I think Jacobs has been overlooked, underrated by the fact that he was stopped by Pirog as a young prospect.
But Danny was leading the fight on the cards 39-37 when Pirog stopped him in the 5th round.
Danny has a bad habit of not being responsible defensively for the full fight, so he paid his bills vs Pirog.
Jacobs has great boxing abilities and has never been CLEARLY outboxed in a ring as a pro.
GGG barely outboxed him, with a KD point as an help to get the decision.
Jacobs best performances as a MW:
- He stopped Quillin (MW world champ) in one round, pretty much impressive.
- He stopped twice Mora (SWW world champ), underrated perfomances.
Tricky Mora never had been stopped, was a very good SWW who actually managed to get a draw with Mosley and beat Forrest for the WBC belt.
-He fought a "could have gone either" with GGG world champion as an amateur and unified MW champion as a pro.
I think the Golden child reached his prime and I rate DJ as a A- middleweight.
I favor him over any 160 pounders in the world.
I would also favor him over De Gale if he avoids the english mate bigger shots.
How do you guys rate DJ?
I definetly rate him higher after Saturday than I did before. I never thought he was a bum but I thought he was a clear step below GGG and Canelo in the division but now I see he's right there with them at the top. He showed how versatile his game is and came up just short on my card but I would love to see it again. I think if he fought the same way against Canelo he would win, but if he could replicate that great performance again would be the question. I hope Danny gets to fight both guys in at least the next 2 years.
Everyone gets tired chasing guys around the ring.
Theres "movers who are boxing" then theres "runners that are running" Jacobs did some of both just like most boxers these days. No one has taught these guys how to stay close and negate offense. No one knows how to step in and combinate then grab and "walk off" let them go as the ref comes to separate and leave the guy with your jab!!!
Theres some of the "stuff" the greats used to pull off and you don't see that way to eat up time. Today they run!
Not everyone can stay on the outside like Ali and neutralize
an opponent with a jab, you need more but running doesn't get it done. 25% of running is still to much, trainers today are from the late 80's and they have no clue how to teach more than one way to box. Thats life!

Ray, I think Quillin was B, Mora is B too.............
I should have rated GGG a A- because a B rating from me is a high mark! I don't rate fighters using their common opponents or any opponents without first evaluating the talent they've shown over at least 6 years as a pro.
There are C+ guys I like and are tough opponents too.
Everyone needs to consider the "current era" and the over all history of the sport. Mayweather was the best of this era in the history of the sport I don't rate him high as a welter at all. He only had 13 bouts!
He didn't fight a draw with GGG, he got out point and he was hurt twice in the bout. He moved away 75% of the bout and sorry thats not winning. A lot of young fans think thats the way to win against the champ but it isn't!
This "fighting off the back foot" is BS when it comes to "taking the title"! Jacobs isn't Mayweather or Benitez and he only engaged with GGG when GGG let off the gas.
I rated Danny second in the world that IS high praise but think he fought a draw he did NOT!
Ray
I thought GGG won, he clearly outlanded Jacobs in at least 6 rounds, the KD makes it a clear victory IMO, but, we can't ignore the fact that a lot of people/observers thought GGG lost.
I don't think I am the owner of the truth even if I had a couple of amateur fights wich probably allows me to understand a bit more fighters (I have that stress and butterflies in the chest when I watch a fight even by streaming that only a person who ever did step in a ring can have).
I thought GGG showed he's gonna be hard to beat, because he solved a big problem in Jacobs.
Jacobs had the tools to worry GGG:
- Southpaw stance
- A speed
- Solid power
- Footwork
Canelo will bring power and inside game, speed, but his poor footwork and lil size will make a sitting duck wich can be allowed vs triple.
I think GGG being tired allowed Jacobs to come back in the fight, GGG struggles when he passes the 6th round.
While being methodical, GGG waste a lot of energy.
Ray, I think Quillin was B, Mora is B too.............

Among all the chatter(sh1t) on this forum for the past few days, I'm glad someone created a thread to give credit to Danny.. He proved more in the fight than Gennady & surely proved he is a solid fighter.. I never underrated Danny but never rated him at the level I do now because he had not shown it in his past fights or it could be because the opposition were not demanding it..
People try to read too much into a loss, a loss is not a blemish but s stepping stone for young fighters.. I thought Danny would get KO'ed because of the collective body punches by the 10th round, but Danny has got awesome hand speed & the fact that he kept escaping whilst GGG was cutting off the ring shows that he has a good ring presence too..
Even if Danny moves to 168, he can probably win a belt against the current lot.. Something that he should consider in a few yrs..
Good boxing pedigree, good athlete, decent speed, and very respectable power. He is a world level guy for sure.
But I wouldn't get carried away either. The quality of the middleweight division is so-so, that's been the question mark over Golovkin. And for Golovkin himself, Saturday night showed that a traditional weakness of the Soviet Bloc fighters seems to apply to him also, i.e. he struggles with exchanges in the pocket.
Danny's success was mainly in those pocket exchanges where he stepped in, flurried, and stepped out. On the outside Danny was no more than ok. He moved well considering that Golovkin is an excellent stalker, but he wasn't landing many clean shots from range.
Again, he's obviously a good fighter. Going life and death with another world class fighter in Golovkin proves that. But beyond that it's hard to say too much. There just isn't a lot of top notch competition out there for either man to fully prove themselves.
Charlo is moving up, he will be the eye test.
Canelo too, but I think Canelo is too short.
Even GGG look tall next to him.
So unless Canelo bring up some Tysonesk power and speed at 160 I don't see him beating those bigger guys down.
If you have power and have stoppages early in your career you must think that your power will rule as you step up in competition. However that assumption isn't valid most times. Jacobs is a boxer first not a fighter.
Even GGG becomes a boxer as he moves up to more accomplished talents.
In boxings current tiers of skill levels and accomplishments I'd rate Danny as a solid B who can improve.
I rate GGG as a solid A because he can box and fight and adjust however he does not fight well inside and that could be a factor in regarding a more complete dimensional talent.
I do think Danny is the second best behind GGG and Danny could improve.

Ray, I think Quillin was B, Mora is B too.
Danny steam rolled both of them without a scratch except a flash KD in the first Mora event.
You gonna bring me up that Mora lost to Vera, but I thought he won the rematch and he beat Forrest for the WBC SWW title, drew with Mosley in 2010. So I wouldn't call him a C fighter, even at 160.
So I would rank Danny over B, especially since he fought a "draw" with GGG that you're ranking just like me as a A fighter.
Let's be fair to Danny.
Good thread, its nice to see Jacobs actually get some praise. I didn't give him much of a chance before the fight, pretty fast and heavy handed, good technically (threw some nice combinations) but does seem to switch of a little at times and doesn't have the best head movement (GGG was finding him constantly with his jab).
GGG aside I dont see anyone really giving him any trouble at 160 at least at the moment. I would favor Jacobs over the likes of Canelo, lemieux, Saunders etc. Worthy of his place as the second best fighter at 160.
Thanks bro.
Well, Danny and GGG gave us one of the best middleweight fight for a while.
The best one since Pavlik vs JT 1 or even better (that fight was damn good) so almost 10 years.
But the Danny vs GGG fight displayed a higher level of boxing tactics IMO.
Danny's problem is his focus and his defense, he should not allow a shorter man to jab his teeth at will.
Charlo big bro is coming in town too.
I wish we could witness fights and rematches btw those 3 guys, Jermall, GGG, Danny.
Kinda like Frazier, Ali, Foreman...
Don't know if Nelo would like to join the mix.
Oscar testing him against big fellas in Chavez.
... I don't know what to say...
Anyway, Jacobs seems to look like a top dog at 160, 168...
And I even dare say that Jacobs would be a good match up to Ward at 175...
I agree with this. Jacobs would be a good match up for Ward at 175. He has no trouble making the weight and his style might give Ward some problems.
Jacobs is better than I thought he was before Saturday night. I watched a few of his fights prior to Saturday night but I still didn't expect him to perform as well as he did. He has good attributes but he also has a high boxing IQ. You have to give it up to him the way he stepped up his game on Saturday.
If you have power and have stoppages early in your career you must think that your power will rule as you step up in competition. However that assumption isn't valid most times. Jacobs is a boxer first not a fighter.

Oh there they go. There they go, every time I start talkin 'bout Jacobs, a white man got to pull Pirog out their ass. That's their one, that's their one. Pirog. Pirog. Let me tell you something once and for all. Pirog was good, but compared to Jacobs, Pirog ain't ****.
I wonder when Ward finally fights a slick black fighter?! I think we all agree Jacobs would box Ward's ears off.
Ouch, someone's upset that Ward beat up his favorite fighter.
Tremendous fighter and I said that before Saturday night.
You also stated that he had virtually no chance to win this fight and that he'd get absolutely destroyed.
Idiot. :lol1:
I'd fancy his chances against any MW in the world, including a GGG rematch. I think his size and length is a problem for anyone in the division.
And the speed, dude is really fast for a guy of this size.
