A lot of European Christians participated and served that empire and all kinds of ethnic groups fought for them. The main identity of the Ottoman empire was being an Islamic empire and trying to spread Islam deep into Europe. If you were a Muslim you were one of them. If you were a Christian you had to pay extra tax but you could still have benefits and fight for them. They were the world's biggest superpower in the 16th century. They felt superior to the much smaller European kingdoms... Things changed however when Western Europeans consolidated their overseas empires and became the main global power. In the Central Europe the Ottomans could never beat the Habsburgs either. In fact, after they got pushed back from Vienna the second time in 1683, the Habsburgs then launched a counterattack and started reconquering the Balkans, mobilizing the local Slavic Christians as they advanced and inflicted heavy defeats on them. When the 18th century started, the Ottomans were already on the decline. Then in the 19th century they went with the "if you can't beat them join them" approach and started to copy European practices and European cultural norms and became more close to Europe, that's why modern Turkey isn't a typical Islamic country. By then they realized that their Islamic project essentially failed and the Islamic essence of the Ottoman empire was lost. Their empire finally got smashed during WWI and they had to create this new nation Turkey because that was all that was left, Istanbul and Asia Minor, where people speak the Turkish language and identity as Turks ethnically. Obviously they do have a great history, but their project ultimately failed and their identity is significantly different today. They're just another nation now, but in their mind they still think they're still some big empire. It's the same thing with some Western Europeans too like the Spanish. Russia is the only historic European empire that managed to keep everything together. Everyone else has to either ally with America or with Russia and their imperial past means nothing today.

They just don't have a fistfighting culture there like the Slavs, the British, the Latinos and the Americans have. Their pride was always based on having a huge empire with a huge population rather than on being superior as individuals. Arda Turan is a very good player. Hakan Sukur was very good. They also finished 3rd place at 2002 world cup. Lost 1-0 in the semi final to arguably one of the best Brazilian teams of all time. They're usually good on big tournaments but their big problem is their arrogance in qualifying where they lose to teams that they should have beat because they take them lightly and then they don't qualify on the big events. Once they get to a big event though, they usually do good there like the WC 2002 or Euro 2008. The Scandinavian countries are the opposite, they always qualify but never do anything special (not in the last 20 or so years at least).

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Checked the documentary jofre seemed like a great all rounder. Thanks for making me aware of him and I agree haven't seen a style remotely close to his today. No worries. The sad thing about Jofre footage is that apparently in the 1980's the TV company that owned all his South American fights burned down so there's basically no full fights out there. There's only been three full fights that made there way to collectors - Medel I, Harada I & II.

Sounds good, I will check it out. Stylistically who fights similar to him if anyone today? I really don't think there's anyone. He fought sort of crouched with a high guard and was an expert at countering and simply throwing shots whilst being in position to defend or attack and always remain in balance and poised. He was a marvel. His entire career only one man beat him and both losses were to ATG Harada in Japan and controversial (the first fight was a ripoff) and that was also when he was depleted making weight at the end of his reign. The fights were also marred by Harada being allowed to fight dirty.

Our country the United States sucks at the world level when it comes to soccer(football), just cause Turkey isn't great at boxing doesn't mean it sucks in sports in general. The country won 8 medals in the Rio Olympics. More than other countries.
