Yea, I kept harping on that before the fight, where did people get the idea that Brook was powerful? Because he's big? Brook fights really tall and stiff and loses out on leg power (which is too bad since he's walking on tree trunks). Spence, the opposite, he gets coiled up like a cobra, pushes with his legs and really turns his hips and shoulders into his punches. I don't even think Spence is particularly strong, he just has a technique that sends a lot of power home.
Anyhow, that's off subject but i couldn't resist that tangent.
I understand man. Had brook had better footwork, he coulda made it through 12. Im guessing those tree trunk legs as you mentioned didnt help him in this 1. That pivoting off the punch works on guys like shawn porter that like to bury their head against your chest and wail away but on a guy like spence that leaves you turning into body shots.
If Thurman can withstand a few flush body shots, he has the power and legs to win a UD imo. Thurman uses lateral movement VERY well to set up punches.
What do you think of Terrance Crawford? I think he fits that bill. I have high expectations for him because he has GREAT defense and hes mean in the ring.
I see him as a complete fighter thus far. But, he's been in with limited or overmatched opposition up to now. I'm curious how he stacks up at 147 against the top 5 guys. He is also hittable, which isn't a big problem when it's John Molina landing leather, could be a problem when Spence, Thurman or Porter land. Time will tell.
Spence is not rock em sock em. He is an "athletic overwhelmer" he uses skills, including cutting off the ring, a sublime jab, punch variation and body work to leave his mark. Floyd is a master counter puncher and defensive master. I prefer skills over everything so I appreciate them both for different reasons
Hes no Brandon Rios but he got hit A LOT sacrificing defense for offense. Dont get me wrong, it paid off BUT had Brook been dropping bombs and not brownies, the fight woulda been different.
I'd like to see a fighter who splits the difference. Someone polished with both offense and defense. A good chin, hard puncher, and puts on an entertaining fight. Spence still needs work. He looks a little awkward at times and isn't the best at slipping punches. A younger Mayweather was better at slipping punches. Post-Gatti he started to move, run and clinch more. I don't think a fighter should rely completely on any one defensive style. Mosley relied on slipping, which works well when you are young but not so much as your reflexes fade. Jones and Ali depended too much on reflexes, leaning back and moving straight back in their youth, which didn't carry over so well as they got older. Running and clinching makes for dull fights. As a fighter ages I prefer to see effective movement, counter-punching and blocking. Create openings, improve your inside game, counter.

Honestly I ALWAYS thought Brook was overrated along with his power, had Brook had some Maidana type power and hit Spence that clean, it may have been an early closing. Spence did show a chin though so cant take to much from him but again, you cant take that many punches, if he plans to move to 154 soon, hes gonna have to tighten up, those dudes up there can crack.

I'd go with young Floyd who could walk his opponent down, beat them up, and still not get hit.
Exactly, Floyd in his prime was "skillfully" better than any fighter I've ever seen
I love how Floyd always gets compared to these big WW's and MW's who start out with as much power as Floyd started out with at Super Feather. Compare Spence to like Leonard or someone who's as big as him and started at 140-147. Let's see Spence sock and bop at 160, which would be about equal to Floyd's 17lb jump from SFW to WW, there would be 4 spare lbs but 160 is good enough. He will have to change his style.
I understand but he gets hit A LOT doing so. I was actually surprised how much Kell hit him. He took a punch well but so did Vernon Forrest until he met some crazy Nicaraguan.
But you can tell, it's not from lack of skill, but he's so confident in his power, and he's only worried about creating that space to start cracking.
True, but the people who start these threads have short term memory. They constantly compare prime fighters to "Money" Mayweather instead of "Pretty Boy" Floyd
I think Money Mayweather created hate because I recall him standing toe to toe. He outboxed a big puncher in Mosley center ring and was doing the same to a young ortiz before that fiasco ending.
If I was a fighter id love to have Mayweathers skills because I don't like getting hit much, as a fan its really hard to say. but most fans would say spence because its more action but a fan like me enjoys the action as well as watching a fighter mentally and skillfully beat his opponent and not get hit by other professional boxers. what about you?
The young Mayweather Yes.
Spence is a damned good fighter and I appreciate his personality..
Honestly, even though I'm much more a fan of Spence than Mayweather, Floyd's skill as a boxer was much tighter.
Spence isn't as refined but I like him more as a person, and some of my favorite boxers are guys like he and Ward who get gritty and use many methods to find victory.
Always a good answer from Foxx. Yeah man I am not a fan of Mayweather but I respect him and his style created longevity and has been proven time and time again hes hard to beat.
