Could someone explain to me how Spence isn't the 'Great Black Hope' at welterweight?
A lot of posters on here assume he beats Brook, some have gone on to say he's the uncrowned king of the division. All for beating Bundu and Algieri.
It seems to be that Garcia/Thurman is a good showpiece fight for the PBC, but Spence is the true 'Great Black Hope'.
The simple answer is that there's too much viable top talent in the welterweight division (and in boxing in general) for all of the energy of the black community to be put behind one fighter.
The closest thing to a "Great Black Hope", if such a thing ever existed, would've been the rise of the Williams sisters in tennis (or Tiger Woods when he was just coming along)
You are full fledged short bus delusional. Springs together a few wins??w could ou believe that? He landed so many more power shots on diaz in Both fights, knocked him down like 8 times. He beat aldo who hadn't lost in ten years, jumped up 2 weight classes over night to fight Diaz. Then moves down and beat the living **** out of Alvarez. O yeah, and no one has done that in history. And fool, GUFTSASSON BEAT JONES ASS? REMEMBER???And also just remember, Holly holm is whiter than rousey. Do you even try man? Rousey had a great streak going, then she fought boxers, it happens. Stop watching CNN and victimizing yourself
On ten days notice and without much of a camp, Diaz took McGregor's onslaught, came out in the 2nd round, Stockton Slapped the **** out of McGregor, caught with a clean 1-2 down the center, and knocked McGregor for such a loop that he forgot he couldn't even wrestle all that well. Even in the 2nd fight, once McGregor blew his wad, he had to literally turn tail and run when Diaz was coming.
Jon Jones had a hell of a fight with Gustafsson, with both men getting worn out, but Jones still walked away with the victory, making the seventh defense of his world title, continuing on with a career that should've had him undefeated.
Keep writing if you want; the more you do, the stupider you look.
No. Look at Joe Smith Jr. They can make a movie about his story but the media hasn't gotten behind him.
The DNC controlled media is always looking for a "minority" to cover and over rate. Joe smith is being completely ignored
I believe the "Great White Hope" was specifically referring to the heavyweight division.
I think the Klitschko domination, has change those perceptions!
the irony of a boxing fan saying ''even though no one cares about a fighter's race'' and says a few ''pitiful blacks''
There's no irony there. I was describing the race of the people throwing around the term because they have racially motivated reasons for doing so, and I was also describing their emotional state along with it. Has nothing to do with the fighters themselves or why people like/dislike them.
Anytime a white boxer comes onto the scene and starts making some noise, you're gonna always have a few pitiful blacks whining about "the great white hope", even though no one cares about a fighter's race in this day and age except them.
Kelly pavlik could've accomplished a lot more if he wasn't a head case.....dude was a good fighter and my fav middleweight after Hopkins era
Kelly Pavlik could've accomplished alot more if he didn't hit that bottle harder than he did Jermaine Taylor .

I think that the GWH thing started a long time ago. At the times that black people were beginning to be allowed a fair chance to compete, there was still a lot of resistance to this happening.
When they started to win, and win often, this resistance was antagonised. When the won titles and became champions in marquee sports I think it got even worse. That's probably about the peak of when people were looking for the GWH.
I don't think that the Klit brothers turned this around by fulfilling the need for a GWH, although that might have been what finally put it to rest.
I think that slowly, over decades, resistances changed. By the 90's when Tyson was busting everyone up, I think people had grown used to (and in many cases grown up with) black people dominating the heavyweight division. People liked fighters for their ability, how exciting they were, or whether they seemed likable and charismatic - I think the colour of the fighter probably had very little to do with it by that stage.
-Conor McGregor shows up (after already being beaten twice), strings together a couple wins, talks ****, and is launched into the stratosphere (to the point that folks seeing him get demolished does nothing to his drawing power).
-Ronda Rousey, riding her Olympic-level Judo and that armbar (against a field of women who weren't really ready for her skills) all the way up to being arguably the biggest attraction in the UFC and getting women a seat at the table. She gets destroyed by Holly Holm, gets destroyed by Amanda Nunes, disappears for a bit, and the interest in seeing women fight MMA sharply dissipates.
-Jon "Bones" Jones is 22-1 (basically 23-0, as that Hammil decision was nonsense), is arguably the best p4p fighter in all of the UFC, and has never really come all that close to being that top attraction.

white americans are not poor enough to go into boxing, they'll choose MMA every single time if they have an option to join a combat sport.
Boxing is very demographically bias, unfortunately
Ever since the Klitschko brothers started dominating the heavyweight division there hasn't been a need for "The Great White Hope". In the last 15 to 20 years there have been so many top level white fighters that people who want to see a white fighter succeed have multiple guys to choose from.
When the Klitchkos were dominating I'm sure it seemed to many people that some people were searching for "The Great Black Hope" too. The same way you see white racists on this forum who only have bad things to say about black fighters, you also have just as many black people saying the same thing about white fighters. Seems to me that both sides are equally at fault....,which goes to show...we're all the same regardless of race - We all have the capacity to be petty, envious, small minded and hateful.
Whilst one can never be certain about the intentions of starting a race orientated thread, it appears OP just wants to talk about the subject.
Does everyone know HOW BIG the abuse of children by priests has turned out to be? It was fkn HUGE!!!
How did they get away with it for so long?
Nobody wanted to talk about it. It was swept under the carpet.
If this thread helps us talk, learn and understand some reasons behind the black/white social divide, then let's talk!
The defining spirit or mood of a particular period of history is shown by the ideas and beliefs of that time.
Whilst back then it was thought best to keep quiet about serious issues, we can now move forward, talking openly about these issues. The only people who don't want to talk about them are the insecure people. They would prefer to shut up and pretend it isn't/wasn't a problem...kind of like the priests hey!
The interval between the decay of the old and the formation and establishment of the new constitutes a period of transition which must always necessarily be one of uncertainty, confusion, error, and wild and fierce fanaticism.

Weeeelll.... jones got as much positive media as the ufc's popularity allowed prior to him doin all the stupid ****.
Sporting achievements aside.. ronda and conor dont sniff coke, run over pregnant women then run off and on the eve of redemption...pissing it all into the wind by pissing dirty.
I remember bones jones gettin some very positive media for a time peroid that ufc wasnt anywhere near as big as now.
Also... arguably the biggest star at the time and prior.. all before he pissed dirty? Anderson silva. Did he get negative press or wasnt built up by ufc..
Bro I never referred to Jones
IMO the media made rousey and McGregor beacons of hope to finally see may weather lose, regardless of how ridiculous the thought of fighting a woman is
The media was buzzing over the prospect just like they are over McGregor... Who is arrogant, flashes money talks trash b does all the things some fans n media claim was the reason they disliked mayweathwr
Thats the double standards I'm speaking off
Understand now?
so that's why I asked and raised the questions in the first place
the media push certain athletes...praise some, vilify others
but to not recognize certain double standards by media and fans means either people are in denial or blind.

I wasn't speaking in reference to Jones not being a huge star
I was speaking in reference to the meteoric rise of mcgergor and rousey(who beat, how many fighters
).....hell mayweather had hall of fame credentials 10 years ago and was being called a coward, ducker, never fought no one but look at these two...beat less than half the amount of people he had and were media darlings lol.....rousey best fighter of the year ESPY the same year mayweather beat Pac? come on bro
who got fighter of the year in 2015? if manny beat mayweather people would've said he is the GOAT lol...
even saying a woman could beat Floyd mayweather in a boxing match....or McGregor....a talented fighter but he mimicks the money persona, gets praised for it, and people actually think this guy can beat mayweather in a boxing ring......kinda odd
Yeah that i agree with tbf. All fair points. Good post.
I wonder if the cocaine abuse..testing positive for peds twice and running down a pregnant woman before fleeing the scene had anything to do with his image and marketability rather than his skin colour.
Or the fact MMA without a doubt wasnt as popular globally when he first beat cormier not did it market its fighters like it does today.. with no colour exceptions.
Guess we'll never knooowwww
