One thing I had hoped is that Eddie Hearn would be able to bring something fresh and fun to re-energize American boxing crowds.
It's still early but I don't see anything like that yet.
Philly still has a pretty great boxing scene last I checked. Not like it was in the 80’s but that goes with every city.
Thanks. I think it'd be great to see could be done there with all it's history.
Danny Garcia must be kicking himself right now
That Nkosi dude must feel like ass right now. He was the US Champ in '17 or '16 iirc. Being a notable amateur dude & losing your pro debut is some got you thinking about suicide type sh^t.
But nah I don't think Hearn put that much thought, research or scouting into these amateur guys he picked up. Hell I think he picked up that MMA dude off of his viral video from 5 or so years back cuz last I heard that dude was losing decisions in the NY Golden Gloves & not really setting the amateur world on fire or anything.
That Pacheco dude seems like an interesting pickup, but when I looked up his amateur results he had a ~75% or so win % in the last couple years in big events which doesn't suggest super stardom when most of his fights were non-open division fights. He's for sure a project pickup that they are gonna need to ease into the pro game.
It's not just that Nkosi lost...it's how he lost. Dropped twice and had two points deducted for holding against a guy who was 3-1 as a CW who was convinced to gain weight for this fight lol.
Hearn is a complete sack of **** but why are people rooting for DAZN to fail? Just like PBC. Demand better fights from everyone and stop your *****ing. REAL competition will force people to step up and make the fights that matter. I hope they all thrive.
Do you think they can turn it around?
It's not rocket science. Matchroom USA doesn't have any fighters the public cares about. If they sign fighters the public cares about, they can turn it around easily. Nobody knows who Danny Roman or Demetrius Andrade are. You can't sign a bunch of guys who were with low level promoters and think they'll suddenly be draws.
Anyone who thinks Eddie expects to sell out every arena starting out is a *****ing moron. In his early days in the UK he didn't come close to selling out anywhere. His recipe is to have fighters active so fans can follow their journey and go to the same cities on a regular basis and make people want to come back. When was the last time there was a decent card in Chicago? I would think most people in the arena felt they had decent value for money and if Hearn can bring a better card to Chicago in the near future then its likely those people will come back as well as a few more.
Whether Hearn will be a success or not will be judged over the next 1-2 years when he's gone back to cities a few times, not over the first few shows. One thing is for sure, love him or hate him he's by far the hardest working man in boxing so he has a great opportunity to be successful
I think there is. They just might be spread out more, bigger land mass over here lower population density & all that, + it would seem like we got higher prices for the seat you are getting based on what I'm seeing, but not 100% on that. But I know some basic fights people sh^t on here got $500-$1000 ring side seats. So you gotta do a lil extra to get there attention then in the UK.
I think one of the best things Hearn does is quality matchmaking & thats something few are doing that well here from the bottom to the top of the card. I see Bob has upped his game a lil bit lately with this ESPN deal & got a couple of his guys beat or "overly tested" lets call it lol. But if Hearn can do that here I think he can garner a nice lil base on that alone not to mention some new sh^t he can potentially bring to the US market that no one else is attempting as it goes with the overall atmosphere being discussed here.
Those ticket prices are the issue then tbh.
That is probably why your audiences seem a bit ‘German’.
I dunno if Hearn can change that. Make the gate cheaper and get feet through the door.
It should be affordable. It’s the working man’s game.
I don’t know why Eddie went over there. He’s taking a shot but is there such thing as a casual American boxing fan in the same sort of numbers that we have here?
The boxing is incidental. Over here people go to the boxing in their finery, drink, and go out afterwards.
That would probably only work over there with Irish fighters
U.K. football fans bring the atmosphere to the fights, every sporting event is an excuse for a piss up and a sing song, it doesn’t seem like you have the same culture
There’s an element of that culture too it. I’m from the U.K. but I recently went to an nfl game in America and outside the stadium is just a massive piss up. If Hearn can connect with those sort of fans like he did in the U.K. he might be on to something but it will take time.
I still back eddie. He’s signed a few interesting prospects for the future and by the end of the year he could have two middleweight champions. Not to mention the very real potential of Canelo fighting fielding on DAZN too.
I notice you refuse to address the content of my post, likely because you realize it's true that every Matchroom USA event so far has been a box office bomb.
Is there a way to mute a user? WOuld love to be able to avoid reading the ****e this guy posts day in day out.
Do you think they can turn it around?
Depends on the terms of his deal. If he gets the eight years, for sure.
He really does need that A-1 signing. A Canelo or something. If he can do that, that buys him time. Having an A-side guarantees him a couple good fights on DAZN and allows his prospects to develop. It's an uphill battle and it appears he sold the investor on his ability to land the big names. No matter what he says about Saturday's show, this is not what he expected nor what he hoped for,
Well, why don't they just play the darn song and I'm sure the audience will play along with it.
I've seen it sang in many places and people just can't help singing along with it.
"Sweeeet Caroline"
"da da da"
"Good times never been so good"
"so good so good..."
I am a boxing fan. I just want to watch good boxers fight. That's good enough for me.I hate all that singing the English love so much. If I wanted singing and fun I'd go to a musical.
The crowd sing and dance at musicals?
