It's being rumored Tyson Furys promotor Frank Warren and Wilders manager Shelly Finkle are discussing a potential showdown as soon as this December in either New York or Las Vegas for Wilders WBC world title on Showtime PPV
Tyson Fury vs Steve Cunningham did really good ratings here in America. The promotion for this fight will be great and Wilder is probably a better draw than Ward. The fight could do 200-300K ppvs.
It's true that it wouldn't sell a lot without some undercard help, but the same is true of Joshua vs Fury. In the U.S., in the U.K. it would sell crazy because of the domestic appeal. Fury said Wilder would knockout Joshua, so presumably a part of him doesn't want the fight to happen and ruin his payday. Unless he is truly dismayed by Joshua's (arguable) indifference toward the prospect of facing Wilder, which I tend to believe.
Wilder's last fight drew over 1.1m homes, going head to head with an HBO card and a UFC PPV. He wasn't going to fight on regular Showtime forever.
300k homes, @$65/$75, makes the US TV rights worth an easy $10m to Wilder, plus the live gate, and the international TV, and everything else.
Whether it's Wilder-Ortiz 2 or Wilder-Fury, everyone will sit down, and even if it's a "flop", and end up splitting at least $12m-$15m.
Wilder's already made it clear that he's not going to even talk about a flat fee with Joshua anymore. If Joshua doesn't come back with a percentage, Wilder will see how his first PPV does, and will likely grind out $10m purses with Showtime as the PPV audience grows.
And, with Joshua already sticking his neck out with locking in the double shot at Wembley, let's see how he massages giving up his IBF belt to not fight Pulev in Bulgaria.
Thats a lot of IFs. Still dont see that happening WITHOUT a GREAT undercard. Hes not fighting anybody of note and I believe the reason he did 1mill is cause he had a name opponent. Lets see what he does with vs Brezeale, then we'll get a better feel
Ok. If Wilder vs Fury was on PPV priced at say 60$ a pop how many buys do you think it would do? Just curious. Keep in mind that Fury has only fought in America once.
You don’t have to tell me how many times Fury has fought in America. Actually, that’s quite irrelevant. Joshua has never fought here and a fight in the US versus Wilder would’ve been on PPV. And Joshua does mediocre to bad TV ratings in the US.
If I had to guess, at least 300K buys and that’s being on the modest side. Wilder’s star power is rising very fast and his numbers reflect that. With the proper build-up, these two running their mouth and the right narrative, it does significantly more.
The first one, yes. Wasn’t promoted by the promoters and the fighters weren’t intriguing either.

I'm dead serious. Didn't Ward vs Kovalev only do like 125k?

An American fighter who is WBC champion getting 100k PPV sales is a success? It would be a monumental flop in my opinion and a clear sign that America doesn't care about Wilder.
Boxing here in the states isn't extremely popular as a whole and PPV is barely sustainable for all fighters even GGG by himself barely got over 100k ppv buys against Lemmy and Jacobs
Its sad really, that people would consider that a success.
Different markets Canelo can only sell 400K against Khan but still made more than AJ did vs Wlad which was a record sales for uk ppv
What was the last Showtime PPV? Mayweather vs Macgreagor?
PPV just doesn't really happen anymore over here. Unless you're Canelo. It seems big fights are just going onto pay channels.
Wilder should go build his profile first.
Nobody is willing to invest to put him up on ppv not even his group of managers and promoters and presenters.
Wilder's first million dollar purse was for the first Stiverne fight, 8 fights ago. And, unless I'm mistaken, his first ShoBox appearance was in his 26th fight against Kelvin Price; Haymon moves different, but I doubt Wilder was really seeing any money before that.
Wilder has fought on Showtime, because Showtime wanted him on their channel, and the money that Showtime/CBS had on offer, limited the incentive to risk money on PPV (take Showtime's $2m rights fee, or get the money to front the marketing of the event and look to generate $6m in PPV revenue to cover the expenses and clear that same $2m).
Wilder is now at the point where he's worth more than Showtime can offer to have him off of PPV.
Well, he should fight champions not unranked opponents.
