He did not look bad in this fight and was landing nice combo's..Joe caught him and won..But Hopkins should just have a going away fight in his hometown..Make it a 8 round fight and retire with a win
Berto is a older declined x champion. Joey again...is a young up coming fighter making waves.
big big difference. BHop could have picked a bum. This guy had no bum in him. Or aged. Or any signs of decline.
That's what he attempted to do. He picked him for an easy farewell fight. It's clear as day. It simply backfired.
When Nazim Richardson was asked about this fight he said "I don't know who Joe Smith is. Oscar or John David Jackson could probably beat this kid"
Hopkins went on a 10 minute rant about how he's a "common" fighter.
Hell, I didn't even know who he was until someone told me he's the guy who KO'd Fonfara.
Lol c'mon Larry. I couldnt help but chuckle when i seen the way BHop was moving. He looked very old. Those "baby steps" HBO claimed BHop was being smart for doing was sad.
lol..yea his legs are completely shot

No he shouldn't. This is the trap fighters fall into. I will keep coming back for that good win to go out on top with. Smith was a drop off from kovalev. And whether he won or lost nobody predicted a ko loss let alone one where he got knocked out the ring. What if he fights a worse caliber fighter and gets knocked out or embarrassed again? Or just loses to a scrub cause he's out worked. Boxing is littered with examples of washed up or old fighters taking what everyone thinks is a safe fight to get a win that ends in disaster and they keep chasing that win adding more Ls and embarrassing moments. Not worth it for such a all time great who has money, fame and a post fight career (part owner of a top boxing promotion, a gig calling fights on HBO).
He took a young lion at 52. Ugly retirement fight but he had the balls to get in there. Wouldn't mind if he wanted to go out with a win with a lesser fighter but I don't think that is his nature
He's a no name that was meant to be an easy farewell fight.
No difference except Berto's name is bigger.
Exactly. And berto wanted to fight mayweather, but he losses to Guerrero, and Ortiz.
Not exactly. Berto was a washed up has been that declined before his time. Joey is a up comer young and hungry making waves and a name for himself. Big difference.

I didnt watch the fight until this morning, and he did not look bad at all
You're right, he didn't look bad. In fact he still looks pretty damn good. His downfall was that he ran in to a young, big, powerful guy that knew his only chance of winning was to continually push forward in order to get the win.
Hopkins isn't what he used to be but he would still be a handful for most, if not all of the top light heavyweights. The best way to beat him is to bulldoze through him with high activity, power, strength and stamina.
BHop need to lay low for a bit. Let this **** blow over, then see where it goes from there. I don't want to see him go out like that either, **** was pitiful.
Just retire. He lost his first fight and his last. He was close to getting really hurt this time around. The back of his head slammed against the concrete as he was flying out of the ring. I love Hopkins and it is definitely time to call it. He did it all. :hail:
I dont agree man. Hes 51 years old FFS. The legend needs to retire once and for all. Just for him to be competitive vs a huge uncher at this age is already crazy. Hopkins is a living legend. We got Hopkins, Floyd and Manny. The 3 best of this generation.
yeah pretty much ^ They thought smith was a C level fighter who could masquerade as a decent win cause he sparked out fonfara and they thought it was a fluke (which it might have been). So it would look he beat someone who was a good fighter. However even still smith turned out to be better than they thought and hopkins really was pushing it age wise and it back fired, pretty spectacularly lol
Agree with this post. It's easy in hindsight to view Joe Smith favorably but he was the underdog for a reason.

Yeah it was blatantly supposed to be a farewell fight against an easy opponent.
Or "common" opponent :lol1:
