I was looking at this picture of Joshua and Breazeale and it struck me. One guy looks like an absolute gym rat and the other guy could conceivably pass for someone who's never picked up a weight in his life:

Now Joshua won that fight, but I'm assuming it was more to do with skills than just muscle mass but was that not a factor as well perhaps?
A good strength and conditioning coach can do wonders for a boxers physical fitness if that's an area that is lacking. It only seems like boxing that has this odd hang up about adopting modern training methods while every other sport has taken on these new methods and seen their athletes reach levels previously not reached in their sports.
people always think you shouldn't lift when ur a boxer but if done the right way it makes a world of difference....look up Mackie Shilstone......He has worked with Michael Spinx, Riddick Bowe, Roy Jones Jr , BHop and andre Ward to name a few
Being in top condition is always important in boxing. I don't know how important weight training is. Many great boxers did or do lift weights but many great boxers did or do no weight training. A boxer can be flabby but still have trained hard and have good stamina. James Toney still had good stamina when he was fat and flabby.
As I was reading your post, James Toney came in mind then you included his name!
But with that said, didn't you wish that he would have come into his fights in better condition? I'm sure he would have done even better in his career.

Clearly he trains to be explosive, so a lot of anaerobic drills and resistance training
His muscles are a byproduct of his training and err possible 'supplementation'
An in shape brown belt can beat an out of shape black belt. Being in shape only helps in sport, especially combat sports. I always scratch my head when I see flabby boxers or mma fighters.
Butter bean was king of the 4 rounders and he looked like a fighting Watermelon and at times he was knocking out buff black dudes

Duran never lifted weights and he knocked out many. But it’s skills not muscles that win fights all muscles do is intimidate other people . In the streets there’s a buff dude 90% Of individuals will say hell no im not fuking with that guy
My guess is that skill played some part.. but so did this...
