How good was he really? He has a couple of losses to no-name fighters.
I see him as a slow, no-defense having plodder. If he was good, he wouldn't have had to resort to loading his gloves.
At his best Margarito was the best conditioned pressure fighter in the last 25 years easily. His constant pressure & 1000 punches per fight was what made the "Tijuana Tornado" a fighter 147lbs didn't want to fight during his prime.
The loaded gloves bull****... was clearly a fuggin' way to try and rebuild Miguel Cotto.
If his GLOVES were loaded why the fugg wasn't he banned for life like that Puerto Rican fighter Luis Retso. Why wasn't Tony banned??I agree. There has never been any proof at all that his gloves were loaded when he KOed Cotto, only assumptions. If he was wearing cement bricks when he fought Cotto how could he land so many clean flush bombs to Cotto's head and jaw and never knock him down? Pacquiao had no problem knocking Cotto down without loaded gloves. Right after his Cotto win Margarito took off his boxing gloves and was hugging people and shaking hands. That isn't something a guy with loaded gloves would likely do.
Are you asking a question or just making a statement? It sounds like you have already decided he was no good and wanted to start a thread trashing him one more time.

For a plodding power puncher with no defense, quite good. I don't see many guys like that, outside of the larger weight classes, who can get to the upper-levels. He had pretty sharp instinct and offensive timing to be able to be able to get where he got. He was otherwise pretty limited though.
He was so dominant in the second half of the Cotto fight and then got destroyed by Mosley for 9 rounds like months after the Cotto performance. Biggest turn around in boxing. Good fights with Williams, Cotto, Cintron, Clottey, then gets manhandled by Mosley on the same night he was caught loading his gloves..idk, sounds fishy to say the least.

With or without the wraps?
Loaded gloves aside, he was a brutal-leave-it-all-in-the-ring fighter and good to watch. Don't care what anyone says, but the Cotto rematch was a foregone conclusion...he just wasn't there mentally, the gloves incident was like an itch that slowly eroded his heart and desire to win.

He wasn't very good. He was slow, plodding, and threw slow looping punches. The lack of concussive impact on many of the punches in the first Cotto fight, that still put a serious hurt on Cotto, suggests he had something hard in his wraps for that fight as well. Cotto was reacting oddly for such light looking, non-concussive shots to be landing. Also way back in the Lujan fight, when Lujan's ear started getting sheared off. Likely something hard was in the wraps. An ear doesn't get sheared off like that from getting hit with boxing gloves on, unless there is something hard between the knuckle, and the padding of the glove.
He had almost no skill, he had stamina and a good chin but after the loaded gloves scandal he had no power at all
He loaded his gloves I wouldn't put it past him to juice too. A pathetic cheating lying b*tch is all he is. Power and stamina probably fraudulent
Very good at what he did. Excellent stamina, good chin & lots of heart. His technique was pretty basic though and he was a bit of a one-trick pony.
This idea that some fans have that he'd have given Mayweather his hardest fight is bizarre to me. He was far, far too slow (not to mention crude) to even get near to Mayweather. Back when Margarito was in his prime, Mayweather was closer to his prime too. Margarito's pressure just wasn't educated enough for that level of fighter.
Then there was the loaded gloves. We'll never know if he fought his whole career with a massive & illegal advantage. I just hope none of his opponents are suffering since - if he did use loaded wraps more than just the time he was caught.

He had a good chin but most Mexicans do and good stamina...other than that he was a punching-bag, too easy to hit and was too big for his weight class.
His stamina was impressive, as well as his chin, the loaded gloves are going to follow him forever.
He had stamina and a chin, but that's about all he had going for him.

Absolutely - he is the definition of tainted. It's a shame, he should have been remembered as a warrior - instead, he deserves to be remembered as a dirty cheat, and nothing else.
