Cooper knocking down Ali... Unifications from Lennox...
Newer lot might say Joshua vs Wlad at wembley..
Anything hatton related .. and a bunch on here will say Calzaghe beating Lacy, and a past prime Roy and Hopkins..
Although i did enjoy joes win over bernard, cos hopkins was, is and always will be a c..u..n..tt
says a lot that this is probably it :lol1:
our 'enry
Calzaghe over lacy obviously. Anytime an American fights over there it's all they talk about
You know that how?
I was at Calzaghe's fights with Lacy, Kessler and Hatton-Tszyu and though it felt like a big fight/night Calzaghe-Kessler and Hatton-Tszyu felt so much bigger.
For me it was actually when Bruno beat McCall for the WBC belt. Not saying Bruno was the best HW the UK ever produced OR it was an amazing fight but...for sheer occasion and tension. Bruno proved all his doubters wrong and deserved his moment of glory.
2fast ending wlad's 10 year reign which basically ruined hw boxing for americans because they got tired of losing and pretended to like lightweights again
British boxing really peaked before the color television era. Broughton, Lewis (not lennox), Fitzsimmons are usually ranked as their top 3
Do you believe McGuigan should be in the Hall of Fame??? I don't think he should be .
Sentiment says yes, he was such a likable figure and a real good news story at the time, but trying to be objective probably not.
Although when you think how carefully boxers are managed now, the way he lost his title did make you wonder if he had a lot more to give.
Nigel Benn v Gerald Mcclean in London was one of the most saddest, violent boxing matches i have and will ever see in my life.It was War,like 1776 and 1812 .Lennox Lewis obviously becoming Undisputed, then you had Naseem Hamed, then you had Hatton, then you had Khan/Froch/Haye now it's all about Joshua. That's how it's been from the Mid 90's.
Turpin beating Sugar Ray Robinson definitely no.1
Fitzsimmons knocking out Corbett for the HW title coming from MW/LHW.
Jack Burg beating prime LW Tony Canzoneri
Ted Kid Lewis beating Jack Britton a gazzilion times
Off top of head
My dad talks about Henry Cooper vs Cassius Clay, he was out drinking and as he went to the toilet Clay was on the canvas looking down and out, by the time he came out the fight was over and Cooper was stopped on cuts! Cooper was a very British kind of hero. Never the greatest but courageous, humble and well liked.
McGuigan v Pedroza was a big deal in the 80s but he was badly mismanaged and didn't really stay around long enough. Benn Eubank Watson were great fighters but that was very much a British thing, Irish too with Steve Collins.
Objectively Calzaghe in the modern era, Turpin in the 50s due to his illustrious opponent and Bob Fitzimmons being the first 3 division champ back in the 1900s.

Hard to say from the days of Ted "Kid" Lewis, Jackie Berg, Jimmy Wilde and fighters in that time. Turpin on paper probably has to be considered. That was Robinson's 2nd loss in well over 100 fights.
Modern era I'd say Ken Buchanan's win over Ismael Laguna was huge. Laguna was from Panama so obviously more comfortable in the Puerto Rican heat but Buchanan boxed a great fight and won. Had it not been for Duran, Buchanan would have had a lengthy reign.
Barry McGuigan beating Eusebio Pedroza was huge and then you've got the political aspect of that match. Pedroza had been champ over 7 years and 19 defenses.
Hatton's win over Tszyu, Calzaghe's wins over Lacy and Kessler in unification's also big especially at the time.

My personal favourite was when Hatton beat Tzsyu in Manchester. Amazing atmosphere and a career best performance from Hatton. It was after 2am when the fight started too, which added to the excitement.
Can remember as a kid how big the Eubank/Benn rivalry was. Both regularly drew over 10million viewers. Remember how serious **** would get between supporters of each.
