We're talking the resume of the great Joe Calzaghe. He retired Undefeated with wins over two living Legends. He didn't need to fight soft touches or complete novices. That is very rare isn't it? Let's ignore "past-prime" cries from moronic haters. Joe beat two of the supposed best of his generation before riding off into the sunset.
Could you imagine Calzaghe fighting Hopkins or Roy Jones in their prime? Why didn't he fight Hopkins in the early 2000's???
Hopkins was negotiating with Showtime and was set to agree a three fight deal which included a bout with his mandatory (I think Carl Daniels), I believe a fight with Harry Simon and then a third fight with Calzaghe for $6m (I think) and he opted to turn it down.
Hopkins was very difficult around that time. Not budging on 50-50 with Roy Jones and then agreeing to fight James Toney at 190 and then just after Ring Magazine's with them on the cover went on sale he pulled out. It took him 3 years (Oscar fight) to actually capitalize on the Trinidad victory.
When Joe Calzaghe beat Bernard Hopkins, Joe was #5 P4P and Hopkins was #4. A year later, after their fight, Joe was #3 and Hopkins #4. Hopkins maintained this high ranking by schooling an undefeated Kelly Pavlik less than six months after losing to Calzaghe.

Beat a shot Roy Jones and past it Hopkins.
Cool story bro. Joe Calzaghe held both of those titles at Super Middleweight. Where are all these clueless noobs coming from lately? It's like a mass immigration.
Yea, he beat Kessler for it, lmao.
Joe Calzaghe was in his late 30's himself.
so if jones was shot, and calzaghe and hopkins were out of their prime, why act as if these are atg worthy, quality wins...
thats just like floyd boys gloating over cotto, manny, and shane and using the excuse that floyd was as non prime
none of that s**t counts for much in the grand scheme of things...
Bro, Joe was a bum. He would have never fought for the WBC or the WBA world title... Way too afraid of those guys. I've gone to depth with this debate and it always comes out the same.

Calzaghe was just as bad in that fight, throwing wide shots, not connecting well, timing off. It takes two to make a fight THIS bad. It's not like DA v Bradley where Bardley actually looked to fight and go for the stoppage and all that other guy did was moan and whinge...and then quit.
I'm not sure how you can compare missing shots against a defensive fighter with the cheating and dirty tactics of Hopkins.
You can't blame Joe for the what happened in the Bhop fight. He came to scrap and all Hop did was clinch, fake injury and throw cheap shots. He was a disgrace and got a well-deserved L.

Roy lost a lot coming down from heavyweight burning muscle not to mention he was almost 40 when he fought joe and was no where near the top nice troll attempt.

Because haters just sit around waiting for a reason to jump in and bash said fighter. That daggum dude I swear you all alone in the woods and just wisper Andre Ward AND BOOM hes there.headbutting, lowblow, howntown fightin, it just gos on and on lol.
Haha. Joe Calzaghe haunts daggum's nightmares.
"Shot to crap"? No he wasn't. He found his kryptonite in Antonio Tarver then got KO'd by another top fighter in Glen Johnson. The problem with Roy is that people hyped him SO much, that when they were given a reality check they couldn't process it. There are people out there who say Roy is the best there ever was in his prime. No. He was a top fighter who lost to other top fighters. It happens.

The Jones win wasnt much, cmon now.
Beating Hopkins, king of the light heavies, who would go on to win more titles and the lineal title at least once more, was special. It was an ugly, boring, no fight though and in reality, neither man deserved to win that night and both should have been fined their fight fees.
However, in the context of being the best retirement victories, it is difficult to say otherwise. Marciano stopping Moore might be competition but there aren't many more beyond that.

Okay? Canelo landed with higher accuracy in 8 of 12 rounds and, despite throwing 200 less punches, somehow landed MORE POWER PUNCHES than Gennady.

I'm sick of people protecting Gennady like he's some innocent Khazakh who wasn't outboxed and lost ALL THE C H A M P I O N S H I P rounds on ALL scorecards (9 of 9).

Good for Byrd. I don't agree with her, but she stuck to her guns. She prefers effective boxing - accuracy and defense - and Canelo landed the better punches (more power punches) over the fight, demonstrated better defense, and was overall more accurate. Also, Canelo was never wobbled - not once.
Again, I don't even like GGG, in fact I'm the type of guy who pisses of GGG fanboys by telling it how I see it and not rating him very high - but in regards to accuracy - it really makes you think, may as well throw one punch a round and be sure it connects so you can have a 100% accuracy with punches thrown.
The majority of people though GGG won, and he did enough to win, he was the aggressor mostly.
At the end of the day I don't really care, GGG is a can crusher in a weak division but no-one can tell me he lost that fight, a 'close' fight doesn't mean you award the loser with a draw.
