or is it hard to differentiate what a tko is then to give someone an 8 count?
lets be honest, we have all seen a fight where we thought a standing 8 count maybe would of made it better, last longer, maybe the fight would of changed due to the opponent throwing lots of hard shots, as in they get tired.
maybe they stopped it cause its likely the guy will be KO'd which aint good for health. I cant even think of a fight where its happened.
would you like to see them? anyone got any examples where it should of happened? maybe joshua klitscko imo.
No, I think it's useless. It counts as a knockdown and costs the boxer 2 points when he was not knocked down. If the boxer is helpless but still on his feet then stop the fight and call it a tko. The boxer himself can take a knee at any time and give himself an 8 count if he thinks he needs one.
This is something I believe is stupidly underrated as a strategy by boxers. I mean how many guys do we see hurt as f#ck throwing down vs guys who take a strategic knee to get a lil breather/recover? It virtually never happens.
And the guys who do this the most are the "opponent" type guys who are likely losing every round anyway & while using it strategically they are only using it strategically to not be KO'd & therefore suspended + lose money for future fights due to that suspension.
There's too much macho bs in boxing sometimes. I bet there are a great many upsets that'd have been not upsets if the guy who got dinged up just took a count & got himself back a lil bit.
yeah youre very right. So many fights could of changed, and the person who got tko'd could have survived if they take the knee or touch down smartly.
I can think of one fight where the guy who surely could of been tko'd got the win. Chico corrales going down 3 times in one round. He was fatigued, got up at 9 having his glove on the canvas (a british ref would of waved it off and it was weeks lol)
got up, had 15 - 20 seconds when he took out his mouth piece. tko corrales.
id say thats similar. miguel gets called kneeguel occasionally by people, but its more of a joke.
very true. Take a knee, but they seem to be too proud but a tactical knee is smart imo. But aint you seen a fight where the stoppage is terrible and you think a standing 8 count MAYBE.?
youre too right, but they are too proud, maybe the ref should do it for them with the count?
Like Pandas pointed out with the brain damage, sometimes fighters need to be protected from their pride. If they're too proud to say, I need to take a knee to catch my breath, they'll be too proud to say, I'm going to end up like Nick Blackwell if I keep fighting in here. We don't want brain trauma in boxing.
As far as bad stoppages, Weeks was horrible in Ward fight. He should have given Kov 5 mins to heal and then let Andre keep beating his ass for the rest of the fight. I've also seen fights where it's been stopped and I think nothing should have been done.
You want to see the ref stop the fight for a count at the slightest wobble?
this is my point really. Ive heard people talk about terrible stoppages. maybe a standing count would of made it more satisfying end.
I really dont want to see anyone hurt though.
No. The would give more room for controversy. I can hear it now, "Weeks should have gave Kov an 8 count." "No, he should have stopped it" back and forth. It would make a TKO an automatic problem.
The onus should be on the fighter. If he needs a break, take a knee

No. Never liked the S8C.
Matter of fact I'd like to see holding/clinching when hurt to be aggressively penalized.
And just beyond the damaged entertainment value of hemming up a knockdown/knockout I believe the more damage a fighter takes when he is legit hurt & is allowed to recover its ultimately more likely to lead to more severe brain damage & death in extreme instances.
very true. But have you ever seen a fight where youve been like hmm, maybe a standing count. Like a british referee jumping in 'saving' the fighter, and they are hardly hurt? calzaghe manfredo i think, i aint seen recently.

Good point about prolonged punishment
