wednesday. More than 700,000 devices – some on $20 monthly plans and some on $100 annual subscriptions – were tuned into the fight with more than 600,000 of the concurrent streams coming from the United States, a source with knowledge of the figures told ESPN, adding that the fight generated more revenue in new subscriptions than the roughly $48 million cost of the main event. The fight was the second of Alvarez’s five-year, 11-fight, $365 million deal with DAZN
if you wouldnt pay even 30 bucks to see wilder/AJ then you are a "poor" ...and the rest of those people you say feel that way are also "poors"....no offense its just true....if you are telling me you wouldnt/couldnt pony up even 30 bucks for wilder/AJ you are poor and probably not really a boxing fan guy....
thats a 80-100 dollar fight...no question
you say wilder is getting "bad advice"....but the people giving wilder advice are some of the most successful in the game...much more successful than eddie hearn that is for sure.....so dont feel bad for wilder....he even said "im betting on myself" so hes fully aware of his situation and what is going on.....he wasnt just told "dont take the DAZN deal" and just listened without understanding...that is very clear by his comments he knows his situation
roc nation also threw big money at cotto..and rigo too...why? because they wanted to bring credibility and show they could land big names....
if people are charging 80-100 for a ppv...and 5-8 people are getting together at a house to throw a mini fight party and splitting the cost...what do you think theyll do at a 10-20 fight? lol.....it will literally cost them next to nothing.....and everyone will be leaving money on the table.....
Lol - I'm not gonna flex on a boxing website. But people who have money are usually good with money. And won't pay champagne prices for a dollar menu deal. That fight in particular just doesn't really interest me that much.
In large part due to the fight being pushed back beyond when I wanted to see it. I may pay $10 for it but that's about all it's worth. I would have never paid much more than that for it. Just isn't a very compelling fight for me.
Also, if you don't want to watch GGG-Callum Smith etc, it doesn't mean you aren't a boxing fan. It might just mean you aren't really a big fan of those 2 fighters, especially if the price to view is $100.
Honestly man you are doing the same stuff here that I think you do with a lot of fighters - very tribally defending your guy and denouncing the other guy regardless of what the evidence is.
I just don't see how anyone objective can say that Wilder passing up $120 million for 4 fights, when he has maybe made at most $10 million for a fight? The money just isn't there for any fight he would have besides with Joshua, and maybe Fury. And Joshua should get at least 60/40 against him since Joshua rakes against anyone he fights.
I never thought I would see the day when boxing fans are pushing for high priced PPVs to succeed, especially when the alternative model seems to be over-paying fighters to fight. Bizarre.
I only remember them signing Ward, and from a marketing perspective that was an odd move, especially compared to signing proven cash cows like Joshua and Canelo as DAZN did. I could see the angle that it could pay off, but for whatever reason it didn't. I think they wanted him to be the new Mayweather but for whatever reason Ward never sold like Floyd.
Yeah and my only comment on DAZN is I am glad a platform came along that isn't overcharging for PPV type fights. They have a solid roster and to me that is their main selling point - they aren't fleecing viewers on the big fights.
Man honestly I feel bad for Wilder. I think he is getting terrible advice because his people are on the other side of the street as DAZN. He left a ton of money on the table there. I can't fathom a situation where he makes better money than that. Like I said all of DAZN's guys are getting paid better than before, so how can he make more on PPV? I don't see it.
And count me as one person who would pay $10 or so to watch Joshua Wilder. But I wouldn't pay $30 just for that fight. And I know a lot of people have to feel similarly.

remember when ROC nation was signing guys to big money to get guys to come to them? and then ward fights didnt sell?
im not arguing for the sake of anything...im just saying...if it works? good...but im not so sure its sustainable while making a profit...which is their goal and end game...not to burn money while making boxing affordable to fans
when i said "left on the table" i mean if the fans are willing to pay 80-90 for their fight why charge 20? thats wilders point...he feels the same amount of people that will buy on DAZN would buy at a higher price point...his whole team feels that way...aka leaving money on the table....i was implying the DAZN guys werent getting paid good money

Dude you seem focused on trying to have an argument just for the sake of having one lol. Just pointless really.
As I mentioned before, every big fight is on PPV on those platforms. I am basically a 'big fight' guy so every fight I would want to watch costs $70-$100. I would never pay that and it sucks because I would like to watch those fights. A big fight on DAZN just cost $20, and it was $10 for me because I decided to pay the annual fee.
If DAZN has a 4 'big fights' a year, I'm paying $20 per fight at the current rate, and getting all the little ones for a few dollars a piece. It is obviously a good deal.
The guys signed to DAZN seem to be getting paid way above what I felt they could get so far so I don't think much is getting left on the table. Whether it is sustainable or not is a good question.
But GGG never made sh.it really without Canelo. His biggest payday beyond that was maybe Jacobs or Brook for about $5-10 million. He is getting like $15 million to fight Steve Rolls lol. A similar fight with Wade and GGG got $2 million.
If you want to keep supporting the big money PPVs that is your prerogative, but charging that much for the fights you really want to see means I never got to watch Wilder-Fury, Khabib-Connor, etc live. And I would have liked to.

but you are out here talking like pbc. hbo and top rank have been pumping out the ppvs in the last few years...they havent....
and i highly doubt espn and pbc will stop provided the fight warrants it...
im not against it...but they are going to have to prove its sustainable....theyve had only one ppv worthy fight so far....and will fighters be ok with potentially leaving money on the table if the fight is big enough?

Hey man I am just glad to see a platform put out some decent content for a decent price...with a much reduced PPV price. That's the key for me.
I see the potential downsides and I don't think DAZN is perfect by any means, but the pushback against it/against eliminating PPV is strange to me.

the amount of ppv fights showtime and hbo(were doing) were very mininal over the last few years
you basically had canelo on ppv...and one time they experimented with golovkin because they invested in him and wanted to see where they were at...then you had kovalev/ward which should have been successful(but because the general US public is dumb and dont know what is what)....overall there were very few
and with hbo/sho you also get shows and movies and good docs
espn went app but still did ppv when it came to crawford
espn and pbc will still go ppv when it calls for it...they arent going to just stop cause some other company is trying to eliminate it...emphasis on the "try"...it may only be a matter of time before DAZN just becomes one of them

Bold is key, as is cancellation numbers/attrition/turnover.
I know for me, I booked a month for $20, looked at the calendar out to July and wasn't impressed at all. The WBSS would be the last I get, then I'd let it lapse.
SO basically, if they can only give me quality once a quarter, that's $80 and still less than the $99. If the third or fourth quarter turns out to be garbage, that's $60 and still more worth it.
It might only be a few dollars, but I have a BIG issue paying for a year of something I don't use for a year. I only did the Nintendo Switch yearly for the cloud saves, otherwise it'd be the same thing. Cloud saves are a constant value. I don't yet see constant value out of DAZN.
I hear ya on the constant value - that is certainly going to be up in the air for me. I didn't think I would buy DAZN until GGG fought Canelo again or maybe Andrade. But I bit the bullet and popped for the annual price on the night of the Canelo Jacobs fight.
Didn't realize it at the time, but I was excited to get an Usyk fight and Andrade Sulecki in the next month or so, and also to get the GGG fight to see how he is looking. And then a Joshua fight and also the WBSS as you mentioned. All those fights/replays basically in a one-two month period.
Obviously Usyk got cancelled for now so that puts a damper on things. But I guess I'll see how valuable I find it in the coming months and year. I would say that Canelo-Jacobs fight was worth about $15 to me. Andrade-Sulecki $10 and a GGG fight $10 (for me).
That's a pretty solid return for 2 months worth of fights, but as you said they may end up having some pretty bare months (especially depending on someone's preference for a fighter/fighters). So it will be interesting to see how valuable I find it.
Very possible about it being dangling bait - I can only speak for myself but if the monthly price goes up any and the quality doesn't, I will most likely not be an annual member. And if they start charging extra for big fights I will have to re-evaluate as well.
It is still nice to have an option to pay $20-$30 for a big fight vs the usual PPV price though. We will see how it all unfolds. I never have really had Showtime or HBO. Part of the problem with those models for me is they always charge PPV for the big fights, so you are paying the annual fee for the lower level fights. I just hate that model, feel like I'm getting ripped off.
So yeah I'm not really shilling for DAZN as much as I am hoping someone can come in and pull off what they are doing right now, and eliminate the high priced PPV model. If Fox comes out with a $6 monthly app and I get to watch all those guys at WW fight with no PPVs, that would be great.

$80 for Khan v Crawford here in Canada. See how that turned out. There’s nothing like seeing a big fight live in person, but u get gouged all weekend long in Vegas. I wonder if these days all hotel rooms are jacked up for cinco de mayo weekend no matter how early u book? I’m fine with anything that seems to make most fans happy. The more popular DAZN gets I still expect prices to go up though. Companies don’t strive for monopolies to reduce costs to its customers. But a good reset of the way things used to be hopefully works out for us fans.
Good point - I think we should all be happy that DAZN is coming on to the scene and providing some competition now to the existing system, which is lowering our costs in a way, and hopefully that will continue.
But I think wanting DAZN to take over is a bit of a dangerous proposition. Even if they do become somewhat of a monopoly they will always have to watch those prices in a way though. It's not like watching boxing is the only entertainment option we have. If they price it too high, even if they have all the talent, people will just stream it illegally or watch it online the next day.
i hear you...but what im saying is this
i see people here, mostly aj/dazn fans, saying things like "the americans want u to pay 90 bucks for a fight while DAZN wants you to pay 10 bucks...and theyre rooting for the higher price they are so dumb"
as motorcity pointed out....DAZN has had one ppv caliber fight so far...just one....lets see how many they continue to do at such a bargain price.....because sooner or later theyre going to be leaving money on the table
you act as if the other competition is rife with ppvs now...hbo no longer is in the game....the only ppps espn is doing is crawford.....only ppvs pbc is doing is wilder in a big fight and spence in a big fight vs a mexican...its not like these guys are nailing you with ppv after ppv either......
this whole "charity for the poor boxing fan" thing i dont believe can last forever....if it could someone would have been doing it already....to me its them dangling bait....reeling some people in....yeah i get it..it has appeal...and if they keep it this way it could probably do well....they needed subscriptions fast....lets see what they do once things settle in
you can get showtime and fox sports on their own for about the same amount of money right now...
Very possible about it being dangling bait - I can only speak for myself but if the monthly price goes up any and the quality doesn't, I will most likely not be an annual member. And if they start charging extra for big fights I will have to re-evaluate as well.

No doubt - I think the competition with PBC and ESPN+ is healthy in a way because they all have to compete with one another now, so they have to compete on cost and quality.
I am not really hyping up DAZN as much as I am any streaming service that would eliminate the PPV model. For me personally the PPV model is just a big inhibitor in watching the fights that I really want to see. Would have enjoyed GGG Canelo 2, Kov Ward 2, Spence Garcia, Fury Wilder etc, but bought none of those because the price wasn't worth it.
If a service can come out and provide those big fights for a fraction of the cost, I would love that; if it is DAZN or not is not important.
I would really love to see different streaming platforms competing with each other. I like ESPN+ as well but the downside for them is they are charging more for the PPV fights.
Personally I agree with you that the opinion of DAZN seems to be very tribal and it reminds me of the conversation around certain fighters. Some people seem insistent on hating on it for whatever reason, that any valid criticism of it falls flat. And truthfully there is not a whole lot to hate on DAZN (or some of your other main targets Curt :0) right now.

They've had 1 PPV quality fight. Let's not overexaggerate. The majority of the months have been lackluster. The middle of April until June 1st is the best run they've had. During the same period they've both existed ESPN plus has put on more and better quality boxing.
1 - past performance is irrelevant - people are starting to pay in to DAZN now because they feel the pay off is worth it. We will see if that pays off. But I certainly feel like $100 for a year's worth of good fights, and probably a few great fights, is a good deal. There are quite a few fighters I want to see on that platform. Not a ton on ESPN or Fox.
2 - as you mentioned ESPN+ is cheaper monthly and has more content. I bought it a while ago for Serie A games and other things. But DAZN doesn't charge extra for the best fights. You can argue they will, but right now they don't. Right now it is a good deal. We will see how it goes.
I can't think of one ESPN+ fight I have wanted to watch. If there are some I have forgotten them.
But I wanted Canelo/Jacobs, the Usyk fight, Andrade Sulecki, wanted to at least tune in to GGG to see how that goes. Probably see how Joshua looks. That's about $50 of value in under 2 months.
They aren't lowering prices. This is already temporary. They've already doubled prices in less than a year. They'll eventually raise them again and/or charge extra for premium fights. Nobody is in this game to lose money. They couldn't even sustain the losses they were at for a year. That's why they raised the price so quickly.
Dude I'm done talking to you. THEY ARE LOWERING PRICES IN THE SENSE THAT THEY ARE CHARGING $100 A YEAR FOR MANY QUALITY FIGHTS, MANY OF THEM PPV QUALITY.
If they end up doing what ESPN+ is doing and have a higher monthly price while also charging for other fights - then yeah I would probably change my opinion on them. It hasn't happened yet and I have heard no indication that is it going to happen. Have fun with your pity party and your own reality though.
You can argue with yourself as much as you want to about why DAZN is so terrible. You either aren't capable of understanding what I said, or are deliberately trying to twist my words around, and in either sense I don't have any time for it.
i have no issues with DAZN...i really dont...but watching some of the rabid defenders of it...it reminds me of people who lose logic when it comes to defending some of their favorite fighters
some of you seem to talk like DAZN is trying to do some noble thing to help boxing fans...like they wanna make everything cheaper for us somehow at the expense of making money for themselves...i assure you that they dont...theyre in the game for same reasons as anyone else
theyre piggybacking an existing idea and trying to bring a different genre into it....it might work...it might not....it might not be possible for them to keep things the current way and at the current price...and keep it "affordable" for the common boxing fan....we shall see.....but remember...they arent in the charity business...they are out to make a buck like everyone else
No doubt - I think the competition with PBC and ESPN+ is healthy in a way because they all have to compete with one another now, so they have to compete on cost and quality.

Wow, if DAZN keeps these numbers up then Eddie Hearn just might be able to keep his job yet. Once they get long term subscribers then it will be a definite game changer for DAZN. However, in order for that to happen both Golden Boy and Matchroom must sign better talent to its current rosters.
Hey man, the whole point about DAZN is it is lowering the costs, drastically, to watch boxing. If you want to still pay more money for the same general amount of content, go ahead. Don't see how anyone can complain about it but feel free.
My guess is you view this an all-hands-on-deck scenario where the enemy of your enemy is your friend. So you will support ESPN+, somewhat, because you view DAZN as a threat.
ESPN+ succeeding won't KO Haymon and PBC. DAZN succeeding could change the landscape of boxing programming.
I really don't see how anyone can hate that much on DAZN right now, but if you want to, feel free.
