LIAM SMITH is gunning for a rematch with Jaime Munguia after the pain of missing out on becoming a two-time world champion. The Liverpool-born light-middleweight says he has an "itch to scratch" after being out-pointed by the Mexican hot shot in July as he looks to get back on track taking on Sam Eggington on Saturday. I’d probably pick Lubin by a close decision but it’s a 50/50 fight IMO, wouldn’t surprise me at all if Castano was too much for him. Castano is a very seasoned fighter, he beat guys like Spence and Derevyanchenko in the amateurs and has looked good as a pro thus far.
Kevin Cunningham is very keen on him fighting Castano next though, so he must see something Lubin can exploit. Good fight.
He probably thinks Lubin will be able to get his combos off and will be able to counter him, but Castano is very physical. He has a very good win over Soro and could have gotten the nod over Lara. Definitely would be a statement if Lubin is able to beat him.
Again though, the chin needs to be decent enough to deal with the top notch LMWs.
And I liked how Lubin was soaking all that knowledge in. He didn't look at Smith as some dude he just whooped and was too good to hear what he had to say, but he was all eyes and ears. Lubin took what Smith said to heart and he will take that with him the rest of his career.
Who would you pick between him and Castano if they fight next?

Yeah I seen that convo with Ishe. Great to hear an experienced vet giving wisdom to a younger cat. Smith talked a lot of sense.

Ishe Smith actually told him something he similar. He said watching film on Lubin, he sees a dominant fighter who sets the tone from round one but against Charlo he didn't see that same confidence. Lubin actually agreed with him saying I lay out my territory real early in fights but against Charlo he was a bit hesitant. Mentally he seems to be getting it though which is the most important thing when you get sparked out in round one like that. It could break fighters for good but Lubin has a good team around him. Real curious to see who they face him with next.

I think the occasion got to him a little, he looked quite passive in round 1. Didn’t look establish control of the fight. It was so short though it’s hard to tell.
A couple of stiff tests this year then he should be ready to go again in 2020.

Liam Smith is basically a European level guy who got very lucky with a Paper title and a payday against Canelo.
Not taking anything away from him, but he just is not that good.
You know, even the betting odds were less than 2 to 1 for that fight in favor of Charlo. I'm not convinced the fight happened too early for Lubin. He just got caught cold early on and couldn't recover. But maybe with more experience he has less jitters? That's certainly possible. I think by early 2020 he will be right in the hunt for a title shot.

Hopefully he can pull a Badou Jack and rejuvenate his career. I actually wrote Jack off after his KO loss, I’ve picked against him so many times and he’s proved me wrong. Even if he didn’t get the actual decision...
He evidently wasn’t ready for the Charlo matchup, he was only like 21/22 I think. In hindsight, they should’ve let him develop longer.

To me, it's not even the Charlo KO. He walked right into that shot and he was caught cold. Sh^t happens, but he got dropped early in his career against a journeymen. That is more worrisome IMO.
Jack got caught cold in round one but he proved his chin was good enough at the top level. So if Lubin does the same, he's going to be extremely difficult to beat. His offensive arsenal is better than anyone else's in the division. The way he is able to put together his combinations are top notch. Was a damn good amateur as well so he has good pedigree there.

My main worry is the chin. Is he packing glass or was he just caught cold? I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

I'm high on Lubin as well. He needs to prove he has a solid enough chin at world level, but if he does then skills wise he matches up with any of the top LMWs. He's a bit small and that worries me but as he gets older he should be able to fill in nicely to the weight class.
Last I heard of Vanes was him going on Don King rants and apologizing to Haymon and the WBC lol.
Gausha is a solid fighter nothing more, nothing less. But still a solid fight for Lubin all things considered. Basically, anyone that will make Lubin think his way through a fight would be a good test for him. Preferably, you want him to face off against someone that could punch to see how his chin will react to getting hit clean.

Gausha would be a good style matchup for Lubin, Gausha was a good amateur just doesn’t have a style that suits the pro’s.
Vanes is another good gatekeeper type, what’s happened to him? Last I heard he was going “Cage Boxing”.😂
I hope Lubin can fulfil his potential though, I was really high on him the prior to the Charlo loss. I was very confident he’d outbox Charlo, I even put £200 on him to beat him.😬

I mean I would still be fine with Gallimore, but think they probably go another route.
How about against Gausha? He didn't totally out of place against Lara even though he clearly lost, at least he was competing hard. The fight wasn't entertaining but easy to get outclassed by Lara and he simply wasn't.
Vanes is another guy who would be perfect for Lubin but who the hell knows what is happening with him.

Even though he lost that 8 rounder I’d still be happy with Gallimore as an opponent, He was a really good test for Williams in the fights following his KO defeat.
Trout is another good matchup, he’s the perfect gatekeeper fighter to test whether a fighter is ready for world class opposition.

Gallimore would have been the perfect opponent but he just got beat by Teixeira back in September. But I'd like to see Lubin with either a puncher, durable solid fighter or just a wily vet like Trout who still makes it tough for all his opponents.
I could see Smith vs Garcia next and that leading to a Brook showdown. But I also see Hearn waiting for Hurd to vacate to get Brook a title shot at 154.

I’ve still got faith in Lubin. I’d also like to see him face someone like Nathaniel Gallimore to test his chin.
I think Smith will face that Garcia who schooled Cheeseman next. They’re going to try and build a Smith-Brook PPV IMO. No great interest in that fight tbh

He's probably not as skilled as Smith I'd agree.
But he hits harder, can outwork and walk him down. He also didn't seem to get hurt by Smith either.
But overall he's picking up experience every fight he has. Most likely will stop Smith if they rematch.
Lubin should be able to handle business properly, but Smith is a big LMW and is durable and will have a few moments. The type of fight Lubin needs before he jumps back to the top dogs.

Good fight, be a great test for Lubin.
