I don't really know who to put at #1 p4p.
Here are some candidates:
Chocolatito - I thought he won 115-111. That being said, its not completely ludicrous to say the Thai won the fight. Lots of close rounds. And it was not a great performance by Choco.
If a decision is bad enough (like Kova-Ward), I ignore the official and wrong result and go forward with my determination of the fight for p4p & ranking purposes.
But if a fight is close enough that it could have gone either way, I accept the official decision, even if my decision differs.
This fight I think is a bad decision, not a "could have gone either way" fight.
Ward - I cant see putting Ward as #1, seeing as he got a gift decision. I've been ranking him as 2a (with Kova as 2b). He did perform well against the best fighter in a 2nd division.
Kova - Ive been ranking him as 2b, bc I believe he beat Ward, who is an excellent fighter. Note that Kova has done all his work in one division.
GGG - I had GGG edging the fight based on the KD (114-113). So he won against his best opponent. But if the judges gave it to Jacobs close, I would have accepted that result. Many close rounds. GGG also stopped looking like he was a class above. I cant see having GGG as #1 based on that performance. Hell, if the dudes behind him (Bud, Loma, Pac, etc) impress, they can overtake him
I don't thing that dudes like Bud, Loma have done enough to be #1. Pac is a possibility, but Vargas & Bradley don't remove how bad he looked v Money, and he is on the downside of his career.
Since I do think it was a bad decision, I may just retain Choco as p4p #1, but it doesn't look right given the official decision.
And Choco is vulnerable at 115, he give up a lot of size and he hit the Thai w/ EVERYTHING to no effect.
Honestly, the top of the p4p list is a mess based on bad decisions and GGG not exactly putting to rest claims that he's more hype than substance.
Good question. Wouldn't have thought so before the weekend but there's a good argument to be made for Lomachenko now.
Think I would lean towards Ward myself. But he needs to commit to that Kovalev rematch.
I don't follow this reasoning. Ward has never put anyone away, including Kova. So he can never be p4p #1 bc he doesn't KO anybody?
Plus, Kova, in addition to being a KO puncher, is an effective boxer. He doesn't need to KO somebody to win (see Hopkins & Ward).
I decided I have Kova & Ward as 1a & 1b on the p4p list.
I was thinking that when he had Ward hurt he should have finished him. To me that moved him down in the PP list. It was the most important fight of his career. Right or wrong that was my thinking.
I went back on YouTube and watched the fight again after I posted initially. Someone shot the footage from inside the arena no announcers or replays. Ward didn't appear to be hurt as bad as I remembered. The official fight footage showed the knockdown several times. Must have effected my memory of the fight...
amir king khan. king at 140, 147, and would have been king at 154 if he fought there. moved up to middle and was shooling the champ before gettin caught but if not for the weight he wins easily. thats the definition of p4p
I think Chocalatito got robbed so if he was #1 prior to the fight, he deserves to be now. That said, he gets hit way too much for my liking, I think overall Lomachenko is the best fighter in the world P4P but it's too early for him to be placed there. It's gotta be Ward or Kovalev now I guess, I had Kovalev by 1 point in that fight and they're both elite fighters who fought each other.
I've had Kovalev as number one since Pac's retirement after the bradley fight so he still remains as my number one.
I think RG won and did so well so no reason for me to change that. GGG stays in at 3.
Not really a mess tbh.
I just put Crawford at no.1 because he's the guy who hasn't either lost, got an (alleged) gift decision, or seemed really vulnerable lately.
I do think Lomachenko is the best in the world, but I cant call a guy who's fought 10 times and lost a fight the P4P king.
Ward, Kovalev, Chocolatito, GGG all have either lost or gotten (alleged) gift decisions in the past few months.
I give it to Loma. The guy is a step above everyone in terms of skill and talent. His resume still needs some work, but his performances push him ahead of the rest. One of the best talents boxing has ever seen.
I have Ward at 2. The guy has a body of work. I had him losing to Kovalev, but to move up to fight him and make a case for a victory is pretty damn impressive.
Kovalev at 3. Also accumulating an impressive resume. I thought he deserved the nod against Ward, but I can't really justify putting him ahead all things considered. If he won cleanly I'd have him at 1 or 2.
I'll put GGG at 4. Not coming off his most impressive performance, but he did get the nod against a dangerous, hungry, legit middle who came in as a cruiserweight. His resume lacks big names, but a lot of good B fighters who he destroyed consistently.
Gonzalez at 5. In terms of talent and skills I have him only behind Loma. His loss was a close one and he finished strong, but the guy he lost to was not considered a real threat. Realistically he belongs ahead of GGG but the loss sets him back for now.
Canelo at 6. Canelo has a lot of good victories. In terms of resume I could see him higher. I just don't find him impressive at the highest level. I might be penalizing him for his embarrassing performance against Floyd. No shame in losing to Floyd, but he looked like a fool in the fight. He has had some really close fights with B+ guys like Lara and Trout.
I don't really care to sort the rest.
The man who has never lost, SOG Ward, clearly #1.
Don't know how people can put a guy that lost to Salido ahead of him lmao, I remember when Russell was nicknamed "TBA" on here, after Loma fought him he was suddenly a top fighter in the sport lmao
Kovalev to me is out because he didn't put Ward away when he had the chance.
I don't follow this reasoning. Ward has never put anyone away, including Kova. So he can never be p4p #1 bc he doesn't KO anybody?

I decided I have Kova & Ward as 1a & 1b on the p4p list.
I think it should be Ward. I thought he lost the Kov fight but its a win on his resume. Top 3 fighters are Ward Kov and Loma. Loma is just missing a grear win to take the spot.
For me, its Ward
