He was rusty no doubt, 22 months of inactivity can take a toll on anyone.
He was confident and got hit with something that could have knocked him down, didn't happen by miracle.
Funny how people act like he has never been hurt before, specially against journeymen:
1) Quandray Robertson him down in the 1st round in his younger days.
2) Soto Karass hurt him in the 1st round.
3) Luis Collazo caught him with a body shot and had to get on a bicycle.
4) Josesito Lopez buzzed him with a right hand to the temple, had to survive.
But when he faced Garcia and Porter, he brought his A game and defeated them.
Just because of how he looked tonight, doesn't mean the same scenario is going to happen vs Spence/Crawford/Pacman.
Can he win those fights? Yes he can, he got skills and is an unified undefeated champ at 147 for a reason.
Can he lose them? Of course, those 3 are elite...he's not winning unless he brings his A game.
Thought that was what champions do, overcome adversity and win the fight.
Didn't that happened tonight? :beerchug:
He is a great fighter. You don't beat guys like Garcia and Porter without being elite. He just needed to shake off the ring rust.
Those guy's aren't elite man.
If your an elite you don't go life and death
with fighter's like Josesito. Ring rust and being
out for a few year's is one thing, but almost
getting knocked out by a journey man?
It seemed at 1st 2 me Thurman was treating this like a spar almost to shake the rust off but i dont think his right elbow/hand is 100% otherwise he woulda tried 2 get Lopez out of there after getting hurt, didnt do a lot, when he landed that right he didnt seem hurt Lopez really.Credit to Lopez, tough guy.
Crawford and Spence both KO Thurman with ease.
I also gave Porter the win in their fight. If someone is looking for a great welterweight champion Crawford and Spence are where to look. They absolutely crush average fighters and they don't need to overcome adversity because they dominate and kick ass consistently. There is good reason that Thurman says he will fight Pacquiao or Porter this year but not Crawford or Spence. MAN DOWN!
this board has so many thurman lover boys. joke. i dont care if layoff was 10 years. no excuse putting on such a shameful performance against an incredibly shop worn KO'ed many many times old subpar journeyman lopez. none. thurman needs to rethink his entire career. this was not a good performance AT ALL.I agree with this. He should have dominated the riverside punching bag from start to finish and stopped him if he was great. Yes he beat Porter And Garcia but not by very much and I don't think either of them are great either.
Sure it did.
Mr. Cheerleader
Where the logical counter argument for what I posted?
Oh right, you got nothing :beerchug:
Look at my post history I have always said the same thing.
Thurman is C+ and *maybe* B- on his best day
Absolute hypejob
I don't think Porter is a hypejob :beerchug:
I don't think he is great. I didn't think he was great before the fight and I think less of him now. I am aware he has been hurt by mediocre fighters and I consider that a weakness. He is too fragile for greatness in my opinion. A champion overcoming adversity can be a plus but when he has to overcome adversity from guys like Collazo and Lopez it's a big minus to me. Thurman didn't look rusty in the early rounds but he looked fragile when Lopez landed some good punches. Great champion Canelo showed how you take care of average fighters like Lopez. He didn't let Lopez win a single minute of a single round and he blasted him out early. I think Spence, Crawford and Pacquiao would all win every round against Lopez and stop him within 10 rounds and Spence would only need 4 rounds.
theres a pattern with run time.
he's dangerous early but he lacks stamina because he needs to make weight
second half of the fight he slows down.
He fought all the way through with Porter and both looked like they could have gone 15 rounds. Most fighters coming from prolonged inactivity show up poor, Mikey Garcia was getting touched up frequently in his fight back, Ward too if I remember right, for Thurman he was fighting a guy carrying real power though.
Mike Garcia wasn't kidding around when he said Lopez was showing real power in training/sparring. The guy was punching real hard and was very strong, shame he's such a bum.
Thurman that I remember would have ran through Lopez early, other than the rust I also think Thurman probably didn't train as hard as he should have because he didn't capitalize on a lot of openings.
Thurman has shown he can be hurt and overcome that adversity in multiple fights. I really wish he would clinch more, when he's hurt or needs a breather.
He wasn't at his fittest or sharpest today but whenever an opponent presses Thurman he's always in a good fight. Great to see the Champ back in action. #1 baby
