LARRY HOLMES had been talking for almost 20 minutes before he stopped suddenly and asked, "Do you enjoy asking me questions?" This was an audience with Holmes in the caf of the BXR gym in London, which WBA, IBO and IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has a stake in. He seemed surprised that people could hold such an interest in his views but when a heavyweight icon speaks, it is worth listening to. Click Here To Read More]
Lol this is delusional talk from Larry, he must still be bitter that Tyson kicked his arse with no pitty. Tyson would probably still kick AJs arse right now all old and fat.
Wilder and Joshua are just too big and strong
You might be right. I do seem to remember Frank Bruno being pretty big. Also Trevor Berbick. A past prime Tyson would definitely have issues with Wilder and Joshua. "Prime" iron Mike was definitely a force to be reckoned with.
Larry was great in his day who as mentioned above had one of the best jabs in boxing. He was very bitter immediately after his fight with Tyson and he’s holding on to that. When Tyson was in his prime he was indestructible. Nobody could come close to beating him. Imho even in today’s world a prime Mike Tyson would clean out the HW division.
Wilder and Joshua are just too big and strong
Over Rated Slugger
I kinda agree with Larry but who did he actually fight “coming up” after an older Ken Norton who lost brutally to George Foreman and after a 2nd lost to Ali. Larry’s resume after that Norton fight has the likes of Mike Weaver, and old Earnie Shavers, an old Ali, Trevor Berbick, Leon Spinks, Gerry Cooney, Marvis Frazier, Tim Witherspoon, Randall Tex Cobb, and a blown up light heavyweight, Micheal Spinks, who Tyson destroyed in his prime inside 1 round. Huh? Go sit down & shut up Larry!!!
Mike Tyson was a monster. People like to bring up the losses to Douglas, Lewis, and Holyfield, but they're quick to forget that all those fights came after Tyson fired Rooney. Without Rooney, Tyson was undisciplined. He was truly a different fighter.
I don't know how it would've went and no one could say for sure, but Tyson at this best was pretty good.
I think the only fighters who could beat Tyson at his best were Ali and Foreman. I think Ali was too skilled and Foreman just hit too hard.
Debatable but one would guess most would say, and it's probably true, that a prime Tyson would have ko'd Joshua within a few rounds. Joshua is not at that level at this stage of other great big fighters like Lewis and Bowe.
Currently? No. I don't see it. But it remains to be seen what a prime Joshua looks like. He still has time to really turn into something special if he's really that good. Time will tell.
I would favor Mike Tyson in his prime against every top heavyweight in the last 60 years except for Vitali Klitschko and Muhammad Ali.
I agree, there Is no doubt that he would have an excellent chance against any fighter, from any era on any given night.
A PRIME Mike Tyson hits much harder than any year of Wladimir Klitschko--and I was a big fan of the K bros. Tyson had that head movement and threw those 4 and 6 punch combinations filled with uppercuts. He was just so fast and an incredibly precise puncher with HUGE power. Anthony wouldn't have stood a chance. Big fan of AJ, but not a chance.
Maybe he is still mad that Tyson knocked him out when he was past his prime. The young prime Tyson was a vicious fighter with fast accurate combinations and great power in both hands. He had a short prime but he was a real monster in that prime. It's possible AJ would have knocked him out if Tyson didn't knock AJ out first. AJ hasn't shown an iron jaw or a great defense. I see it as a fight that either man might win and a fight that would end in a KO of one or the other.
