So there we have it, Pavlik reveals what many of the more astute boxing aficionados are already well aware of - Khan has been hovering around the P4P top spot for a long time, with one liability being a less than stellar punch resistance in some of his fights. And perhaps his main liability is that he was avoided so often. He tried to prove how good he was against the best many times but Mayweather kept avoiding the fight, as did the majority of prolific welterweights such as Pacquiao, Marquez, Bradley and Broner.
What do you think.. If Khan consistently showed above average punch resistance is he easily the P4P #1 today?
@2:00
Lol Pavliks off his nut still. Im sorry but Khan gets hit to much, its his defence not his chin. His chin isnt great but id says its ok.
Its more a defensive problem, especially hooks, hes way way to open for them and gets hit with big big shots. Even if he was given Carl Frochs chin he wouldnt be p4p 1#, as he would get hit with the huge shots and most likely gas and end up losing on points.
If Pavlik said, give Khan, Floyds defence, then you'd have someone who could contend for that 1# spot for sure.
No, because his boxing brain always has that moment where it tunes out, and that simple bit always leaves him in a scary spot. 4 camps in with working with Virgil Hunter, Amir Khan could only still barely stay on fight plan at 147lbs for about 8 rounds before things started to fall apart.
Amir Khan boxed a beautiful 3 rounds against Alvarez before his focus left and he fell back onto his bad habits; Alvarez took a bit of time, put Khan out of position in a trap, and left him for dead in the ring.
Amir Khan is arguably the best 4-round fighter to ever put on gloves; the main thing keeping him from being p4p anything is that championship fights are 12 rounds.
Once Khan falls into his pattern of marvelling at his own hand speed, he's there to be countered with hard shots for the rest of the fight, punch resistance or no punch resistance.
Just imagine how many sustained beatings Amir Khan would've already taken had he not had that hair-trigger chin, lol.
It's true that he does lose focus sometimes but most boxers do. Even Mayweather lost focus a number of times in both Maidana matches and ultimately didn't perform as well against an old shot-worn Maidana, as Khan did against a prime Maidana. So losing focus happens to even the perceived p4p #1, it doesn't really account for Khan's losses I think, apart from contributing towards the Canelo loss.
Canelo was likely on PEDs and was much heavier than Khan who was in his first fight 2 divisions up with no tune up against one of the best at the weight. Similar to, for example, Marquez going up 2 divisions from 135 to face Floyd with no tune up. Marquez was completely dominated, but most peeps had Khan winning the Canelo fight before he got caught by someone much heavier and who punches much harder than Floyd.
It's true in the Garcia fight Khan was finding it too easy that he got lulled into a false sense of security and thought his speed was just too much for Garcia to handle. Worst performance imo, he trained himself for that fight (Roach was in Philippines training Pac) and he kept throwing the exact same jab uppercut combo from round 1 again and again, making him extremely predictable. I'd say a lot of B+ fighters time and beat Khan on that particular night. Warning signs were seen in sparring footage recorded before the fight - Khan was throwing that exact same combo, getting timed and hit clean by an average sparring partner. But, he didn't have a trainer there to correct his mistakes so he practised it so much that he took that jab uppercut combo all the way into the fight, used it non-stop and Garcia figured out the predictable timing quickly. Khan was in a rage too because of the pre-fight racism so his boxing IQ went out the window, which is what Angel Garcia wanted to happen.
The best P4P fighter in the world wouldn't lose focus and get nailed with clean with straight right hands like Khan does.... it's not a chin issue, it's a focus issue. He's not as good as he thinks he is. His ring IQ is too low, and he judges distance badly.
If Pavlik didn’t get clowned by Martinez, and stayed off the bottle and drugs, he could have made a great comeback.
Now, he’d just get ****ed up bad. He mumbles when he speaks, so he’s had more that enough..
He was a good fighter..
Nah canelo was on PEDs and much heavier than khan, plus khan took that fight without even having a tune up at the weight.. that fight doesnt even count anymore because of canelo drug cheating..khan would have prolly beat him anyway if it was a clean fight, even with the huge weight disadvantage
Bull****. He has one of the lowest ring iq's out there. Dosen't vary his timing or rythym at all.
BINGO. Khan doesn't even circle correctly on a consistent basis. He crosses his feet and doesn't allow himself to always be set to punch. Technically he is flawed, THAT'S what leads to to his chin being exposed regularly.
Don’t agree with kelly. Khan’s athletic gifts and a bit of boxing iq is what got him far in his career. But he’s no master boxer, and is pretty much basic fundametally.
He doesn’t fight tall, doesn’t use his range wisely, doesn’t use his jab as effective as it could be, horrible footwork — it just look flashy. Doesn’t fight with discipline even though he knows right from the start that his chin is his problem — but he continues to deny it rather than adjust to it.
Everyone was amazed how the first few rounds against canelo happened but i wasn’t and im not even a fan of canelo. He didn’t do ish, and was unable to even establish effective feints or a quick jab to the body— which he could do with his speed— to slow/disrupt alvarez from coming and getting into rhythm.
I know he was the underdog, but with all his talks its hard to root for him.
I dont think highly of khan, great God given talents except for the chin, but he could’ve developed them more than he did if he was smarter like most of his fans claimed him to be.
Paulie didn't really need "power"; all his game needed was confidence enough in the structure of his hands to confidently sit down on the shots that he throws.
Paulie has spent his career proving that he had the feet, eyes, and boxing brain to be special. Put him in a spot where folks aren't simply walking through his shot, and his future changes, whether the KO numbers jump drastically or not.
malignaggi spent his career proving he was nowhere near elite(aka not special). he proved he could get big fight after big fight based on losing badly and beating nobodies or simply robbing them like against ngoudjo or cano. his resume really is vomit but he had the connections and they wanted him to be better than he actually was... cept he wasn't. and he proved that.
Never understood this. It's like when people say Paulie would've been elite if he had power. Well no, because then he might not have had to develop other parts of his game as much to get by.
Khan just isn't a great boxer, that's why he isn't a p4p fighter. He has good speed and not much else. You need more than that to get past really good fighters.
His chin didn't let him down v Canelo. That shot would've knocked out anyone except a few fighters with real granite chins. He lost because he hasn't got the IQ to carry out a game plan at that level and gets sloppy and gets caught.

he was knocked out twice in under 4 rounds. why are you saying these things?

Khan has one of the lowest ring IQ's? One of the stupidest posts ive ever seen on this site.
