Hi, was watching this fight before, Kimbo's beard is very bushy and long. I know Danny Williams fought with a beard but it was trim, but does a beard like the one Kimbo has in the video help with punches to the chin?
The beard absorbs some of the shock of the force when a punch lands, but probably not by much. It might help, but very little, I'd imagine.
Think of it when amateur boxers wear headgear, or sparring in a ring. You wear headgear to help absorb some of the shock of each punch.
A beard shouldn't help. It's the concussive force of the punch that forces the brain to hit the inside of the skull. It's kind of like asking will water protect a submarine from a depth charge. Nope.
A beard won't help.
Makes you look like a hipster.
Subconsciously even the judges would be dying to see the bearded chin smashed.
A massive beard does obstruct the jaw line though. I always think that it would be more difficult to do a jaw thrust and maintain/open someone's airway if they were badly knocked out and were snoring.
lol No.
If a punch has any kind of force or velocity to it at all, a f'n beard isn't gonna stop it from effecting you unlss you're beard is as thick as a lion's mane or something.
Not at all lol. The beard hair is actually very soft and makes no difference.
It looks like you and I are the only ones in this thread who have ever grown a beard. The OP's question is hilarious!
I can't speak from experience since I've never grown a beard but I would assume it does but just slightly.
I can tell from lots that a lot of the guys here haven't grown beards from their replies. If they had ever had a beard in their life they would know that it can't protect your chin from any impact. That like asking, "Does a guy with a full head of hair have more protection from concussive punches to the head than a bald guy...It's ridiculous.
A big thick beard probably does soften punches a tiny amount. It's probably doesn't make enough difference to worry about. If the beard is too heavy the boxer is made to shave it anyway.
