write your local congress man. weigh in day before fight changes fight strategy thats all, if your fighter gets his @ss kicked dont blame the weigh in
I didnt blame the weigh in..................
But that is besides the point, a 24 hour + weigh in is ridiculous.
Pure stupidity. The old rules were much better. Still Hurd weighed 163 on fight night to Lara's 162 pounds on fight night so it was a fair fight. Hurd was just a little better. Hurd's tiny 1 pound weight advantage in the ring was meaningless.
He looked a lot larger than that!
I'm just saying!
I really find that hard to believe. Just by lookin at them especially with Hurd massive back alone, no way was he only one pound bigger than Lara on fight night.
that size advantage was meaningless? did you see how much bigger he was and how it affected the fight? how he walked right through shots, towered over lara and was too tall and strong to get clinched, how he hurt lara with a left hook without a ton on it?
what's more important than fight night weights are how they got there! lara could have campaigned at 147 early in his career, his managers used to talk about it. hurd is 26, almost 10 years younger than lara, and makes 154 lbs by the grace of god! he will not be at 154 lbs in his mid 30's like lara, trust me! he'll be lucky to still be a middleweight if he is boxing at all!
those fight night weights can be very decieving. that fight is a perfect example. they were "unofficially" 1 lb apart. did that look like a guy who had a 1 lb advantage in size, or a SMW fighting a 154 lber?
if lara wore boots or shoes, a jacket, and hurd wore sneakers and athletic wear on the scale they could be 5 lbs apart and still be "unofficially," only an lb apart.
and FFS just look at the two guys and tell me they're the same size with a straight face! lara is not a big 154 lber! he's been there for 5-10 years! hurd is absolutely f#cking enormous! he sheds a ton of weight in camp to get down to 154 lbs, and he will not do it forever!
Bro those fight night weights aren't real. It's Showtime/Haymon fooling the public.
I already exposed them more than one year ago here https://www.boxingscene.com/forums/showthread.php?t=731245
Still, Lara probably was around 170. Hurd maybe close to 175.
Regardless of the reasons for doing it (been answered on here anyway) the point is that the system is now being abused. Guys who should be a division or 2 higher are fighting at a division or 2 lower.
The best thing to do and it can easily be implemented by all organisations, is to bring in a clause which states that the no fighter should rehydrate to X number of pounds above the divisional limit.
I personally believe 5lb would be the perfect boundary, because if the original claim is that same day weigh ins were too dangerous due to dehydration, then 5lb of rehydration from the weigh in to fight time should be healthy enough. Imagine that, 5lb of what is supposed to be water being put on along with some healthy meals.
So, enforce a second weight in one hour before the fight, 5lb limit, check boxer's arms for needle marks to stop the use of saline and so on because one of the biggest issues currently isn't simply rehydrating, its the methods being used.
I fail to understand, along the lines of simple medical knowledge, how anyone can put on 10-15lb in the span of less than 24 hours, let alone half that, just from simple eating and drinking, and stay healthy enough to embark on a 12 round boxing match.

Indeed.
They also use it to sell any outstanding tickets and drive PPV interest on the biggest fights. It's one last bite of the media cherry before fight night and they'll be loath to give that up despite the obvious safety implications...
another very good point.
i'll even say that it does help to build a fight and it's fun for fans.
the answer is money.
they weigh in on friday to make a full weekend out of an event that takes place on saturday. people buy an extra room, eat dinner, and most importantly, go to the tables and lose.

Facts no one can tell me Hurd was only a pound heavier; he throws pitty pat shots as if he knows he 20-30 pounds heavier and they will eventually take their toll
bro he is enormous. oh my gosh is that guy a big 154 lber. one of the biggest i have ever seen. reminds me a bit of chavez jr at MW showing up as a CW.
Michael Spinks cancelled a LHW title defense against Eddie Gregory because Gregory (or maybe his name was Mustafa Muhammad at that point) was overweight and would shed the remaining lbs. That meant obvious losses for venue, television etc. Shortly thereafter the weigh-in procedure was changed.
That's how I recall it.
yea...not only that but the day before weigh in began being used as a promotional tool. I don't see it going back to same day.

Was it due to health reasons or did it give smaller guys some form of an advantage?
Because boxing is corrupt as hell, same day weigh in's WITH a hydration requirement would fix MANY of these bs weight issues....
Can't make weight AND keep hydrated, you should not be fighting in the division.

It was health reasons. The thinking was dehydrated fighters are more likely to suffer head trauma due to the reduction of fluids in the brain caviity. Trouble is larger fighters that
cut a lot if weight get a day to rehydrate and there can be huge difference in weight on fight night. The IBF only allows fighters to gain 10 pounds which seems like the best compromise.
Hurd came in under the ten-pound limit.

they didn't want guys missing weight on the big day of the fight. They need to bring it back. Same day weigh ins, 8 oz gloves in all weight classes, and only 10 weight classes. If you can't hang, then find another sport
Absolutely.
If this was to happen, we wouldn't see a lot of great match up.
Why would great match ups not happen?
And are we seeing a lot of great match ups anyway?
