Porter was hyped to the max after his crushing victory over Paulie Malignaggi. No one beat Malignaggi in quite as impressive fashion before or since. But Porter never really lived up to that initial hype, he often seems to fall short at championship level of the sport with losses to both Brook (albeit disputed with one judge giving it a draw), Thurman and even a draw with Julio Diaz - which many thought Porter lost too.
Spence's victory against 42 year old Bundu in his last fight, seemed more likely that father time just caught up with Bundu so he was easy pickings.
So going by a similar benchmark, Spence beat Algieri like neither Pacquiao or Khan could, but just like when Porter crushed Malignaggi and created a whirlwind of hype off the back of that victory, is Spence destined to be a similar type of hype job?
i don't think Spence is a hypejob
however he is being moved along quickly, maybe a tad green
Brook at this stage in his career was having trilogies with cab drivers such as Ernie Smith (god rest his soul)
People may ask who is Ernie Smith....ES was a lad who fought 161 bouts, had a 1% KO ratio, and lost 142 fights and won only 13
Brook fought this fella 3 times...
People wonder why Brook isnt praised enough, its because he took the easy route for most of is career, while others took on dangerous fights over and over
LMAOOOOOO This can't be ****ing true, I'm in freaking tears! I have to go to boxrec.
Edit: LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Brook fought Ernie Smith two times in a row. By the second time he fought him Smith had lost 12 Fucking Times Since their last bout!
I'm not so sure Shawn was just "hype". He has very close fights with two of the top WWs today. In fact, it wouldn't have been outrageous for the judges to have given him a W over Thurman. He, for the most part, dominated Broner.
Is all that supposed to be viewed as some kind of failure? Boxing fans cry about the emphasis put on the '0', but they dismiss a top guy like Porter...
Brook should be given full credit if he beats Spence
Yes resume wise Spence is not good as Porter, but regardless, beating a hyped up prospect is deserving of respect.
I give credit where credit it due
How is giving the 2 highest regarded 147lb fighters tough fights make you a hype job? Porter is a good fighter who lacks some attributes to get him past the top dogs in the division. Broner is the definition of a hype job. Beats on bums with a huge size advantage then steps up and gets embarrassed by guys that are considered on his level.
yeah similar scenarios. just like with porter, when people talk about brook beating spence they will say spence wasnt that good in the first place, and that they never hyped him. theres a few posters on here who like to do that, rewrite history. had them saying lacy wasnt hyped not that long ago and then i bumped the calzaghe v lacy predictions thread....
after malinaggi, porter has lost to brook, thurman, and had to get off the mat to beat broner. i think he loses to berto.
porter IS overrated.
We will find out on May 27th. The good thing is we don't have to wait until Spence is 35 years old to fight the best in his divisionTry for once in your GGG hating life to be even a little bit fair to him. First he hasn't even turned 35 yet. 34 isn't 35. GGG turned pro at an older age than most boxers do. He has been trying to fight the best middleweights in the world for many years now. Martinez, Cotto, Eubank, Saunders and Canelo all refused to fight him in years past. He can't force them to fight if they don't want to fight. He has fought and defeated Lemieux and Jacobs. Two reigning world champions who were willing to fight him. His next fight is with Saunders, yet another world middleweight champion. Very few boxers fighting today have fought 3 world champions in their weight class.
its the go to brit line. first is "remember jeff lacy!" then its "spence is a hype job like russel broner and porter"

He was hyped quite a bit in fairness. Not massively, but abit. Especially after he knocked out Pauli.
Some people on here were saying he would beat Mayweather.
Not really. I was never hyped about Porter cuz he is just a crude slugger. No skills sht technique. I knew Brook would beat him.
Spence isnt some crude slugger like Porter. He is a boxer pucher with way more dimensions to his game..
Only question is if he has the mental toughness and iq.
I pay no attention to hype or what others say about a boxer, good or bad. I was an amateur boxer and I have loved boxing for many decades.I just go by what I see of that boxer and trust my own judgement. My eyes tell me Spence is the best welterweight fighting today. He has great hand speed, boxing skills punching accuracy and power with both hands. He is a vicious body puncher and his chin and stamina seem good. He will beat Brook by KO or win by many points. If he fails to do this then I overrated Spence. It will be my mistake and not due to any hype.

I understand. When you have a boxing legacy as rich and successful as the USA, you want to celebrate every time a fighter from your country gets a win. It's kind of a standard for excellence.
But bragging about defeating guys like Porter and Lacy is a bad look. At least reminisce over the wins over great fighters like Calzaghe over Hopkins.
my fav line was when floyd sr said "i aint seen that man throw a straight punch yet" talking about porter :lol1:
Sr is spot on :lol1:
I like Porter, he seems like a humble guy and he's not scared to fight anyone.
But as far as a boxer, i don't rate him particularly high. I'm not a fan of the bulldozer style.
I was watching Spence fight on YT the other day, there is no way anyone can compare his style to Porter...
Spence shows his ring IQ, there is a method behind the madness
He throws some beautifully timed shots, but we still don't know if he can take a shot and Brook has the power to hurt you....
and in terms of Porter, i never understood the hype, he's a good athlete when matched up right.
But as a boxer, he is very poor, if you can handle his size and pressure, then you can beat him...
The guy throws punches for the sake of throwing punches, there is no rhythm to his work, i think Berto might beat him

Lol. Who was hyping Shawn Porter tho? He lost to Julio Diaz. Damn y'all got some low expectations.
Anyways I have nothing negative to say about Brook or Spence. They knocked out a deal and gave me a fight I want to see.

I like Spence confidence, thats what has impressed me the most.
Brook looked a little rattled at the presser
Its still a 50/50 fight, but i think i will make my pick on the day of the weigh in, i want to see how Brook looks on those scales....
So far Spence is showing the confidence, he has the size, and has shown he can finish opponents in style.
However these opponents were coming off losses, so one has to wonder if they were washed up
Spence seems like he thrives off the hate, i hope he has been studying Brook, i read he is sparring with the Charlo's, i dont see how this will prepare him for Brook.
One thing you don't do is underestimate Brook.
I can't wait for this fight, great matchup.
