What does it add to Floyds Legacy?
I'm not trolling, but over the years there have been other "Circus Fights" discussed and remembered as such.
As an example, Canelo/Khan, Golovkin/Brook and Garcia/Salka are a few pointless fights that caused some debate on the forums, but they were all from the same sport.
Both are egotists, which makes for natural friction as Floyd probably misses the spotlight and McGregor wants to keep it on himself, especially at press conferences :poke: which Floyd also handles with confidence.
But that is the issue for me.
Beyond the entertaining banter there is nothing in their respective histories and training to suggest that this will be anything more than a lucrative mismatch, which is fair enough and given the chance anyone of us would probably sign anything to access that kind of payday.
But neither of them are under any financial pressure (I assume) so the risk is to the detriment of the two sports involved, which both have alluded to being ambassadors for respectively.
What do you Guys think? Boxing has already started to lose its identity IMO, but this fight has the potential to dilute the identities of two great sports and open the door for even worse crossovers. That wouldn't be good for any fighters legacy.
Fingers crossed it doesn't happen :fingersx::boxing:
Great fighters have been winning boxing matches into their mid 40's. It'd be a much more surprising turn of events if a 0-0 record non-boxer beat a 40 year old great boxer then vice versa. This ain't really that complicated.
You can line things up to try to sell it as competitive & they will certainly be doing that during the promotion to try to maximize the revenue, but the majority of people considering this fight today already know whats up. And by Sunday morning post-fight the ones who didn't will realize they got hustled a lil bit..like they often do with PPV boxing.
Conor simply needs to not get KO'd early or get killed & its a moral W for him. Plus the better he jumps that don't get KO'd early or die hurdle = the more people that'll watch his next MMA PPV cuz this guy isn't even a boxer & everyone that'll watch this fight will know that. This fight could end up being a hijacking of casual boxing fans & non-combat sports fans if Conor merely has a moment or two vs Floyd.
I get what you're saying, but I'd still disagree. If McGregor ends up not laying a glove on Floyd, the casual fight audience isn't going to bother with the man's next fight.
Beyond that, folks like Joe Rogan (who does have a really good podcast) have already started laying out the argument. Imagine Skip Bayless, and the boxing media that's largely assembled against Floyd, pushing the outline already laid out.
It's a circus, but the amount of floks who will understand that it's a circus before fight night is being drastically overstated
It might not be as low, but it can't be much higher than that. Its a guy with no pro fights ffs lol. Throw the top 147lb amateur in with Floyd in September. How much of a chance does he have in a 12 round fight? Conor has less boxing experience than that guy. There's ATG boxers 10 years removed from the ring that should be beating pro debut guys. The bar can't be very high for anyone being reasonable here.
If this fight gets made I'm curious what the weight will be. Cuz Conor looks like death at 145 & Floyd has never fought above 150. This will be a big factor potentially. Maybe there'll be a Floyd advantage, maybe there'll be a Conor advantage with the weight, but thats to be determined still.
Idk why so many boxing fans think MMA fans are brain dead. In my experience MMA fans are smarter on average than boxing fans & far less biased & disrespectful of combat sport athletes. Go look at some MMA forums. There are maybe 3% more guys on those forums as on ones like NSB saying Conor will dead Floyd with 1 shot.
This fight has little to do with boxing fans or MMA fans who all know Conor has like a 1% chance of winning & thats only cuz everyone gots a shot & I'm rounding up. This fight is for the casual sports fans more than anyone. Those are the suckers thinking sh^t like "that Irish MMA guy with the beard sure seems to punch hard & Floyd just runs".
Conor McGregor is the UFC's top star, and the UFC has been selling him, in essence, as "the baddest man on the planet" (though Nate Diaz kind of messed that up, lol).
Floyd is Floyd, but he's also 40 years old and would've been out of the ring for near two years on the fight night.
The notion that the hype behind this fight is going to have to do anything with the actual merits is a bit much.
The hype on this fight is going to be Mayweather-Alvarez , but on steroids; a small chunk of the boxing audience picked up the reality that Alvarez still needed some extra schooling, but basically everyone else fell in with the young, strong, physically imposing star just coming into his prime.
Add **** talk in English, and the other fighter carrying an entire sport on their back, and you've got what I think the hype ends up looking like.
It will add zero to his boxing legacy, wont take away from it either, but it will add to his business achievements in how far a fighter can go which will probably never be repeated .
I think it does a little for Floyd's legacy. It will be if not the biggest fight of all time the second biggest. Surpassing the numbers for the Pacquiao fight will be almost impossible, but a fight of this magnitude should easily be able to surpass the 2.4 million set by the Dela Hoya one. When people look back on the number of illustrious events that Floyd was apart of during his career, this will be another huge one on his resume. To that end, it enhances his legacy somewhat as a relevant superstar in boxing (and sports in general, especially as this will be a huge crossover event.)
Of course the competitiveness of the fight is a joke; Floyd will easily go 50-0 and no one will take it seriously, but that's not the only component there is to it.
I think even the non-MMA fans, non-Boxing fans & casual combat sports fans that this fight is ultimately for can forgive a 0-0 guy losing to a 49-0 guy & this fight is going to steer more fans like the ones mentioned more towards MMA than against it.
This fight is so uneven the bar for a moral victory for Conor is extremely low & the opportunity for Conor to destroy his rep is tiny. It'd have to be a KO in 30 seconds or something like that for Conor's career to go down the toilet & even then I wouldn't bet on it cuz a legendary boxer SHOULD stop a guy who's never boxed professionally in 30 seconds in most non-combat sports fans minds than not. Every minute a 0-0 guy lasts with a 49-0 "ATG" boxer makes the 0-0 guy look better.
Floyd's rep is much more on the line since its Floyd's sport they are competing in. I used this example before, but let me expand on it. If Tom Brady loses a 1 on 1 basketball game to LeBron James he's supposed to lose. Its not gonna lower Brady's value in the NFL. But if Brady makes it close or even competitive for a short period of time than it looks bad on Lebron for not being able to just dominate with ease someone inexperienced in his chosen professional it could very well enhance his overall value in & out of & for the NFL. And I don't think most people are under the illusion that fighting is fighting when it comes to professional combat sports that clearly require different expertise & training to excel at.
I don't think the bar os going to be set as low as you seem to think it'll be set; Mayweather would be almost 41 years old and two years removed from his last fight, Floyd walks around in the low 150s, McGregor is hitting his physical prime, McGregor is likely in the high 160s when fighting fit, and the MMA world will latch onto the thinking that McGregor deads guys with one shot if he lands.
You add that McGregor is Irish (with folks of Irish descent spread throughout the country, and folks wanting to be Irish, McGregor is likely to still end up being the champion of middle America), and that folks have been waiting basically 15 years to finally see Floyd get his receipt (some folks may have held grudges longer, but the Jose Luis Castillo fight seems to be the "start" of the backlash) and there's a very real chance that the hype behind the fight will end up turning McGregor into the hoped for "conqueror of Floyd".
The hardcore boxing audience, when it comes down to it, might make up 20% of the audience of folks who will get hooked in for the fight.
This helps MMA too. Although McGregor is going to get schooled and probably stopped, it's not his sport and it will still have MMA in the spotlight for weeks.
It doesn't help MMA if one of their most feared strikers ends up not laying a glove on a 40-year old Floyd, is made to look like an utter amateur with his hands, and then gets stopped late, MMA would've had all this spotlight put on their sport, only for casual sports fans to see that "MMA's top guy" 'can't even really fight'.
Why would a non-MMA fan, after seeing MMA's top guy get utterly embarrassed, bother with then checking out MMA?
This fight is so good for boxing right now. You think Floyd the only person getting paid from this fight? UFC last 2 biggest stars couldn't keep boxing out of their mouth. I think boxing is strong as ever and you can thank Floyd,Manny,Etc for that. Where were these type of threads when Boxers crossed over to MMA? All we got was a bunch of threads on how mma was so superior to boxing
it adds nothing to Floyd's career, but...
What does it add to Floyds Legacy?

if Floyd shows up, after nearly two years out of the ring, boxes McGregor's ears off, doesn't let McGregor land a glove on him, and then ends of battering McGregor into submission as he tires (McGregor doesn't seem to have the gas to go a hard 25 minutes, let alone the 36 minutes in boxing), he may end up killing off the only bankable star that MMA has at this point.
The quick tap after Nate blasted him on 10 days notice, the edge of his teeth judge's decision in the rematch, and being utterly outclassed and stopped by a 150lbs Floyd Mayweather will kill any casual fan appeal in McGregor as this utter wrecking machine.
With Rousey gone, and McGregor knocked off of his perch, WME is left with a $4b boodoggle with no real way to make any of that money back.
I saw nothing wrong with Brook-GGG or Canelo Khan. Boxing history is full of legit important fights in which a top welterweight fought the middleweight champ and often the welterweight won the fight. Khan only went up 8 pounds not 2 full weight classes. Brook is a huge welterweight who entered the ring weighing more than GGG. If Mayweather treats this fight like his wrestling match with Big Show it won't hurt his image. If Mayweather claims the fight as a win over a pro boxer and says he just broke Marciano's record it will make him look bad.
Floyd has nothing to prove, Floyd's is TBE so no debate of a legacy. It will not hurt either sport in fact it will bring more attention. It is only for entertainment and I don't mind seeing lucky charms get beat to a pulp then walking off his gold...lol
This helps MMA too. Although McGregor is going to get schooled and probably stopped, it's not his sport and it will still have MMA in the spotlight for weeks.
It's an event... nothing more nothing less.
It won't be competitive as a boxing match & McNugget will have absolutely NO chance including a "Punchers chance". It will be a glorified sparing session in which both men will make more money than the careers of 10 star boxers & 100 superstar MMA fighters combined.
Floyd's win won't add as much to his... as it will effect Connor's legacy getting blanked out by a retired 147lbs fighter.
Adds little to his resume other than getting him to 50-0. It does enhance his legacy though for what he's done for boxing. This will absolutely be great for boxing. Millions of potential new fans will watch this fight across the world and see a 40 year old boxer destroy a 27 year old MMA guy in a boxing ring.
It's a circus yes, but this is a great fight for boxing.
