With Kovalev and Ward in the horizon, arguably the two P4P best fighters in the world, both arguably in their primes, it made me wonder how many times has a prime Top 2-3 been taken to school.
We have James Toney P4P #2 getting utterly embarrassed by Roy Jones.
Julio Cesar Chavez P4P #1 schooled by Whitaker. Could argue Chavez wasn't prime.
Mike Tyson P4P #1 beaten up and stopped by Douglas.
Nonito Donaire P4P #3 schooled by Rigondeaux.
Shane Mosley P4P #1 dropped and outboxed by Forrest. Wouldn't call that a schooling myself.
Any other candidates? What was the worst?
Kovalev or Ward may be amongst the list soon who knows.
Toney jones was a classic.
But dont forget how maidana put hands on floyd in their first fight.
Also vernon beating shane
Poor example
Floyd wasn't prime and Maidana didn't even win the fight let alone school him.
That's fine, if you don't want to include roy
Regardless, if it's not that fight, then I gotta go with tyson-buster.. Biggest upset in the history of sports, humiliating one-sided beating and ko from a journeymen.Even the tyson corner was embarrassing.
And Tyson was bizarrely ahead on the cards too.
What does that matter? The thread specifies prime and P4P #1 or not it's clear Roy wasn't in his prime.
Mayweather was higher regarded than all of them in 2015 he was still way passed his prime.
If a fighter "not looking good" is basis for not being prime then has anyone ever been in their prime?
Toney looked like sh*t against Sosa, Nunn, Johnson and Tiberi in the lead up to the Jones fight was he in his prime?
If Mosley wasn't in his prime in 2002 then I think that's news to everyone.

I took into account the following aspects of the fights in the poll:
Weight shinanigans (was someone weight drained, was someone dragged down or up, did the loser belong in another weight class)
Was it 50-50, or was one of them better
Was there any external issues going on in the loser's life (an underrated aspect of boxing)
In this case I picked Rigondeaux vs Donaire
Out of interest, which fights do you think these apply to?
Outside of Tyson-Douglas being the obvious one.
Mosely was pretty much on top of the world but really hadn't looked good in any of his welter defenses after beating Oscar...
Roy was still recognized as the best fighter on the planet. He was more highly regarded at the time of his defeat than anyone on the poll

Well I already said on the OP that Chavez was arguably passed it if you read it.
Donaire's another arguable one.
Mosley wasn't prime when he fought Forresst? Ok that one I've never heard before.
All of the above were closer to their primes than Roy Jones was anyway. Fact of the matter is he wasn't in his prime it's really that simple.

I voted for Tyson's loss to Douglas, because not only is it a major loss in his prime, but also a major upset.
If Ward beats Kovalev or vica versa, it's a great win for either but not an upset no matter who wins.
Duran/SRL is missing from this poll, as someone already mentioned.
Also, I disagree with you saying JMM wasn't prime when Floyd beat him Irondamhanza. And please don't point at age as a rebuttal, age doesn't tell you when a fighter is in his prime at all, and not all fighters enter/leave their prime around the same time in their careers either. JMM didn't lose a beat until his second to last Manny fight IMO. I would have to see overwhelming evidence otherwise, evidence in previous fights and training camps.
Marquez was arguably at his peak age wise but at Welterweight he definitely wasn't at his peak weight. His first fight there also.
I don't see how you can use chavez but not roy jones...
Roy was still considered the best fighter in the world at the time, and everybody thought he would "montel" tarver in the rematch..
Half the dudes on your own poll were past it..
Donaire,,, what's he done since
Chavez,,
Mosely was never the same after forrest, afterwards basically lost every big fight besides margarito
Tyson and toney are the only guys that were actually at their peak

It was widely believed he was one of the 3 best fighters in the world even if he was past prime. Mayweather has been past prime the last 5 years but he was still P4P #1. P4P is opinion, if it's nonsense then every you think is nonsense also.
Isn't it insane how such recent history can be revised so much?
The Mosley fight was 6 years ago. Not long ago. Feels like yesterday to be honest.
After he beat the ever lovwrong sh*t out of "The most feared man in Boxing" Margarito he was considered to be extremely dangerous.
P4P top 3 on any list you can find.
When Shane got in the ring after the Marquez fight and challenged Floyd, so many people said Floyd was ducking him and would never fight him. Not just fans on here, the media, boxing people etc etc etc.
Fast forward to today and we've got people saying Mosley wasn't top 10, Mosley only ranked their because it was The Ring Magazine, Margarito wasn't top 10 when he beat him.
It's crazy man.
He was no where near close.
Regardless it doesn't matter how close he was to his prime he definitely wasn't prime.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet... because I cba to read 11 pages... especially with the nature of boxingscene... most of that will be trolling and name calling anyway xD
But what about Don Curry getting schooled by Honeyghan? Curry was undefeated and at the peak of his powers and would have been considered a top 3 P4P fighter by most (I think)....?
Awesome example.
Yes you're right, Curry was top 3 P4P when Honeyghan beat him up.
Another one that completely slipped my mind.
There's quite a few examples of this.
He was pretty close, still considered #1 or 1A. Probably at the same stage as pernell and Chavez
If not roy, then I gotta say tyson.. He got beat up and knocked out by a journeymen.
Everyone else at least went to decision and were facing a top p4p guy
He was no where near close.
Regardless it doesn't matter how close he was to his prime he definitely wasn't prime.

I would say either jones or Rigo
