“It’ll be his speed and power. A lot of people don’t realize that Canelo is the bigger guy,” De La Hoya said. “He’s smaller, but he’s thicker. He’s always been a guy with a thick neck, and thick legs. Canelo has always been the one to drop weight. Canelo walks around at 190, 185. So a lot of people will be very surprised when they step inside the ring and see the minimal difference in size,” De La Hoya said.
Finally confirmation of what's been rumored for years. So, yeah, you better believe Canelo will wind up at light heavyweight sooner than later, and when he does, I hope Canelo fans don't try to exaggerate how amazing it is that he's moving "up" so many divisions throughout his career.
In reality, in terms of weight, he is naturally the same size as the smaller light heavyweights like Dmitry Bivol. He's just spent his career fighting 2-3 divisions lower than Bivol turned pro at so he could fight either smaller guys, or other guys who are his natural size but who are generally not good enough to fight close to their natural weight like Bivol does. It basically guarantees you either fight smaller opponents, or if you do fight guys your size, it's generally the second tier ones who also drained down to a low weight class because they're not on the level of the best guys that natural size who mostly fight at 168 and 175.
I just don't understand why that is more impressive than actually just fighting at light heavyweight the whole time?
Nice assessment, but a lot has to do what many say, EXPERIENCE and RESUME.
People don’t realize that Canelo fought Trout, Floyd and Lara at an early age, and those guys were elite level, so a lot of adjustments and figuring out made Canelo exert more and focused on the limelight to throw multiple combinations that many fighters simply can’t do ACCURATELY, and created a narrative about stamina “issues.”
As Canelo grows, now in his prime, the intuition to not make mistakes improves and will Coast the way Floyd did in his post era.
His power is also less effective at the higher weights. He's not going to be a KO artist at MW or SMW. That's one reason why going up in weight is so tough, your power doesn't follow you as the bigger fighters can handle it. Your boxing skills have to carry you the higher in weight you climb.
Fighters have been cutting wait since weight limits were put into place over a hundred hears ago. It's just the way it is. Some fighters are more able to cut weight effectively, it gives them a bigger advantage, that's part of boxing. So walking around weight has little to do with what weight a fighter competes at. I bet people would be shocked at the weights some of the little guys walk around at. Little doubt there are 160 lb guys who can effectively fight at 126 or 130.
Canelo has a weird body for a boxer, more of a welterweight frame, but he's thick and carries 160 well. He just fought one of the biggest MWs out there and didn't look small at all. I think 168 is his limit though and he will likely find someone too big for him in that division if he pursues it.
i think Canelo going to 160 has been the primary reason that his stamina issues have become lessened. He's able to fight complete rounds now and doesn't fade late like he used to.
That's physically impossible. lol. At least name the fights you're referring to...
oh no wait, if you followed Canelo at 147. He basically looked like Danny Garcia at 140. As Danny has gone up in weight, he's more stockier in the upper torso.
A lot of the bruvas like making lies. Never understood the insecurity. I mean we all know the Charlos were born femalesWhy are you flaming bruvva? Now being a bruvva yourself you should no better. You heard Oscar. He said that Canelo weighs between 185-190 lbs between fights. So after he makes weight, it's hard for him to cut weight the day following the weigh in due to his stocky build.
Mikey garcia who is 5 foot 6 walks around in the 170s
Mikey isn't exactly shredded on fight night, either. He should really control his diet better, lol.
When he was cutting all that weight to make 154, he was rehydrating up to more than 30 lbs on fight night. He used to be walking in the ring at 185 lbs as a Super welterweight.
BS. How do you know Spence walks around at 180. Have you weighed him? I say BS. Spence looks lean between fights and not much different than he looks in the ring. I doubt he walks around much over 160. Crawford might weigh 165 between fights because he walks around a bit fat. People tend to exaggerate these walking around weights big time as you are doing. A smart boxer always stays within about 15 pounds of his fighting weight. Mayweather was in the low 150s between fights and Pacquiao was below 150. I doubt Canelo ever lets himself get over 180 between fights and probably less than that.
Mikey garcia who is 5 foot 6 walks around in the 170s
Yes he is very muscular but 5 foot 7 or 8 is a very short middleweight. Sure, Mike Tyson isn't fat at 5 foot 11 and 220 so it's different for each man. I know what Canelo looks like at 160 and those pictures you show don't look like he would weigh more than 175 or 180 tops. If you think he weighs 190 in those pictures that's your opinion that I don't agree with.
I believe canelo walks around in the 180s
Im thinking you must have small bones or skinny a lot of running backs are built like canelo, shawn porter is only 5 foot 6 but weighed 180 when he played football and he wasnt fat.
Dog canelo puts some fat on walking around, maybe a good 12 pounds of fat, in those pics he is around 170s, on fight week he jusr saps water to make 160. Most boxers can sap a good ten pounds easy in the sauna and just rehydrate.
Spence said after the Mikey fight that he gets up to around 175 between fights and that he's going to keep his weight down from now on. There was also a pic of Crawford weighing himself before his move to 147 and the scale said 170. They're pretty solid guys.If they said that then I believe them but not other people. They may not be subtracting for clothes and meals. Boxers weigh in stripped down and hungry and thirsty. Then they eat and drink and gain 10 to 15 pounds in the 30 or so hours between the weigh in and the fight.
Not true if you have a thicker bone structure at 5 foot 7 which is Canelo height 180 to 185 is not going to make you fat the dude is very muscular with wide bones if you are an Asian with delicate thin wrists you will look fat to get to that weight at 5 foot 7.

Lol. Crawford walks around 170. Spence walks around 180. Khan walks around 170.
Casuals not knowing that in camps not only do you train for specific fights but you grind down AGAIN to your weight class.
These same clowns just proved that Canelo was even less in ring years past if Canelo is bigger now.BS. How do you know Spence walks around at 180. Have you weighed him? I say BS. Oscar is full of it. I have seen enough shirtless pictures of Canelo between fights to know he weighs no where near that much. A 5 ft. 8 inch guy at 190 is usually a fatso. He might weigh 180 in street cloths after a big meal. If he is so damn big he can fight the best light heavyweights why did Oscar insist on a 2nd day weigh in for middleweight Jacobs??????

Walk around weight has nothing to do with how big they are in the ring. Bivol isn't just taller but he's got a larger body frame than Canelo. Jacobs, Saunders and Andrade are all naturally bigger than Canelo and they are MW's.
It's sad that this has to be explained.
Some Posters just don't know shlt about boxing.

You really don't know shlt about boxing. Just off this post I know for a fact you've never played a sport in your life nor cut weight before.
