Last September we all witnessed Canelo drastically change his fighting style by fighting off his back foot. It caught everyone off guard including GGG. In the early rounds Canelo looked to be controlling the match with his amazing hand speed and combinations he was letting off in the center of the ring. He kept beating GGG to the punch and he gained confidence as he made the Kazakhstan fighter look slow. It wasn't till Canelo got caught by a right hook when his confidence got the best of him and he taunted Golovkin by purposely putting himself against the ropes, it was then that the match turned as Canelo got on his bicycle. He did not want to be caught again. (who would) Canelo did roll with the punches very well and minimized the effect the hits had. I believe Canelo did a decent job at boxing while going backwards however that is what ruined his image, talking all that smack before the match and he was the one getting backed up as Golovkin applied the pressure.
In my opinion all the trash talk Canelo did before the match was all tactics to hype Golovkin up thinking they were gonna have themselves a slugfest just to pull a fast one on him and use a boxing style no one expected to see. It completely caught Golovkin off guard and it showed. It took a couple of rounds but Golovkin made the adjustment he needed or else we would of seen him trying load up all night and keep missing like he did in the early rounds looking like a slow old man. After the adjustment Gennady established his jab, applied pressure and controlled the pace at times trapping Canelo in the corners. Canelo had no answer for this adjustment it only caused him to move around the ring even more letting off combination to fight off Golovkin when he trapped him in the corners. If Canelo would of kept Gennady in the middle of the ring throughout the fight things would of been much different that's where Canelo had the most success because he does have faster hands and better upper body movement but lacks the stamina to stay consistent. Both fighters showcased their talent no doubt Canelo with his incredible hand speed to counter Golovkin and Golovkin showing his amazing iron chin and relentless pressure. It was a incredible match, can't wait to see it again. As far as the rematch goes there are a variety of things that will change from both corners changes I believe will give us a real treat.
May of last year I certainly gave Golovkin the edge for good reason. I did not see a way Canelo could win, in none of his previous bouts did he show the ability to move his feet. Before last September Canelo consistently planted his feet when he lets off his blazing fast combinations, for that reason I saw him losing the match. We now know Golovkin can walk through Canelo's biggest hits and keep coming forward so in short Canelo did not show how he could land his attacks then use his feet to get him away from danger but boy did he prove me wrong when they finally faced off. With that said I believe Canelo will come in to the rematch using the same boxing style but this time around it will be far more refined he has shown fight after fight that he can drastically improve his skill and now that he knows his opponent and has had 12 rounds to study him Canelo will be far more dangerous and elusive.
(Side note to everyone saying Canelo looked like Mayweather this past September, please stop he is nowhere near that level. At least not yet)
The Question now is how will the kazakhstan fighter treat this next match, will he once again come in and try to have a "Mexican Style" match with an opponent that has already made him look slow when he loads up and misses? I doubt Golovkin is that naive.
Let's rewind back to October 2015 Gennady made his PPV debut against IBF Middleweight Champion David Lemeuix. Very little people know that Lemeuix is in fact a harder puncher than Gennady. Gennady knew this going into the fight so how does he handle it, instead of using his usual brawling style with a bigger puncher than himself he instead chose to box him and destroyed Lemeuix. Lots of boxing fans however criticized Golovkin because he was not able to box in a similar fashion with Brooks or with Jacobs and didn't show that same dominance as he did with Lemeuix. All of this is indeed Golovkin fault but not for the reasons you would think. It was all done for the "Big Drama Show" as Golovkin likes to say. Both Brooks and Jacobs had great exchanges with Golovkin. We all saw Gennady take some huge shots as he returned his own, He would walk through hell to be able to land his shots, we even saw Gennady do this with Canelo. So why does GGG take the abuse? it's very simple he did not respect their power. Now back to Lemeuix, in case you guys did not pay attention go back and look at that match, not once did Golovkin put himself in a bad position, not once did he try to come in on Lemeuix without having the advantage first. Golovkin did not take unnecessary abuse. He dictated the match with his jab and only used power shots at appropriate times witch ultimately led to a one sided match naming Golovkin the victor by TKO. Lemeuix is the only Boxer I've seen that Gennady was not willing to exchange with or leave himself vulnerable to that in itself should be a testament to Lemeuix's power. What I want you to take from this is how Gennady used his boxing skills to destroy I bigger puncher than himself. The boxing IQ Gennady possess is amazing this is why once again I give him the edge in the rematch. However this will be no easy fight against the great red headed Canelo. Golovkin needs to come in disciplined ready to have a boxing match not a slug fest, he has outstanding boxing abilities witch he has shown in many boxing matches, this will ultimately be the deciding factor. Now if GGG comes in to face Canelo as disciplined as he was with Lemeuix how will Canelo handle it? We know that if necessary Golovkin can make adjustments we saw this in their first match Canelo however not so much.
My prediction when Canelo and Gennady meet again we will be seeing a tactical boxing match from the start there will be no fireworks early no risks from either side. This favors Golovkin who is far more composed and disciplined. When Canelo faced off with Mayweather, Canelo noticeably became frustrated not being able to catch Mayweather and began making mistakes. It's questionable if Canelo has improved this since no other opponent has pushed him to that level a level he will indeed be pushed to come May. So what happens if Canelo gets frustrated and begins to make mistakes, he will be met by Golovkin's power. Depending on how well Canelo takes this will be the turning point of the match. I see it going one of two ways Canelo holds up clinches and gets on his bicycle when he recovers resulting in a decision win majority decision for Golovkin. The other way is what I wish will happen and that is when Canelo is met with Golovkin's power he will get knockedown not out more of a flash knockdown this will cause Canelo to throw caution to the wind and this gentleman will give us the fight we want with possible knockdowns from both sides and both fighters having a equal chance at the win.
I wrote this with no prejudice against any fighter but as a fan of boxing that admires the skill both of these fighters. If you don't agree with my prediction that's perfectly fine we can debate on to why you think it will play out the way you say. We are all fans of the sport no need for rude comments everyone is welcomed to voice their opinion. So let's hear them.
He already won a boxing match against Canelo. I don't see why he wouldn't do it again. All these 'Canelo Wins" predictions are based on Canelo improving and Golovkin remaining static. Golovkin left his body attack at home and still won the fight. I'm sure he will bring it and more early round pressure this time. I don't think this fight is going to boil down to Canelo being just a bit busier. He has to stay off the ropes and improve his stamina. If he does these things then yeah he has a good chance as long as Golovkin doesn't go to the body. I think it's going to be a real war. Personally I feel Canelo can't out box Golovkin. He can outspeed him but he can't out think him. I'm picking G to stop Canelo in the seventh round starting with a body attack and then head shots. I predicted that for the first fight so take it with a grain of salt. LOL..
Canelo winning and Canelo getting the win are 2 different things. He just about got the win last time when he lost. Lots of those rounds were marginal...if Canelo is busier, his flashier stuff will get those rounds. Ggg isn't getting any younger either...rematches like this almost always favor the younger fighter.
Canelo is just coming into his prime, and he defends and moves well enough to pick his battles against Golovkin, who hasn't looked good (to me) since before the Monroe fight. Even when he finds himself against the ropes or in the corner, Canelo can get out hot water quickly against Golovkin if he needs to. Golovkin was unable to stay on him in the first fight, and the added months aren't going to improve the situation.
Also, the cards. Canelo/Goldenboy will always have that one judge who vastly prefers cute moves to effective aggression.
Canelo will win by UD, almost absolutely. In a close, fairly lame fight.
Ggg has definitely slowed down, and age is surely the culprit...unless he was on peds before. I also see it being a similar fight to the first, but I favor Canelo. All he needs to do is move his hands a bit more and he wins by decision. Of the adjustments both guys need to make, I feel like Canelo being a bit more busy is more likely than ggg applying even more pressure. His feet and hands are unlikely to suddenly be quicker. The speed deficit is too much for ggg to win a boxing match and canelo's defense is good enough to avoid getting caught with anything big imo...but I have been proven wrong before.

think its gonna look very similar to the first fight, cant really see either fighter being able to make too many adjustments. Dont know whether its age or not but GGG looks so much slower than he did a few years ago, that could just be cause hes loading up too much. I dont think hes gonna be able to get canelo out of there so i think he should go in there with the intention of winning rounds rather than landing that big shot.

I completely disagree with you. Yes Canelo has a chance of winning if he stays consistent boxing Gennady in the middle of the ring. However he will need to have the stamina to go 7 rounds at least were it's not just a short burst but the entire round in order to clearly win the match. Stamina is not something you obtain in 9 months, yes you can get good conditioning in 9 months but not stamina. The only way I see Canelo Winning is if he paces himself round by round in order to not gas himself out but you have to remember that it will be GGG that he is in the ring with so how can you pace yourself against someone that puts you under extreme pressure? If Canelo can figure that out then he has a good chance at winning.
I agree with a lot of your analysis. Good post.
Canelo needs to improve on his stamina. It's something he has had issues with for a long time. In the Mayweather fight, he was once so exhausted he froze on the ropes, with Floyd touching him up and down with soft jabs. In that moment, Canelo was a sitting duck. So, yeah, his stamina isn't up to bar. Must be something they are working hard on at the gym. Canelo will also need to bring his slickest game possible to constantly move out of the way of GGG's bombs. That consumes a lot of energy too.
Now, I was never sold on GGG as this great fighter, and still am not. As soon as he upped his comp, people started asking questions and the decisions he got are still being disputed on these boxing forums. GGG was a good fighter who was disproportionally hyped. The hype was nauseating.
I always saw Golovkin as this nice guy who depended on brute strength, with very few skills, special effects, or attitude. He's robotic and stiff. He was not able to adjust or cut off the ring properly against Canelo (supposedly one of his strengths). GGG won't find many Wades moving forward.
Canelo was basically a JMW fighting a seasoned MW. The size difference was pretty clear to see to objective observers. (Won't get into the weight debate.) He did the best he could under that disadvantage. Now he knows what he has to do to improve on his last performance. GGG's mystique is gone. He looked average in his last 3 fights. I don't think Canelo will respect him much in the rematch, and Canelo is the better, more skilled boxer. That's why I give him the edge.
The first fight was okay, nothing great. I expect this one to be similar, with a little more action (more punches landed by Canelo). I don't know how much Golovkin can change, with his age and inactivity.
War Canelo!:boxing:
canelo prefers to fight off the back foot as he is strictly a counter puncher. ggg is actually the perefect style for him but ggg is just reall good at his style. canelo sucks when he has to come forward like against floyd. he doenst know what to do and is too slow

I expect another dud, with Canelo winning a bit more clearly this time.

I can't really disagree with anything you wrote except your assessment of Brook/Jacobs as "Big Drama Show." I think he was a little surprised by Brook's aggressiveness in the beginning but he knew he wasn't in any danger so he didn't panic. He was eventually able to get the stoppage. On the other hand, he was very cautious of Jacobs because he also knew he had a big punch. Jacobs landed an overhand right in the first round that changed the entire fight. Once he felt Jacobs' power he tried to fight him like he did Lemieux. The problem with that was Jacobs was a much better fighter than Lemieux and didn't make as many mistakes and Golovkin put himself in a few bad positions where Jacobs caught him. Especially in the late rounds. It was easy to outbox Lemieux but he was slow and predictable. Jacobs was quick and used angles to land punches Golovkin didn't see coming. Like you, I think he can do the same thing against Canelo he did in the first fight.
In order for me to give you a proper response I will have to re watch both matches. No doubt Jacobs is a far better boxer than Lemeuix what I was trying to implement was how disciplined Gennady can be in a match when he needs to be.
More paragraphs bro. Holy f#ck at that wall of text.
But yea I agree with this largely so if you said this, just in wayyyyyyyyyyyy more words, I'm right there with you.
Probably another 12 round decision. And probably both guys don't alter their previous strategy THAT much. Some changes could happen, hell some changes will happen, but I'm not entirely sold they'll be large enough to drastically change the previous outcome where a KO was never close to happening for either guy. GGG starting quicker & attacking the body more would help him. Canelo fighting 3 minutes of a round would help him.
Yeah lol sorry about that, tried to adjust it a bit I'm not really the writing type but boxing is my passion so I gave it a go.
Very well thought out and I agree with pretty everything you said but it would be much easier to read if you broke it up into more paragraphs
Thank you for the feed back, broke it down a bit more.

Golovkin going to find it easier to just build pressure such as was the case in the first fight. Canelo just lacks the depth, intelligence and power to really carry himself against GGG.
I agree, the pressure Gennady applies once he knows he's hurt you is unmatched. I just want to give both fighters a fair shake to avoid all the criticism from Canelo fans.
Appreciate you taking the time to write this analysis of the fight. Gets me hyped for the rematch. I agree with most of what you said, but, if GGG puts Canelo down, he will finish him. However, I want both fighters to get knocked down, so we see a war (as you mentioned).
