I've always known it to be a very weak division it's never been stacked with quality and had the big fights like the Welterweights, Middleweigts and other divisions. In my time of watching boxing the one fight that got me excited was Haye vs Maccrinelli unification fight
Cruiserweight limit is 200 pounds so some cruiserweights weight about 215 pounds on fight night. That is as much or more than 90% of the past heavyweight champions weighed in their prime. Marciano 185, Dempsey 188. Louis, 200, Jack Johnson 195, Liston 212, Foreman,215, Ali 206, Frazier 205,Holmes 210, Holyfield 200 etc. The cruiserweight class is an unneeded weight class. When the weight limit was 190 it made some sense for guys who couldn't quite make 175 but didn't want to fight guys who weighed 220 pounds or more. With the weight limit set at 200 pounds cruiserweights are plenty big enough to compete as heavyweights. Every cruiserweight champion moves up to heavyweight where the big money is. That is why this weight class is weak. Amost all the good cruiserweights are fighting as heavyweights because really, they are heavyweights. I disagree, with the size of the current heavyweights, it's definitely a needed division. You can't tell me that guys like Cunningham and Adamek weren't eaten alive at heavy because of sheer size. Usyk is probably one of the most skilled fighters in the world, but he would likely be dominated by guys like Wilder,Joshua,Fury, etc. at heavy.
To answer your question, back when cruiserweight was started with a weight limit of 190 and same day weigh ins it was a good and useful weight class for guys who couldn't quite make 175 but were too light to fight good 215 pound boxers. Holyfield was a terrific fighter at that weight and there were some other very good 190 pounders.

It's good now & has been for the last couple of yrs tbh
This right here. It's a shame it doesnt get as much exposure as some of the other divisions but it's BEEN good.
There can be good fighters, it's just that once people make a name for themselves at CW they immediately move up to get some of dat HW $. It's mostly euros most people have never heard of..
Its a fun ass division. Usyk has a chance to elevate it by doing a little more work and becoming a draw in the USA as well as Europe, and becoming known as one of the best fighters in the world. Some of the young guys look like beasts and some of the older guys like Lebedev havent really declined at all.
The problem for the fans in the states is being able to watch these fights on tv instead of on youtube.
There's a reason why the cruiserweight division is ignored. Nobody cares about it. Not my fault, there's some good scraps that have happened in the past. Not recently though.
Lol? it's prolly the best division at this moment in time.
you one of the greatest boxers on the planet right now in:
Usyk
then you got:
Lebedev
Gassiev
Glowacki
The unbeaten cuban killer Dorticos
Mikki Nelson
Bredis
Hunter
Tabiti
Drozd
Then you got some of the old timers who are still killers hanging around:
Kudryashov is still a scary mofo
Huck still got some big fights in him
Chakhiev is done but can still bang out anyone
Bellew and Cunningham in the mix
are you kidding me? it's the most stacked divsion in boxing :boxing:
Bellew is a better CW than he was LHW that's for sure.
Huck only got level with the record due too hometown cooking he clearly lost too Lebedev, Afolabi & Arslan. Just a typical fraudulent German paper champion really but he made for a lot of great fights.
It probably has something to do with how badly Guillermo Jones disfigured his face.
As brutal as it was, he should have been famous for having a disfigured face.. It shows the importance of owning towels :lol1:
Bellew as a champ though, I'm happy for him I'm from Liverpool I went the fight against mukabu but he got handled at lightheavy by Stevenson, I've never found Huck too impressive and yet he holds the record for most defenses alongside Johnny Nelson
no, no it hasnt.
Thats not exactly true. It has had its moments, but it has generally been percieved as a weight class for guys to hide out in instead of being heavyweights. I myself felt that way up until a couple years ago, but with the size of heavyweights these days its hard to deny the division needs to exist.
Now looking at the division today it has some really good talent, as in elite, possible p4p talent. Lebedev and Huck are proven commodities, Usyk looks like he could be sensational and the division has a solid top 10 overall as well as some young guys on the come up. Its one of the better divisions in boxing imo.
Oneil Bell vs Jean Marc Mormec 1 for me. Bell became the second undisputed champ after Holyfield. I think David Haye became the third undisputed champ. Haye's dad is Jamaican.
True.. After Haye we had guys like Adameck, Huck, Lebedev & recent additions of Glowacki & Usyk..
But this division has been underrated by far..
