If you could handle Fury's Comeback in 2018, what kind of path would you take that would be the best for him short term and long term? He'll have been out of the ring for over 2 years plus coming down from 350lbs.
Here's a few options:
1. Go straight for the Big Money and into a Big Fight in his first fight back against one of the champions Wilder, Joshua or Parker.
2. Fight a Top 10 Guy as his first Comeback Fight.
3. Fight a warm up against a Journeyman and then a Big Fight.
4. Go the George Foreman 1990's route and Fight only Journey men in 2018.
5. Stay away from All Champions and Contenders in 2018 and just get his fitness and sharpness back with easy fights.
What kind of Path do you think is best for him?
If he's not long for the sport, you get him a tune-up (basically to experience getting the weight down) and then go for the cash out.
If he's got some time in the sport left, you spend the full 2018 getting Fury back to sharpness (an 8 rounder, a 10 rounder, and then a 12, quality of the opponent doesn't matter), and then head for the big fights in 2019.
Agree with this the most.
If he's just come back to cash out then one comeback and then fight Joshua in September which he'll probably lose as its too short a time to get his sharpness back but at least he can retire again and walk away with around £8-10 Million.
If he wants to create any type of Legacy in the Heavyweight division and he's commited to fight another 5 years then he should come back slowly in 2018 and not even think about any one in the Top 10 as he'll need a full year to get himself back to being fully fit and sharp again.
Then in 2019, he can look at fighting an eliminator against a Top 10 guy and then fight one of the Champions in the Summer or Autumn 2019, by which time he'll have got back to where he was at the time of the Klitschko fight.
He's going to have a hard time. He really trashed his body. Listen to his fking voice. The dude is going to be fuked.
He needs a tailor-made fight coming back. Someone with a name, but no real speed or ability to rush in with power. Get him confident, get the public confident in him again, then take it accordingly. In no way should he be taking a stiff fight after the type of layoff he's had. He's not a Mikey garcia or Andre Ward that's stayed healthy and kept in the gym.
Fury first of all needs discipline with first his diet, and training. If that doesn't go well he should be advised to retire.
If he does take training seriously and wants to come back, I would take two fights against journymen and see how it goes. The soonest he should take a top contender like Joshua, Wilder, Parker, Ortiz, or Povetkin should be the end of 2018, imo.
I think he could compete with a Povetkin or Parker straight away, but the other guys, not so sure.
HOnestly-
I'd have him fight a light tune up. Not a complete tomato can but a guys that would show us if tyson has anything left.
I would base my strategy off how he performs in his tun up
Depends on what you think Fury's future is.
Money-wise it would be the best to fight Joshua straight away, as soon as possible. There would be a lot of intrigue as to how he looks before the fight and if he loses he has the excuse already so unless Joshua destroys him it warrants a rematch down the road. And if he wins after everything that has happened that's ATG-level stuff.
If Fury takes a journeyman and looks like crap the Joshua fight would lose some of the intrigue. Considering Fury's style I doubt he would look impressive even against lesser fighters. Fury tends to fight to the level of his competition, he looked bad against mediocre opponents in the past. He doesn't have the style to look great unless he's in with legit competition.
The likes of Parker are the worst opponents for him, hungry motivated guys with skills who can beat him and ruin him the Joshua or Wilder payday.
My advise to him would be just take the biggest fight possible and build from there.
