First off, I like Ben Davison and I think he definitely deserves credit for aiding Fury in his recovery both physically and mentally. But you see some people like Tris Dixon suggesting he has done an incredible job as a trainer in the sense he has developed Fury as a fighter and created some tactical masterpiece against Wilder.
As a trainer did he really add anything to Fury’s arsenal? Fury used the same boxing intelligence and ring IQ he’s always had to befuddle and outbox Wilder for the majority of the fight. The tactics he used during the fight were exactly the same as he used in many other of his big fights.
And you can’t say he’s improved Fury as fighter either, he was far more polished and disciplined under Peter Fury IMO. All the skills he showed off against Wilder had been developed long ago by his uncles Hughie and Peter not Ben Davison.
Agree to disagree on fitness.
As for what did he add? Only Fury knows.
The guy isn’t some random prospect. He’s the lineal hw champion. He already knows how to fight.
What did he add? No one knows that. What did he do? Helped Fury get a win (ignoring the official result of course).
You think Fury would just wake up on his own and hit a heavy bag and shadow box himself into being sharp enough for a fight with Wilder?
I’m still waiting for you to answer the questions before.
Not only that, but just because he did something “new” doesnt mean it was something he couldnt do before.
At the end of the day, he got Fury as ready as he possibly could and put him in the best possible position to win, which...for all intents and purposes, he did.
So aside from preparing him physically and mentally he added nothing then.
That was my original point...
I’m not saying he should’ve added this and should’ve added that, I’m saying he shouldn’t be given credit for improving Fury as a fighter because he hasn’t.
He wasn’t in that great of shape, he was in good shape all things considered but he’s been in better shape before and will hopefully be in better shape in the future. He looked really gassed after 8 rounds and that’s why he started getting caught.
He was clearly in far better shape against Wlad that’s blatantly obvious.
I’m not criticising Davison, I feeled he performed to the best he could. What I’m asking is what did he really add to Fury as a fighter? Because it appears he didn’t really add anything.

If he's a great trainer in general and could develop a fighter from the ground up remains to be seen
But he has been great for Fury, even if that mostly means keeping him motivated, interested and been with him through the process of getting all that weight off. Keeping Fury motivated and wanting to train is a huge part of the battle.
He deserves a lot of credit for that. Whether he's a great trainer at this point it irrelevant. He's great for Fury at this stage.
Agreed. He’s been fantastic for Fury, especially mentally. I just feel some people are getting carried away
You dont think fury was in that great of shape? Are you serious?
You’re comparing him to the Klitschko fight?
Fury threw a bit more punches but he had to get off the deck twice. He also had to deal with someone who threw nearly twice as many more punches than Wlad did.
Not only that...wasnt Fury roiding back then?
Not only that but that was PRE his issues.
Fury had more in the tank than Wilder despite being MUCH bigger.
Honestly, I dont know how you can sit there with a straight face and say Fury wasnt in that great a shape.
Compared to a 135 pounder, sure.
But a 6’9 giant? Saying he wasnt in great shape is bordering on delusional and in some form of denial. I mean no offense by it but if you cant (or wont) tell someones fitness with it hitting you in the face, then there’s nothing anyone can really tell you that will convince you.
Instead of asking us why dont you tell us what his trainer could do better or what his trainer SHOULD do. What is it a trainer should be teaching Fury for you to say hes a good trainer?

yea. i don't think it's me who doesn't know what he's talking about. without davidson doing a great job, fury would have been knocked down a lot more than twice in that fight, possibly knocked out. the second knockdown came specifically because fury went against his trainer's instructions, despite being the better boxer.
in the same vein, wilder could have done much better if he had better trainers in his corner. wilder's coaching is trash. by themselves, they remove about 40% of wilder's true possible boxing ability.
On what evidence???
And again what did Davison add to Fury as a fighter?
And now you’re questioning people such as Mark Breland’s knowledge of boxing.
You’re an idiot, DKSAB...
What exactly did Davison add to Tyson Fury as a fighter then?
It sounds like you don’t know what you’re talking about...

I somewhat disagree, I don’t think Fury was in all that great shape, the reason Wilder had success was Fury began to gas after 8 rounds, he was in much better physical condition against Klitschko.
I think Davison deserves huge credit for aiding Fury’s recovery from being a unhealthily obese man into someone who became re-motivated and re-focused enough to become the best HW in the world once again.
But he didn’t really add anything to Fury as a fighter.

Before the fight i mentioned that fury like floyd doesn't need a trainer per se, they spot their own mistakes amd have an idea of what they're doing/going to do.
That’s exactly what I think! Fury’s own boxing IQ is what allowed him to outbox Wilder not guidance or instruction from Davison.
1st off the thread starter has given Wilder plenty of credit even though he looked like a rank amateur, clueless and he lost. Im sure if youve got so much credit to give to Wilder for being made to look **** you could afford some more credit to Ben Davison coach of the winner.
2nd of all Fury did loads of little things against Wilder that he had trained on because of Wilder and how he fights. That wasnt just same old Fury doing exactly the same thing. Yeah he twitches and stuff but thats his style, they are his techniques but thats not it, thats not the full package. He did loads of things to negate Wilders threats that he did differently against Wlad because he has his own set of threats.
I saw somebody questioning the lines he chose to walk back against Wilder compared to the Wlad fight. Wlad throws straights, Wilder throws wide. Completely different but somebody was scratching their head as to why Fury wasnt doing the same thing. Come on eh?
WTF are you talking about?
When did I give Wilder credit???
He looked pretty poor IMO, but he did have more success against Fury than any other HW was including Wlad. You could give him that I guess
Moronic statement...

I think that if you really understood what a trainer/boxing coach does, and you watched that fight, you wouldn’t be asking these questions or talking like this.
If there was such an award, Ben Davidson should get trainer of the year.

He helped a former drug using, suicidal, obese man prepare for Deontay Wilder and sharpened him enough to have him avoid all but 2 right hands.
Most top fighters have the tools but it takes a good trainer to sharpen them and work on them. This was one of Fury’s best performances to date and it’s no coincidence. His conditioning was top notch and he was supremely prepared. This is a 250 pound (ish) giant who’s preparation matched his will and that combination allowed him to not just come back from the dead, but keep fighting.
Fury believes in him and himself and sometimes that is the catalyst for everything in order to motivate and learn
