Frank Warren in his latest interview on IFL TV has confirmed he has reached out to Anthony Joshua to potentially sign AJ as his contract with Matchroom and Eddie Hearn comes to an end this summer. Warren also confirmed that other promoters such as Bob Arum and Dana White are also in talks with AJ.
Warren says its very possible AJ could end up leaving Eddie Hearn to promote himself or join another promotional team as BIG money is being offered to sign AJ.. Thoughts?
There'll be some kind of AJ/Matchroom partnership. If Hearn thought he was losing Joshua he'd be pushing to cash out with Wilder or Fury, not pissing around with Parker and Miller.
Yep agree completely, your last sentence says it all.
There'll be some kind of AJ/Matchroom partnership. If Hearn thought he was losing Joshua he'd be pushing to cash out with Wilder or Fury, not pissing around with Parker and Miller.
Why would Sky NOT want Joshua fights with his massive numbers just cuz he's not with Hearn?
Doesn't matter what they want. Matchroom has the exclusive until 2021.
I'm not saying Joshua will or won't do anything fwiw. Although I do think he should do a fight by fight relationship with anyone just like Floyd did to insure he maximizes his income. This is a brutal game.
But what I am saying is that IF Joshua leaves Hearn Sky isn't stupid enough to not wanna continue having Joshua's PPV's cuz that sh^t is gonna make them a nice stack of money & will tell Hearn as such if he's butthurt about losing Joshua.
Floyd didn't do a fight by fight deal though. He had HBO until the last 7 fights of his career where he finished it with Showtime.Joshua has Sky only,BT/Boxnation do not know how to do PPV's,Promotion is bad and more households are 10 Times more likely to have Sky TV in the house.ITV are also garbage,No reason to deal like that given Sky is the only viable platform.Hearn is also very good at promoting fights on Social Media with his mouth and in this current era of Technology, and 2018 Promoting,he does a good job.
If Hearn loses Joshua doesn't that disprove Sky's theory of what Hearn is capable of?
And if Joshua isn't with Hearn isn't Joshua the new Mayweather vs whoever situation for Sky when he fights? He's doing massive PPV numbers there from the sounds of it. Why would Sky NOT want Joshua fights with his massive numbers just cuz he's not with Hearn?
I don't buy that they would suddenly be disinterested in Joshua whoever he was with. And if they do then he can just ride out any specific deal he has with Sky & go to some other UK entity or f#ck it go to America & try to become the next Lennox Lewis as UK guy who did some big US PPV's. He's got worldwide star potentially. I say Sky wants to do business with him w/e the situation is.
Fighters will look at that and then more decide will to go this way, which Sky and Hearn wont want.Trust me,Sky will be telling Hearn not to mess up relations with Joshua and to keep him onboard. Why change a Winning Formula ? Joshua is not going to be a Lennox Lewis.Lewis had Tyson,Holyfield to play wiith in America.AJ has Wilder that is it.Most of AJ's Big Fights are UK Based and to get the most money out of these he needs PPV.Sky are the only Secure Boxing PPV Provider in the UK.Joshua diverting will be a Risk which has no Postives to it.Sky have backed Joshua since Day 1,wouldnt they feel as if they have been betrayed if Anthony decides to divert
Okay so Sky is the only legit PPV player. There is no HBO PPV & Showtime PPV sorta rivalry at any level?
Yea but what I'm saying is Sky gets paid & I assume Hearn gets paid something too so why wouldn't they STILL want to show Joshua PPV fights regardless if Hearn was Joshua's promoter?
I question that Hearn wouldn't still allow Joshua PPV's on Sky & I'm sure Sky would pressure Hearn themselves to sign off on it.
Randomly, question for anyone, what is this situation with Sky & Hearn any damn way? I don't get why Sky would give so much PPV-power to yay or nay the whole country's boxing PPV's. Couldn't they have favored Hearn since he's one of the best promoters w/o giving him veto rights on boxing PPV's? What am I not getting with that arrangement?
Your Last Paragraph, everything on Sky Boxing is run through Hearn.Their have been exceptions which is Mayweather v Pacman and Mayweather v Mcgregor but every other boxing show outputted on Sky has to have Eddie Hearn involvement. The reason why Sky give all the power to Hearn is so they believe they can get a monopoly of the best fighters through this way and to be fair they have. Also UK is Small/tiny compared to America so you dont need to have 3/4 Promoters with Tv dates.Sky and Matchroom have a relationship which extends to other Sports so they are close and them falling out over Joshua is unlikely.Given Matchroom provides Snooker,Darts as well as Boxing to Sky Sports. To show how close they are,Matchroom paid the TV Rights for Ward/Kovalev 2 to be on Sky.Do you see Top Rank and Bob Arum paying for fights to be on HBO ?
Okay so Sky is the only legit PPV player. There is no HBO PPV & Showtime PPV sorta rivalry at any level
Their is a Boxing Rivalry which has grown over their last 18 Months. However i would say it is more of a Sports Rivalry. That is Sky Sports and BT Sport.Sky are Hearn/Matchroom and BT are Frank Warren/Boxnation.For Example,Tyson Fury is very likely to sign with Warren and BT,and Joshua is with Sky.That fight becomes impossible to make because Sky and BT have been in battle over Sports rights, much higher money than what Showtime and HBO do.BT Forced Sky to pay 4 BILLION to keep the Football(Preimer League) which is why they are relevent in the UK,Boxing and Football are heavily linked. Most Boxing Fans come from Football in the Uk.So that is the SHO/HBO equivalent.
Tyson Fury
If Joshua beats Parker, there's really just 4 Huge Money Making Fights for him that could net him £100 Million...if he wins them of cause which i don't think he will.
That is:
David Haye in Septemebr 2018
Tyson Fury in April 2019
Deontay Wilder in September 2019
Daniel Dubois in April 2020
Possibly Two of those fights will involve Warren.
Wilder and Haye don't have any connections to Hearn either.
So basically Hearn is just a spare wheel at this stage of Joshua's career and just taking a 25% for not much in return.
Joshua needs to just self promote himself and take each fight as it comes.
Isn't Hearn able to sign off of any fight doe?
You can get your PPV on Sky Box Office by cutting Hearn in on the profits.
Why wouldn't he sign off on a Joshua fight or why wouldn't Sky pressure him to even if he was butthurt about Joshua leaving him?
Because if AJ leaves and is still allowed to fight on Sky Box Office, Hearn and Sky both lose their stranglehold. Hearn & Sky have a mutually beneficial relationship. Most of the top fighters sign with Hearn to get on Sky. Resulting in Hearn having the best stable, and therefore, Sky having the rights to the best stable.
It's an arrangement that's worked great. Why would they want to risk having it fall apart? They just spent all this time teaching fighters that you better sign with Hearn. Why undo all of that progress?
Why do you call Hearn a racist???
Have to word this carefully and can't reveal everything.
His father is a notorious racist...allegedly.
Jodie Marsh revealing Eddie's Bullying and Racism that was covered up and she was silenced by News UK.
The whole fall out from Ricky Burns and his manager Alex Morrison and their racism yet was continued to be promoted by Matchroom Sports.
The way he talks about Joshua as being like a Child or a Baby when Joshua is a 28 Year Old Man!
Go to 24:40 of this interview and this is one of the many times Hearn has publicaly demeaned Joshua.
Other far more shocking things that will come out soon hopefully if they don't get covered up by pay off's.
Isn't Hearn able to sign off of any fight doe?
Why wouldn't he sign off on a Joshua fight or why wouldn't Sky pressure him to even if he was butthurt about Joshua leaving him?
I assume Hearn is getting some sorta upside with any PPV since Sky gave him the status they give him & Joshua is gonna make someone PPV money if he fights on Sky or nah.
And idk the UK PPV landscape, but it does seem like there are other players, ITV(?) at a minimum, that could become a bigger player if it got Joshua's PPV action it seems like to me. But maybe there is an angle I'm missing there not on top of with the PPV industry in the UK.
Sky Sports run Boxing in the UK.ITV Covered Eubank v Groves on PPV on Saturday and they are amateurs. They can't promote and cannot get get the actual fight to our Tv Screens, have you seen the amount of refunds ITV are having to hand out ? Joshua needs Sky,just as much they need him. They make him all that TV Money through that cross promoting and getting Football Fans to tune into His fights.Eddie Hearn was a nobody until he got the exclusive backing from Sky in 2013,it helped that his Dad had a cosy relationship with Sky aswell.
It's well known that frank Warren and Eddie Hearn have a rivalry. Frank Warren is frank(ly) jealous of what Eddie has managed to achieve. He often says things like "anyone could promote Joshua" etc. now that may have become true now but you have to give Eddie Hearn credit for getting him where he is, and Joshua isn't the only fighter. I mean who would have fought Tony bellew and David hate would have been a big fight 3 years ago? Probably no one could have said that was a ppv?
I think Joshua has been guided well but promoted well also by both Eddie and sky, and he would be foolish to change something that isn't broken in my opinion.
Why can't Warren talk about it? He's half of the talks & Joshua's contract with Hearn is coming to an end. Joshua is exploring promoters, Warren is exploring fighters. I don't see why it'd need to be secret.
Maybe Joshua don't want it to come out that he's talking to others. You also notice none of the other promoters came out and said anything. (Not that I'm aware of)
He can certainly talk about but it would be a little professional courtesy if he kept it out of the media. Unless he spoke to Joshua and he didn't have a problem if he said anything.
Why shady? Joshua should definitely explore options even if he was 100% sure he wanted to stick with Hearn right now. Always +EV to see whats out there.
I agree it's good for Joshua to explore his options but he should be the one to put it out there. Not Warren. Especially, since he is obligated to Hearn at the moment.
Not possible, Hearn has exclusive rights to promote boxing on Sky. Warren has BT sport.. that's a giant platform in itself but I'm not sure if BT sport have a PPV service.
i'm sure they'd bend the rules for AJ.
