A few points to consider:
Most people have overlooked RJJ because he only fought a few fights at JMW.
Most people consider JMW to be Tommy's peak weight. And on a H2H basis, I agree. JMW wasn't too big for him. Barkley beat him at MW and LHW.
I don't see Ray-Floyd as a pick'em. Floyd was a safety first WW with hand issues. Ray wouldn't have had any respect for Floyd's power. And he had equal ability but was also stronger and more powerful.
He was a better combination puncher also.
I can't see anybody from today's era breaking down Hearns.
Boxers haven't become better.
Leonard, Hearns, Duran, Benitez and McCallum, were better than today's WW's and JMW's.
I agree. .....
I could see Spence breaking down Hearns and I could see Thurman and Leonard having a chess match. Boxers have gotten better compared to the 80's
No they haven't got better. I'd say on average they have regressed.

Hearns was in his prime at that weight, but the weight was too big for him.
Mayweather has 11 fights at welter! He is NOT a top ten welter and Leonard and Hearns beat the hell out of him. He has NO power at 147!
When you go up against the welter greats like Robinson, Gavalin, Basilio, Griffith, Leonard, Hearns, Armstrong, Trinidad, Napoles, Walker, Ross, Burley, Lewis, Zivic, DeMarco..............etc....
You see fellows theres a lot of outstanding fighters that could come in at 147 through the history of boxing!
Floyd Mayweather has "11 Bouts" at welter. Against far past prime names, former lightweight contenders and alphabet champs.
He was the promoter and matchmaker on all his fights at welter!
He can't break an EGG! Floyud hasn't stopped any of his "cherrypicked" opponents in his last 10 years.
Good boxer at 130 and probably a top fifteen competitor at that weight.
At welter he gets blasted by the big boys! As I've said for years on this forum he has "No Power" at 147!
Ray
Hey Ray, why do you old timers hate Floyd so much?
And it's 12, not 11 and I didn't even count McGregor.
Cherry picking? COme on man. You're starting to sound like some of these casuals. Also he had a few knockouts in the last 10 years, what are you talking about? Hatton and Ortiz for starters.
Who was cherry picked? Floyd was calling Mosely out in 2005. Called out Hoya too and Tszyu. Everybody knows Arum blocked the Hoya fight.
Nobody was saying Mosely was shot when he stopped Margarito in brutal fashion which was his fight right before Floyd. Shane's bullshít loose toof story in 2006 after knocking out Vargas for the second time was backpedaling from Mayweather. See the video ^, that's from 2005 (Floyd) and 2006 (Mosely). That was 4-5 years before they fought.
I think he was calling Shane out as early as 1999. How the fùck did he cherrypick Mosely then?
Everybody said Floyd was scared of Margarito, so logically I ask --- why would he fight the guy that knocked this cat out stone cold if he was such a cherrypicker?
The only cherry picks were Berto and McGregor imo. Berto was his last fight and McRetard was years later. The rest were legitimate.
Floyd used Golden Boy for promotion and what's this about former lightweight contenders? You're pretty off base for a lot of your post content.
Floyd wasn't in control of his career until 2007 and here is a list of fighters he fought on his own. Everything before 2007, blame Arum and Bruce Trampler.
Conor McGregor
Andre Berto
Manny Pacquiao
Marcos Maidana
Saul Alvarez
Robert Guerrero
Miguel Cotto
Victor Ortiz
Shane Mosely
Juan Manuel Marquez
Ricky Hatton
Oscar De La Hoya
I think that's a pretty solid list. Cherry picking undefeated fighters in their prime (Hatton, Alvarez), come on man.
Maybe sweet pea at 147 could fair ok against hearns... but then I think about what he did to Benitez and duran, albeit an older, lesser version of Duran
Quite a stretch, since Floyd never faced anyone remotely similar to Hearns or Leonard. Not by a long, long ways. You've never faced anybody until you actually face them.
He hadn't faced any of the styles he came across in his professional career, until he faced them and came out on top every single time.
High IQ, taking the opponent's weapon away from them with his ATG #1 p4p defense, and finding openings with his blazing handspeed and accuracy. He did this over and over again.
Easier said than donemI broke down Mayweather's style to you...I am telling you what he DOES.
Yes, it is easier said than done, but he did it time and time again.

Comparing Pacman's piss poor effort against Mayweather is ridiculous, Pac would be brutally KO'd by either Leonard or Hearns.

Mayweather outboxes both of them at 147.
by doing what pray tell...
floyd probably doesn't set foot in the ww division while srl and hearns are prime...
only way he would even entertain it is if both were over the hill...

i give him an honest shot against hearns and duran, i think sugar would outpoint him...he did show some vulnerability to good counter guys with good footwork, and marvin wouldn't be too shy to go toe to toe with him and walk him down if he is being outboxed...
Good points.
It's a shame we never saw the fights.
Yeah, I'd have loved to have seen Mike at his peak vs a young version of Roy just coming through.
I also believe he could have beaten any of the 'Fab Four'
From what I've read, Manny Steward steered Hearns away from him.
I know they sparred many rounds together at the Kronk.

He is. Even prime Roy Jones and James Toney had problems with a faded version of McCallum.

Mike was great.
I think that he's very underrated these days.
