you can see the decline in US boxing over the past decade with the lack of medals over the past 4 Olympics
Andre Ward was the last male gold medalist.
What is the main catalyst for the decline in US boxing?
Shakur Stevenson was pretty damn close and probably should have won the gold medal.
The 2016 Class has certainly seen a resurgence. Much better than the 2012 class.
yea...a lot of our kids turn pro a lot earlier than other countries

He lost to Zou bro. A fighter that is mediocre at best. When you have someone like Zou winning gold it tells me the division just isn't that good. I could be wrong though.
Let's put Warren to the side for a minute. What do you say when the US has someone like Breazeale representing them at the Olympics?
Zou doesn't make a good pro, but he did win two olympic gold medals.
I would never balk at losing to someone winning two olympic golds.
Thats the same category as Rigondeaux and Loma.
They turned out to be better pro's obviously. But Zou accomplished the same as them.
I know the team GB boxers get paid a very good wage from our national lottery funding.
They have world-class facilities within the English institute of sport and access to everything that elite athletes do and train together up in Sheffield. And that kind of centralised elite training environment can only maximise potential.
Tbh, British boxing should have returned more medals at the last Olympics than they did. And that is just Britain - we're not major players really.
That said lottery funding gets reduced if success isn't forthcoming. However, British boxing medals are always held in high regard.
The US wont get any medals unless it is phenom like that Stevenson lad. That other kid with the Mexican name who got the bronze did a fantastic job too I doubt anybody thought he'd do anything.
A lot of foreign countries pay their amateurs to stay amateur. Basically American kids are fighting semi-pro's at the international level.
Exactly...I guess they thought we didn't notice lol
I don't think you're out of line for saying it. Emmanuel Steward agreed with you.
"It’s become popular to laud the Cuban amateur system for producing such outstanding amateur success as well as technically excellent boxers like Gamboa, Rigondeaux, Solis and Casamayor. But Steward has an interesting viewpoint…
“I don’t think we should be going overboard on what the Cubans are doing just yet. Because when they were fighting our kids, they were professional fighters. Cubans boxing in the Olympics then going back to preparing for another of a million tournaments. And we have amateur kids, like a 14 yr old kid just fighting for one Olympics. And these Cubans have been in two Olympics and then are preparing for another..."
“I got to know the Cubans in 1984. Just prior to the Olympics, my Ricky Womack knocked out Pablo Romero which was the next big thing. I had Frank Tate beat their champion, it was in California, The Sports Arena. I had Teofilio Stevenson, who knocked out Tyrell Biggs – I was training Biggs then (after the KO loss), barely won a decision (over Biggs). I had Pernell Whitaker, he beat the Cubans. Mark Breland beat the Cuban. When I would meet with the Cuban coach he would say I’m the only coach he had respect for. Because my guys were boxing against professional men. And when they boxed the Cubans, they were used to that, instead of some kid coming from high school, some local gym. And so they didn’t hold up as well. They didn’t fight in the Olympics in Sept (1984) but we would have done well regardless.”
“The Cubans have some techniques, some programs, and what happened with Rigondeaux, when he started running (in a recent fight in the U.S.) I said on the air, not to be disrespectful, I said, That’s what they’re used to doing in the amateurs. You come back after the first round, you’re up 7-2. That’s two rounds, if you don’t do anything and there’s no real action, the next two rounds, you win. So run. And you know how to take off the clock and that’s what they do. So he actually went back to that program, just run. That’s what they do.”

Amateur boxing corruption going to that terrible point scoring system.
The scoring was a lot better pre 1980s and more realistic...less robberies
More credit for real hurtful shots, defense n ring generalship
I'll tell you why, guys don't hang around the AMs too long in the states they need to make a living.
You summed it up
They aren't making thousands off sponsors like other countries here
You would have to look at the ages of other boxers from 2004 on, wouldn't you?
Just because this particular class was young doesn't necessarily invalidate his argument.
Thank you for comprehensive thinking bro sheesh
I wasn't trying to make complex statements
To be fair, that was the case in this Olympics but look at other Cuban greats like Teofilo Stevenson and Felix Savon etc. How many Olympics did they participate in?
Those guys literally were grown men fighting against teenagers or close to it.
That was my point bro
Yes, but That's not the point.
The thread is about USA not winning a gold medal since 2004, that hasn't nothing to do with the age of the other boxers, like i said, look at how young the fighters of this class were and already Yoka, Gaibnazarov, Concencaio and Daniyar are turning pro, That's 4/10 of the champions with chance of more turning pro.
USA boxing has been awful in comparison with the 80's for example and It hasn't nothing to do with the other countries.
You would have to look at the ages of other boxers from 2004 on, wouldn't you?

You were the one mentioning how they beat "kids" when they are older than 25, the funny thing was that 7/10 of them were younger than that.
So you are not replying to my arguments, you are bringing Lomachenko and Golovkin when i never mentioned them and i'm just waiting for you to explain me why your argument of "these old guys are the reason why USA doesn't wins medals" is still valid after i explain you that almost all the champions were younger than 25 and in their first games.
Also the fact that a USA boxer was one of the few three time olympians in 2012 but i didn't saw you talking bs about Warren right?.
I don't care about the nationality of the boxers, but you are talking bs and i want to see real arguments.
To be fair, that was the case in this Olympics but look at other Cuban greats like Teofilo Stevenson and Felix Savon etc. How many Olympics did they participate in?
Those guys literally were grown men fighting against teenagers or close to it.
Why are you talking so much bs?.
Dusmatov 49kg (23)
Zoirov 52kg (23)
Ramirez 56kg (22)
Concencaio 60kg (28)
Gaibnazarov 64kg (24)
Daniyar 69kg (25)
Lopez 75kg (23)
La Cruz 81kg (27)
Tischenko 91kg (29)
Yoka +91kg (23)
Of all the olympic champions only 3 were more than 25.
7 were younger than Rau Shee Warren, a three time olympian but i guess he wasn't a grown man fighting kids right?.
now lets see how long it takes for them to turn pro.....
you pulled one american out of your azz bwahahahahahaha....very few american fighters participate in multiple olympics like cubans and eastern euro
how old was GGG.....Loma.....Kov when they turned pro....look at how old guys like Beterbiev, Barrera
American fighters are fighting bums until they reach their 20th or 30th fight. Soft touches.
Sure it is. 3 of the 10 ring magazine p4p list are eastern european descent and come from soviet bloc countries. And soon the whole p4p list will be full of eastern euros. Cry some more?
bwahahahahahahahahaa
GGG dont belong in the p4p...he hasnt even beat anyone near it
Kov and loma deserve it..look at their accomplishments and they actually won all their belts in the ring...unlike G string
G string has 30 fights vs no names aka bums genius lol
Grown ass men in their late 20s fighting kids 18-22 isn't something to be proud of lol
Our kids turn pro @ 18-22
90% of the time and these guys are raising families in Europe fighting youths kmsl
It isn't really translating in the pros besides a dead division like cruiserweight
Dudes are 28 making pro debuts...WTF

Well he would have been facing more skilled opponents in the amateurs than he will be in the pros for the next few years. But of course he wouldn't be getting paid so I understand the decision
In 4 years he could possible be a top ten contender or close to a title shot... That trumps amatuer glory
Our kids aren't getting paid from sponsors like Cuba, Former soviet union
Thats why Mexicans n Americans say fvck it...go pro
Also its no head gear now.... Might as well get paid taking lumps, cuts, headbutts ,etc
