No matter what this man has done in the past or what people think of him, That's just tragic! Been really thinking about whether I should continue watching that brutal sport or not. Been a fan for more than a decade and it's the only sport I watch. I spend most of my free time watching and following the sport. Still with all these fighters getting injured and disabled for life I feel kind of guilty and as a fan I feel kind of responsible.
On one hand these fighters make a lot of money and they're all aware of the risks beforehand, on the other hand they all start out as kids and as a kid or a young man you refuse to think rationally, then you give up on everything else and focus entirely on boxing, it becomes all you know and now there's no way out. That's the way that sport is and it's a recipee for disaster.
What do you guys think? I've been thinking about this a lot more than I expected and just can't decide.

Honestly as a true fan of the Sweet Science, I think you should look at NFL and NHL, etc also. As many accidents and injuries happen there. I feel you but this sport needs support! Good Luck with your decision
I definitely agree with this. I doubt anybody would license him but you never know.
Zoo retired after losing to Hatton . Freaking Dirty Ricky rabbit punched him all night. Zoo almost went on a coma.
We've seen fighters with all kinds of styles get seriously hurt in boxing. Wilfred Benitez and many others. you can't completely avoid getting hit, you can of course limit the number of times you get hit, but that's not the only factor, it also depends on how your brain is wired, some people can take a pounding and never suffer any long term effects, and some get permanently damaged unexpectedly after a couple of punches to the head. It's unperdictable and that's what makes it dangerous.
Absolutely - one punch can make all the difference. I remember Kovalev saying once that after the Simakov tragedy he finally understood that he was literally taking his life in his hands every time he stepped through the ropes... that ish can strike anyone, at any time.
Even in a civilised, sane society where everyone had the opportunity to earn a good living doing ish they wanted young men would probably still fight and people would still pay to watch... like most of humanities guilty pleasures, making **** illegal principally has the effect of driving it underground, and beyond oversight or regulation... more dangerous in other words, even if fewer would be drawn to it.
I'm not gonna stop watching the sport but honestly this whole situation is making me reconsider whether it's worth it for me to be here on this forum, I've been pretty disgusted with the reaction of some of the posters on here.
Well that's another unrelated, but very valid point. Absolutely appalling behavior by some people here. Just schocking!

If everyone could be a defensive wizard and get rewarded for it then I'm sure they would, man. But just for a second imagine someone who's maybe a bit slower but throws with venom and who starts their career in Mexico - you think that ****'s gonna get them very far? You're talking about one of the elites of our time (who did in fact make his career as a far more offensive fighter) and comparing him to the day to day guys building their career.
No one wants to get damaged, but to make a career of it each fighter has to make the best of their natural attributes and talents and develop a style to maximise their chances of winning and that ain't the same for everyone.

I think it is bad to have people like Jim Lampley pushing for Men to fight Face First like Gatti while condemning styles like Mayweather's which is a style designed for taking LESS DAMAGE! If I had kids in boxing, as their Parent, YES I would want them fighting like Mayweather and damn sure not like Gatti (RIP)
This Sport is BRUTAL and with Testing so Spotty in the sport, you're taking big punches from guys you don't know what they might be on despite what Test Results are showing. Guys Cycling on and off of stuff before the testing during Camp Starts. So yes, BE BORING, be a DEFENSIVE FIGHTER forget what the Idiot Reports and Fans are saying. Fighters should be selfish and put themselves FIRST over what Fans and Boxing Reports are say who never ever boxed before!

Boxing is a brutal and barbaric sport. If you have been a boxing fan for long enough you will see some brutal fights where people die or end up disabled. I've also questioned my affinity after watching a fight live where a fighter died due to injuries where I was cheering for his opponent.
I've come to the realization that I'm a lifer so I try to help out with a little $$$ when a lesser known fighter is injured or dies(though go fund me).
Boxing causes a lot of pain and heartbreak to a lot of fighters but there is always that chance that they can make a great life for themselves and their family through hard work and talent.
These fighters just like loggers and fishermen understand the consequences of what they are getting themselves into. We as fans should respect the fighters better then to call every other fighter a quitter or bum for not fighting to the death in every single fight.
You're thinking like a poosy. Are you a poosy? If not you'll follow boxing like the rest of us tough men.
Wow. What a h0m0
Take up knitting
"Been pondering getting testosterone injections so I stop being such a hormonal pu$$y that weeps over grown men that get hurt boxing"
Man you dudes are cold blooded :lol1::lol1:

I understand your feelings on the issue, but consider this: people die doing just about any profession, as unfortunate as that fact is. Would you stop going to convenience stores because clerks get shot and killed sometimes? I personally feel like boxing has come a long way in terms of safety and, while improvements can and should be made, boxing is a very safe sport but tragic events can and will happen in all areas of life.
^^^^
This.
Cops get shot all the time but are we going to ban cops? A friend of mine was an EMT until Saturday where he died in an accident. Of course, there will still be EMTs. Every sport is dangerous and life itself is dangerous. The fighters knows what they're getting into and well, these guys who keep fighting after 40 are all pretty crazy imo. You'd have to be.
Well that's true for the most part but dying while doing a job someone MUST do for the rest of us to be able to live is very different than dying trying to entertain people by punching and getting punched in the head for 12 long rounds.
Firemen can't just stop doing their job because millions would die if they do, so it's either a 1000 firemen die every year or 1000000 civilians. That's a whole different story, same for policemen and other dangerous profession that are absolutely needed. Boxing isn't a need, it's only a form of entertainment that if stopped, nobody would get seriously physically injured. These fighters make that decision as young kids and they dedicate themselves entirely, then when they want out they can't and have to fight way longer than physically reasonable.

I like this post. You speak for me too. Green K.
Do some research and you'll find lots of sports have more injuries and deaths than boxing.
Hundreds of people die EVERY YEAR skiing. In Colorado alone, 40 people die every year doing it.
The stats of that sport is alarming.
