I know they probably pushed him to try to learn, being that De la Hoya is his promoter and Oscar knows that learning English will propel him to greater opportunities.
I'm starting to think Canelo might actually have a hidden learning disability?
I understand that any fighter, after 36 minutes of being punched in the head, is more likely to respond to an immediate interview in their native tongue than a secondary language.

Why single Canelo out when so many boxing champions don't speak English that well and need a translator for interviews. He just got a 365 million dollar deal so not speaking English well is not hurting him much.
He speaks English.
The real question is why doesn't Ryan Garcia speak Spanish & how did he know what Chepo was saying to him in the corner. I didn't see a translator.
He might understand it better than he speaks. Same as Canelo with English.
My nephew was born and lives in Spain and if i speak English to him, he can understand it perfectly but he can't reply in English that well. I think he knows how to if he really tries or at least very basic, but not confident with it.
He speaks English.

Am sure R.Garcia understands Spanish. He is of Latino heritage and am sure his family speaks the language around him. He himself might not speak it fluently doe. I have kids in the U.K. whose parents are from different countries and they speak their languages to their kids growing up. Those kids would reply back to them in English every single time, but they understand clearly what their parents are saying to them in Chinese, Jamaican or African languages.
Lance Pugmire once conducted an interview with him in English. He said Canelo can speak English, just that he doesn't want to make mistakes on camera which is kind of stupid since it works for guys like GGG.
Canelo was talking to Ryan Garcia for a bit yesterday and Garcia can't speak Spanish. So Canelo must be talking decent English.
Canelo already knows English. If you noticed, he doesn't need translators anymore. He understands he's just not confident in replying in English.
Definitely notice that. And this is why I knew and remember he started English lessons some years back. He understands it but the interpreter interprets his reply to the English speaking interviewers.
Didn't Cotto grow up in Rhode Island?
Nope. He was born there but grew up in PR, just like Margarito was born in America but grew up in Mexico and doesn’t speak English.
He is losing a ton of money by not. Sure, he has a huge deal, but Canelo could be a transformative star in the US if he spoke English. He’s got everything you want ina. Super star.
It actually helps his marketability in some ways, that he is a Irish looking Mexican who? Is speaking his native language with pride, and is not learning English. I don't think he needs to learn English to be fair, but he obviously knows abit! Just wants to speak Mexican.
I am sure he has picked up on some English, it is natural when you are constantly around English speaking people.there is no such thing as speaking mexican...its called spanish not mexican
I know they probably pushed him to try to learn, being that De la Hoya is his promoter and Oscar knows that learning English will propel him to greater opportunities.
I'm starting to think Canelo might actually have a hidden learning disability?canelo speaks english that he chooses not to is a different story
He speaks English.

Hahahahahahahahaha good comment.
He doesn't have too speak English. He's already the highest paid boxer, the face of boxing, has the highest sports contract, and is the undisputed MW lineal King.
I would much rather him express himself in his native tongue than to have to listen to him repeat the same learned phrases, like Drama show, good boy, bis show, Mexican style, regardless of the question.
Hahahahaha great answer.
Canelos life is boxing, he is pro since he was 15 years.
In México the public education is of a very low level.
He is learning since some months ago
I actually thought he was going through his English lessons thing some years ago. Cotto did it and he became a bit of a global boxer. Canelo who is younger should have done it. Especially because most of his opponents are English speaking boxers, which means their countries would like to showcase Canelo.
