Team GB Olympic Heavyweight (Cruiser in the pros). Could make a good pro but he is raw like AJ was when he turned over. Maybe more talented than AJ, but in a tougher division. Lost to Erislandy Savon before the medals at the Olympics, but then so should have Joshua lol
2017 is here and the shift is coming. Can Lawrence Okolie's exciting style, raw talent and… https://t.co/Mok2XCk3yB
The GB team was kinda disappointing considering their success at London 2012 and that they were the biggest team in Rio, but the success in Rio had much to do with the local verdicts.
While Okolie and Joyce are good, Buatsi is the one to see, he is the only fighter in the Rio games that scored two stoppages and he almost made it three.
They had some tough draws iirc, and i think our team was more quantity than quality. Quite a few of our lads went out to top nations early on.
AIBA – European Olympic Qualifier Event... by aiba
Good session here feat. a few team GB fighters including Okolie, Buatsi and Joyce.
Great performances from Joyce and Okolie, while Buatsi went to war with a very tough Ukrainian (won 3-0, but i thought Ukr was unlucky not get at least a round)
Okolie showed what he is about in this bout. Flashes of big talent but also very raw and open at times as well. He really hurt the Azeri a few times though with right hand counters.
Joyce battered the Hungarian from bell to bell and got the stoppage late on.
and I've also read Yoka saying he wants to follow in Joshua's footsteps and be a pro champ (wouldn't it be a coup if a British promoter managed to nab him too?)
Yeah good luck with that. Joshua is an exceptional athlete and a natural-born fighter. Yoka looks like a tall guy with a suspect chin who started boxing two or three years ago. Joshua's olympic gold medal is controversial but Yoka's is flat out fraudulent.
Terrible decision if true imo.
I dont see him getting much more from the am game, he already has WSB experience, and hes in a great negotiating position with Matchroom and Warren both having good financial backing.
Time isnt on his side like it is with other amateurs.
Maybe he is just cosy in team GB set up. But he could make some big money in the pros even if he doesnt make the top
It's Britain versus France in the WSB on the 24th of February so perhaps we'll see a rematch between him and Yoka, who also seems to be delaying on turning pro?
I just found this article which seems to indicate that Joyce will definitely be turning pro sometime this year though - http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/boxing/joe-joyce-plots-busy-2017-9436194 - and I've also read Yoka saying he wants to follow in Joshua's footsteps and be a pro champ (wouldn't it be a coup if a British promoter managed to nab him too?)
I read that he will be participating in the upcoming season of World Series Boxing

His style isn't pretty and I think he may actually be slowing down already (possibly due to weight gain?) but he's a really effective pressure fighter. He has a better claim to be an Olympic gold medalist than Anthony Joshua when you think about it
I didnt see any of the 2012 Olympics so i wouldnt know about that but i thought even though it looked like he was outworking Tony Yoka, most of it was flurrying on arms and gloves, Yoka was landing the cleaner shot's imo.
Joe joyce is basically issac frost but with -30 skill points :lol1:
In terms of star potential and raw ability he is the diamond in the rough for sure.
Has to improve obviously, but that power looks legit, and he has the timing and accuracy to deliver it even at the top level of the ams which is a great sign. Hes another like Joyce and Okolie who seems to improved their skills a lot in a short space of time.
Someone on another forum compared his technique to Gerald McClellan. I can definitely see a bit of that in how he delivers his punches even if he isnt on that level
He's got the ideal pro style, fans are gonna love him. The power is sickening but it's his temperament, accuracy and punch selection that impresses me the most. If these boys at 175 stay around for long enough, they're gonna be in big trouble.
does anyone else think joe joyce is not remotely talented or is it just me? :lol1:

I like him, he got slaughtered by Savon in WSB then just a few months later gave him a really good fight in the Olympics so I think he's a fast learner. And he seems like a good lad too so I hope he does well. Along with Buatsi and Joyce I think he has the most star potential out of the 2016 Olympians (although I think McCormack and Yafai are the best)
Yeah i watched that Savon bout yesterday. He really got battered. But he was taking nothing off the shots due to his rawness and poor defence (similar to AJ vs Nistor) and because of that i dont think we can question his chin just yet.
He must be pretty tall too because he wasnt that shorter than Savon who is a big big200lber
Depends how you define talent. He isnt quick and a fluid puncher, but his stamina, strength, chin and toughness are great. If he can carry those attributes over to the pro game then he will be exciting if nothing else.
Personally i would expect him to reach at least Euro level
AJ is pretty stiff and flat footed but joe joyce makes him look like Ali in comparison :lol1:
To be fair being a stiff robot can get you pretty far, so a European title wouldn't surprise me :thinkerg:

Good stuff. He's definitely got more learning to do but he's clearly talented.
Buatsi is the one I really want to see turn pro though, I think he's gonna rip up the pro game.

hoping joe joyce turns pro soon. One of the most talented amateurs ive seen for a long long time in that division

NEETzsche what do you reckon to him?
I think he will be very good as a pro.

Looked a touch raw in the olympics but still has to be a very good boxer to go to the Olympics, from what I recall he made a good account of himself against Savon who's very difficult to beat.
I think he was a late starter too and had only been boxing for 6 years or so (got into the sport to lose weight), which means there's loads of room for improvement.
Fowler plans on turning this year too apparently, going to have a few WSB fights first I think.
I'm hoping Buatsi turns pro, that's the main guy from team GB I'm keeping an eye on, if you can bang people out in the Olympics you're definitely going to have power in the pros...
should have posted the insta his tweet links to really...
