Absolutely. I dont think either has a good enough defence to nullify the others offence. With all the build up and the atmosphere i think this will be a hell of a night.
Yep, I expect to add this to my foty list alongside AJ/Wlad, the super fly card and a couple others.
heck, if Mikey v LInares gets made :headbang:
I just finished the first part of my GGG vs Canelo breakdown. This is just talking about how GGG wins, where he can get to Canelo.
https://dksab.wordpress.com/2017/09/08/kazakh-thunder-and-mexican-fire-ggg-vs-canelo-breakdown-pt-1/
I think the major attributes for GGG here are his jab, and his combination punching. Canelo is very open to jabs imo, he spends too much time looking to counter them and leaves himself open in doing so. GGG's jab is unlike any other that he has faced. Maybe not the most nuanced (that would have to be Money May), but certainly the hardest. I want to a 'Lemieux fight' volume of jabs coming from Golovkin in this match. He has the height, maybe a bit of reach, i think he definitely has the timing.
Canelo also has slow feet and often freezes in the face of combination punching, either in the middle of the ring or when he backs himself into the ropes. GGG has some of best combinations in the world. The creativity, the power, the technique, the way he opens up different targets is all beautiful. If Canelo is as vulnerable to these attacks as he was vs Cotto and Smith, then he could be in serious trouble in this fight.
Im looking for a gameplan from GGG similar to th eLemieux fight. Not reckless, a consistent jab, pressure when you can pressure and break him down safely. If he gets gungho and crude like he has a lot recently then Canelo has plenty of skill, vicious combinations and counters of his own
I havent done my pro Canelo breakdown yet so im not 100% on his plan. Off my head i think GGG struggled a lot with Jacobs because he was able to punch with him and didnt cover up in the exchanges. That has to be a part of his plan to stop GG freely marching forward.
GGG often drops back in the face of combinations from his opponent and has very little countering ability to keep them honest. Jacobs, Lemieux, Stevens, even WW Brook and featherfisted Murray were able to back him up and land good shots. The key is to follow him when he retreats and keep the attack going. His defence on the backfoot is not great.
Canelo also needs to pivot around GGG rather mmoving too laterally. He doesnt have quick feet so he needs to maximise the effect of what movement he does have by moving round GG in tight circles after throwing his own shots. He did this brilliantly vs Angulo. Angulo would step in (with no jab, and slowly it must be said) and Canelo would light him up with a combination before stepping round the side and forcing Angulo to retreat.
Really interesting match up. Both have weapons to hurt the other.
If I had to pick now, right after doing a pro GGG breakdown, I would go with Golovkin.
That's quality stuff.
You said Murray is feather-fisted, which he definitely is, but comparing to Canelo, can Canelo possibly have all that much power than Murray, seeing that Murray is a lot bigger? Doesn't seem likely.
At some point, these guys are going to unleash! There is no way this fight stays a chess match, even if it starts as one

You echo my thoughts!!! I believe Canelo would have worked on keeping his back off the ropes in training along with defense. Canelo isn't going to war and GGG isn't chasing him face first getting predictably countered.
It will be calculated for first few rounds but you don't calculate your way to victory, so am looking forward to how the fight evolves.

Canelo-
Upper body movement, handspeed and counter punching are the keys to victory I think Alvarez will focus on. He won't look to engage too early, he will be patient, precise and up his tempo the longer it goes. He will keep his back off the ropes more than he has done in recent fights and answer any attacks with his own combinations sending out a message to triple G he won't be dominated
Golovkin-
I think Golovkins gameplan will surprise a lot of people I don't see him coming out fast leading with his face and looking to mix it straight away. I see a more considered approach behind the jab, steady pressure and keeping it long. Similar to the limieux fight Golovkin will not take chances early on. As the rounds progress he will step in behind the jab more looking for a left hook to the body, cutting off the ring but not losing his composure under fire. In the late rounds his steady pressure will have turned into relentless pressure, he just has to remember to let his hands go more than he did vs Jacobs

I think both guys just need to fight their fight. I don't think either have great variation in their work. Golovkin either powers forward cutting the ring off, or he gets behind a stiff jab but still essentially relies on power. Canelo fights one way basically due to being pretty much flat footed, but what he does, he does excellently, as does Golovkin.
I don't think either guy can afford to stray too far from what they do best. They're in with too good of an opponent to stray from their strengths. I think Golovkin takes it because i don't think Canelo's upper body movement will be enough to avoid taking shots without the ability to move around the ring too.
Stylistically, i think the fight is ideal for both guys in a way. Canelo is essentially going to be right in front of GGG all night because he hasn't got the feet to get away from him, but Canelo would prefer a guy to be right there coming at him rather than chasing, again because he doesn't have the feet for it. I also don't think Canelo will want to engage too early but i don't think he will have much choice when he can't exactly get away from GGG in the ring.
I do see Golovkin maybe getting behind the jab for a round or two but if Canelo's upper body movement is good and he's sharp with the counters, then Golovkin will just try walking him down instead, especially if he feels Canelo's shots are not too heavy.
It's going to be a case of who's style beats the others style, rather than making big adjustments during the fight.
Ok, lets get down to the real boxing. What gameplan do you guys think either one of these men needs to employ to beat the other?

GGG's game plan should be working behind his jab, use his superior footwork to present different angles, pressuring the hell out of Canelo, and working the body early to exhaust him.
Canelo's game plan should be to stay off the ropes, try to take away GGG's jab with sharp pull counters or leading more often that not, and putting together combinations to stifle GGG's offense.
Duran has never lacked heart. You are mistaken if you base your view on the second Leonard fight. He got pissed off at Leonard's antics and foolishly stopped fighting. Did you watch him against Barkley a man much much bigger than him. Barkley hit him so hard with a punch that Duran spun around like a top. He could have quit but he ended up dropping Barkley and winning the fight. Gil Clancey who knows a thing or two about fighters was amazed at the skill and heart that Duran showed.
I never said Duran lacked heart throughout his career but against Leonard he certainly did. Take it or leave it.
... gameplan??? :)
... well: "everyone has a plan until they get punched in the..." :)

True and I think this video illustrates the subtle skills of Golovkin. It all has to do with timing and rhythm. Pretty interesting.

Extremely interesting... Thanks
Id be more inclined to believe jr could do that lol
I dunno if Canelo mentally checked out against mayweather. What I saw was a 22 yo kid iwth limited top level experience against an atg who jus tso happened to get eveyrthing he wanted, in particular the weight demand.
Even at that stage Canelo had trouble with 154, let alone 152. He was physically, rather than psychologically unable to compete.
Btw its important to note I mentioned heart rather than confidence. Extremely confident fighters can lack heart, look at someone like Duran, heck in recent times McGregor and many others.

where does the story come from? who is hendrix? if theres no one backing it up then it probably isnt likely, considering I havent even seen world level mws get GGGs body, let alone hurt him there
It's on YouTube...

His most notable fight was a loss by KO to Joe Smith Jr.
If Joe and GGG had sparred, and Joe said he knocked GGG down with a body shot, it would be a bit more believable.
Id be more inclined to believe jr could do that lol
It seems like it, he looks very confident now. But there is a blemish in his past: he mentally checked out against the great Mayweather, and you can't erase that. If GGG can establish mental dominance of the same level against now matured Canelo, it remains to be seen though. Great fight!

ah ok, never heard of him before
A TKO should be likely on paper with the size and power difference but Canelo has a huge heart. Just makes it even more interesting.
