To start off, please, no off the top negative comments. This is to be an analysis. Take a look at their personalities, lifestyles, division they are in, skills, approach, training habits, etc. And if someone can list their strengths and any weaknesses and give them a numerical value such as speed, power, defense, etc., that would be great. In a few years they will have established what impact they will ultimately have in the game. Right now, Davis has a head start, obviously. Both are very talented and have star potential the way I see it. Thoughts?
To me it is impossible to say because it is a matter of dedication to the game because I think both have legitimate talent. They are different types of fighters but either way can be made to work out if the will to make it so is there.
Davis has sort of made it to the top, so now we get to see his dedication does he keep working hard and getting better or does he stagnate. I don't take weight as anything important with Davis because I think he was never long for 130, it was something he could do and the opportunity was there to go down and make something happen. I think 135 is his wheelhouse class and while he doesn't really have the frame to move up far I think he could handle 135 fine.
Stevenson just started out, he has a great pedigree and has a good long lean boxing frame that could carry him through a few classes. I don't think he has great power but I think he can be an effective puncher as he breaks away from amateur habits and really starts to sit on his punches. He is just starting out though, so it will be long time until his dedication to the game is truly tested. If he starts to stagnate before then that is a very bad sign for his long term potential.
Why are we even comparing the 2?I also meant to say that this topic came up because both guys are fighting tonight and I thought about their future, how far they will go.
Why are we even comparing the 2?Thats an honest question. Because while both have totally different styles, both have been seen as potential superstars and I'm having a hard time picking who will go the furthest in that direction if I had to guess. I guess Davis is more explosive and Shakur a little more slick, Davis more power, Shakur more speed. Both super talented so its a toss up to me with the slightest edge to Shakur.
Stevenson! I think Pedigree and experiences like fighting way in the Brazil in the Olympic Finals in your Divisions against another GREAT young fighter in Robeisy Ramirez and also dealing with Losing those are valuable experience that is only going to help make him a GREAT fighter IMO
He will have his ups and downs though early in his career like most young fighters, the difference is not that we get to see all of their pro fights so it will be fights in which Internet Losers will label him "OVERRATED" because he didn't blow away the competition like he should've but once he put it all together he will start to make things look very EASY and dominate
You're asking this on the heels of Davis missing weight, now you'll get knee-jerk reactions. In reality Davis is a champ and he beat another champ from the underdog role. Not only beat him but stopped him and many were under the impression that Pedraza would "expose him". Stevenson has 1 pro fight and he went the distance. We don't know much about him as a pro.
I already read a bunch of knee jerk reactions in this thread.
IF I had to ride with one I'm picking Shakur because of his size gives him more longevity to move up and still be effective. "Tank" as good as he is will hit roadblocks in weight/size above 135lbs max.
mirko, of course fans want both to succeed. We can also speculate on how their careers will unfold head to head.
One thing that bugs me already (and it's common nowadays): Davis is given props for being a young belt holder and yet that same distinction somehow has no teeth in regards to requesting compelling matchups. Yes, fighting abroad is commenable but ultimately I would've preferred a Lomachenko-Davis fight this weekend... anywhere.
It's too early to know with Stevenson, tbh; let's see him run together 5-6 fights to get a gauge how his power translates to the pro ranks.
In terms of Davis, his power seems to be legit, he's got a title at 130lbs, and he's under Floyd's banner (with interest from Showtime and Under Armor backing him).
You add that he's got a MGM Resorts venue (with at least 3,000 seats) not too far from his home base, and a loyal camp around him (likely adding the discipline to keep him at 130lbs/135lb for as long as possible), and he should have a good run.
Definitely Stevenson. Better amateur background and more disciplined.
Gervonta is having troubles making weight and he's 22 years old. He's only going to get fatter and sloppier and his career may end early.
IMO Stevenson has a style that's better suited for a long term career. Physically he'll move up in weight more slowly. He's got a sharp boxing mind and he seems to be mentally mature for his age. i.e. less out-of-ring distractions. Top Rank has a solid record of building successful careers.
Davis has a thicker build that gains weight easily; he may have to fight bigger/taller guys sooner than Stevenson. Future opponents with longer reach, movement, and decent pop won't let him sit down on his punches. One big plus, however, is that his defensive skills are excellent for a guy with heavy fists. It allows him to stay in range to dish out punishment more often. With Floyd's support, his options are wider than most.I agree. Both guys are very fluid and Davis throws a good assortment in his combinations and they come at angles which was what Pedraza had a really hard time dealing with and succumbed to. Stevenson as far as divisions go, has the most upside of the two because of his height and reach and size as you hit on. If I had to pick who would go further, my guess is Stevenson. But not by a big stretch I think because Davis already has a title now and and the youngest champ which is impressive. I dont see them as hype at all....what I see are legitimate skills and abilities. I do not see Stevenson getting caught up in the nightlife at all. He is a good clean young man. Hard to tell if Davis will get caught up in the afterhours fun stuff and get distracted, hopefully they will stay grounded. I think they will stay grounded from what I gather. Most importantly, not read their own news clippings and always stay motivated.

Ultimately will have the greatest success - Shakur Stevenson or Gervanta Davis? | BoxingScene Community
