I first heard about him when he dropped Broner in sparring.
He's not loud, not mean, not a 1-punch monster, not any of the things that tend to generate a lot of superficial hype. But, for a while now, a lot of people have deemed him to be the next big thing. It seems to have started with industry people who have worked with/around him but I'm curious, where did all the "hype" come from?

Mayweather upped the hype quite a bit, PBC has pushed him quite a bit. Plus he has put on great performances thus far.
He messed Floyd up. that's where it all came from.
Floyd has always been overrated himself. he is actually not that athletic. he never fought a true fast twitching negro in his prime either.
the only guy was Kostya Tszyu's leftover Judah who was a mental case. but Judah made Floyd look stupid for 5 rounds then gassed like he always do.
It's why he never fought prime Khan. You can say what you like about the glass-jawed clown now, but at the time his blurring hand speed was all wrong for Floyd.
Redd... A+ Troll Thread a rather finesse way to insinuate things :)
No, no trollin brother. I swear.
I'm actually warming up to the guy quite a lot. I'm always skeptical of guys that get a lot of hype so I'm pretty critical at first. I was that way with Canelo, Ward, Kovalev, and others but gave them credit when they showed that they're really at that level.
I'm just really interested in the social momentum behind Spence because it started really early in his career and it wasn't pushed by any of the usual boogeyman shyt. It seemed to come from his peers. You don't see that a lot. And, it truly seems like he's destined for greatness.
From trainers and other fighters. It actually started in the Olympics. They asked the Olympic members one by one who they thought
1. Works the hardest
2. Would be most likely to succeed
Spence was the UNANIMOUS choice. From hearing that story I kept an eye on him. Then you see coaches like Roach, Kenny Porter, and Abel Sanchez. Fighters like Floyd, Broner, and Charlo and that's where it comes from. His peers that do this for a living believe in him.
I think it's more promotional hype than anything. Also in general people tend to overrate offensive fighters when they get stoppages over decent, previously unstopped fighters. Eg. Matthysse after Peterson.
A little enthusiasm is fine, but if you're one of the people with him on your P4P list you deserve to be laughed at.
I first heard about him through Floyd Mayweather Jr. saying he was going to be a top fighter in the near future. Also think some poster on here had a sig or avatar with him in.
it strikes me as strange. i dont understand why he is getting so much more hype than the other guys. is getting 10x the hype of tank yet hes not really done anything more. charlo has proven himself against better opposition too. Americas already got a world class welterweight in thurman yet rather than praise him, people would rather hype spence and see him as the future of the division. And i swear i watch a different spence to everyone else, he doesnt look hugely amazing to me, i think hes always going to be aroundt he world scene but the way he is spoke about, is of him being a true super elite talent. he is absolutely nowhere near the skill level of a young mayweather. looks pretty hittable to me, real frail look about him too. them two combined doesnt usually end well. i think he gets seriously exposed tomorrow night.
There's nothing strange about it, what's strange about world class trainers, and fighters, who have no ties to him saying he's the real deal from what they have seen with their own eyes, then turning into hype by fans?
Of course people are going to take notice to something most trainers and boxers don't do and that is go out of their way to praise a guy not linked to them, like they do with Spence.

It's pretty strange. Some people even had him in their PFP list....I mean i don't even know how that's possible with the guys he's been in with
First heard about him when Mayweather was trying to pit him with Thurman who probably didn't even know who the guy was. You probably saw his undercard fight the first time I did. I didn't even remember the opponent. He won, but I wasn't impressed. He was getting countered viciously, and maybe most fighters do, but I'm just saying it didn't leave a lasting impression. So maybe this fight will, if he wins.
You can tell he has that IT factor in the ring, and also all the praise from other pros it doesn't just happen if you ain't bout it.
Yes, same two reasons for me.
He messed Floyd up. that's where it all came from.

I'm not surprised tbh. Guys like Ray Leonard, Hearns would've all beaten Floyd at WW.
One of my uni friends that follows boxing used to talk loads about him back in early 2013 saying he's going to be the next star in boxing and I remember boxrecing him and seeing a prospect with 3 or 4 fights, saw he didn't win a medal at the Olympics and wondered "what makes him think Spence is/will be special?" ..... by then no one on here was talking about him and then by 2015 his name started popping up on here and I started YouTubing his fights. I could see he was a quality fighter but it wasn't enough to convince me he would be the next star.
After Steamrolling Bundu and Algieri, I'm still not completely convinced he is the truth but it's hard to ignore the sparring stories with Floyd and Broner but hey those type of stories helped do a lot for GGG's hype and they are doing the same thing for Spence.
Tomorrow is D-day for Spence, we get to see if it's real or not. It's not over if he loses but he'll probably never be seen as "The Truth" again if he does.
I heard about this Broner thing like 4 years ago, then you hear about the Mayweather incident, then you hear more and more boxers and trainers speaking about him. I think it's safe to say that this fight would answer a lot of things about him. He has been building himself up gradually, he wasn't sold as someone that was avoided by everyone at 147 even though his handlers could have, they waited for his opportunity and they are taking him abroad to prove himself, like like all round.

I think you answered your own question. Yeah, i think it started with the Broner thing and then other people added fuel to the fire saying he's the next big thing, mostly people around him or that have been in the gym with him.
You're right though, he doesn't possess those kind of things that usually generate hype. It's not even like he was an outstanding amateur or olympic medalist or anything either.
A lot of people in the game do think he is the real thing though, so we'll see, he might be. Plenty of so called "experts" have been wrong many times before though, with guys even more hyped than Spence too.
