What are some modern / recent examples of other boxing bouts other than the Lomachenko vs Rigondeaux bout as examples of a boxer who has had a significant size / weight advantage over their opponents but beat them with mainly / mostly boxing skills and whilst depending very little on size? Like how Lomachenko beat Rigondeaux using mostly skills and relying very little to nothing on size.
A few recent examples that I can think of are:
1) Oleksandr Usyk vs Thabisio Mchunu
2) Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Juan Manuel Marquez (although Mayweather did possess a longer reach and boxed from the outside with it).
Hopkins vs Oscar.
Hopkins vs Trinidad.
As someone already said, size still comes into it, but in the above examples Hopkins disected both guys with skills more than anything else. But there is no doubt that his size allowed him to implement those skills more effectively.
As far as boxing skills go, and if Rigo fought the same fight - then yes, that's true.
I guess if Rigo had been bigger than Loma he might have tried to slow him down by mauling and leaning on him, but that's something we'll never know.If Rigo was bigger, I dont see he changing his style at all. So many fighters over countless decades have said they would change their style or do something totally different and end up doing exactly the same thing. Leonard / Duran 1 would be one of those exceptions to the rule where Leonard was aggravated by Duran and then went in slugging it out with him as well as Barrera when he became more of a boxer, it was the result of him getting stopped by Junior Jones....but most would do what has gotten them to the top of Boxing.
Floyd-Marquez
Marquez is my favorite fighter of the past 20 years but i dont buy it when people say Floyd with a massive size advantage..
Floyd doesnt even get down like that. He isnt the kind of fighter who imposes his strength on anybody.
He was simply the much faster guy and the superior boxer. Size didnt have sht to do with it.
Every Valuev fight... he could've grabbed them by their necks with one hand and pounded them into the canvas with the other, but he chose to use his silky smooth boxing skills to earn the victory.
margo had already started his decline coming off the mosely beating manny got leftovers prime margo as the one who fought paul williams even though he lost he was a machine they use to call santa cruz little margarito over 1000 punches in his fights thrown by the time manny fought him he wasnt half the fighter that raped kermit cintron twice
I have a perfect scenario to exemplify what you said about size. So we know that Rigo who was supposed to be the faster fighter threw punches, Lom slipped them. Size provides absolutely no advantage when it comes to speed, reflexes, and defense and in fact most bigger fighters would be slower in those categories. Now, if we made Rigo the bigger fighter and Lom the smaller fighter, what happens? That is easy. All the punches that Rigo threw that he missed Lom with, would miss even worse than they did because Rigo's speed and reflexes and defense would be slowed by being the bigger fighter. Now we make Lom the smaller one and what happens? All those combinations Lom threw would be even more voluminous and faster and more accurate. Based on their styles, power was not the game for them, like you mentioned, nor was it a fight where one fighter was leaning on the other with the guy's back to the ropes which is where size comes into play where the smaller fighter is being leaned on and that affects the lower back and generally wears out a fighter. Lom had an easy time landing and Rigo had a harder time. That would be even more magnified and Lom would have been more of a blur and Rigo slower if their sizes was reversed. It would have been more of a mismatch.

It's true that a size advantage always matters to some extent. That's why it's called a size advantage.
But it matters more in some match-ups than others, and in Loma/Rigo the size difference mattered less than in any other fight I've seen where one guy was bigger than the other.
Loma was taller than Rigo, but with a shorter reach. I've seen Rigo handle taller, longer opponents than Loma without any problems at all.
The extra power and punch resistance of the bigger man compared to the smaller didn't really come into it, because Loma wasn't throwing hard power punches, and Rigo couldn't land his!
It's true that Loma used his weight in the clinches and to push Rigo's head down when he was crouching in front of him. But Rigo was only clinching and crouching low because he was being outboxed and beaten by Loma's superior speed and movement.
The speed and mobility advantage should have been with the smaller man, not the bigger.
Imo, Loma being younger and more active than 37 year Rigo was much more significant than his size advantage.I have a perfect scenario to exemplify what you said about size. I don't subscribe to this BS.
I mean, I just don't see how you can completely throw the size advantage out of the window and attribute it to just "boxing." Their bodies are more imposing, their punches are always going to be harder, and the smaller guy's punches and attacks won't ever have the same impact as a guy their own size. There's no way around it.
I like how you added that discrepancy with Floyd over Marquez but refused to apply it to Usyk against Mchunu!
I saw Loma several times in that fight used his size to discourage Rigo, like pushing down on his neck with an elbow and putting his weight on it!
Of course, things like that get left out cuz who cares as long as the Euro wins!

Pretty much.
With Marquez and Floyd its important to point out not only was FM much bigger but Marquez was completely out of shape, it looked like he just came out of 3 week binge from Taco Bell
Hardly the same Marquez who fought Pacquiao the 3rd and 4th time

Great post. Agreed. Watching live, I felt bad for Marquez fighting Floyd. It was a mismatch.

Except like manny pacquiao .... the dude was special. People can talk about Margachito all they want..... and yes, margo did very well rob Cotto of his whole carreer... but margachito was a ****in monster at 147 .... then to see lil manny pacquiao beat the brakes off the guy was some thing phenominal. Margo should have had every advantage in that fight lol
