They should combine Kovalev-Ward and the Cotto PPV.
Cotto and Ward have the same promoter.
That seems like the most sensible thing to do, but maybe it's also too expensive. Kovalev/Ward will probably cost more than Postol/Crawford or Garcia/Matthysse did.
RN can't afford to not have Cotto on ppv, HBO isn't putting up significant money to meet his crazy minimum. I wouldn't be surprised if Cotto sits out til next year. Too bad he doesn't want any real fights like Lara or the winner of J-Rock/Charlo, I'd pay for those.
I think if Canelo/Saunders happens, it'll have to be ppv to afford those two. BJS will likely want atleast $4mill.
Lmao... You must be someone's mom
1. 25-35%. From 38 million subscribers that would be like 8-9 million.. Why is the highest rated boxing less than 4 million and usually between 1-3 million
2 what does my figures for hbo boxing matter,, it's in obvious decline. And there is numerous reports saying they spent 150 million in the late 90s early 2000s.
If your so knowledgable, give us a year by year breakdown of what hbo spends on boxing
3. You're an idiot thinking hbo doesn't make money off PPV.. There's a reason why hbo is only investing in kovolev, GGG, Canelo fights. Those are the only guys they see as becoming long term ppv stars. Guys like vargas and lennox could easily get over 250k if not 300k and higher. It's no coincidence that while PPv Stars have dropped so has hbo's budget... It's beyond stupid to think networks don't make money off PPV.. That's why hbo is paying money for crap like Ward-brand,, they are only paying in the hopes of Ward-kovolev being a big PPv... Lennox and roy may never be 1 mil+ PPv stars, but they always drew above 250k buys or higher.. And they were never the "stars" of their generation compared to guys like Evander and Oscar.. Now hbo's biggest star canelo cant break 1mil buys in the biggest fight in boxing vs cotto. The 2nd biggest star in Golovkin can't break 175k in buys,,, fvcking pretty boy floyd had over 320k with baldomir,,, tyson vs mcbride did 220k.. Yet now the 2nd biggest star on hbo boxing, Golovkin can't break 175k..
Take notes, son. You might learn something here.
1. There is a big different between live viewership (which is what ratings measure) and responding to a survey saying you're at least somewhat interested in boxing.
2. HBO's boxing budget peaked at $55M in 2004 and 2005. Has been on a slow decline since then. 2013 it was $35M. This year it's about half that.
3. Neither HBO nor Showtime make big money on PPV. The network gets a 10% distribution fee on PPV revenues - but that 10% is calculated after the cable and satellite take their half. So the networks get 10% of 50%, of 5%. So if a $60 HBO PPV does 1 million buys, that is $60 million in gross revenue, of which HBO gets $3 million dollars. BUT out of that $3M, HBO has to pay for TV production, insurance, T&E, AND the cost of the 24/7 series, which is usually $500K per episode.
That's why HBO isn't doing a 24/7 on Canelo vs. Smith. There's no money in the PPV, so no way for HBO to pay for the 24/7.

Pac and Kov will definitely be PPV.
Depending on the opponent, Cotto may get taken off PPV but I doubt it. HBO knows they'll do solid numbers with Pac, not quite prime numbers but more than anyone else in the sport. Kov v Ward is a big risk though. I'd be surprised if it even does 100k.
FALSE. The percentage of HBO and SHO subscribers who say they follow boxing has been fairly consistent over the years: generally between 25% and 35%.
FALSE. HBO never spent 150M in boxing in a particular year. The highest the HBO budget for all of sports has ever been is $100M, which was more than a decade ago - and that $100M was for docs, Inside the NFL, boxing and everything else.
Nope. There is no such thing as the network making tons of $ in PPV. Never in the history of boxing has the network made "tons" of money from PPV.
FALSE. Roy, Vargas and Lennox were never reliable PPV draws. Roy only topped 500K buys twice, and Vargas and Lennox were B-sides. Morales & Barrera were only PPV draws against each other, and Prince was never a PPV draw in the U.S.

November is going to be a hell of a month for boxing if Manny fights Crawford...and who knows what PBC/Showtime might put on in that month too.
I really hope they do some sort of 24/7 build up to the Ward/Kovalev fight.
Hbo doesn't want to spend money on boxing. It's a dead sport in America. Boxing fans are about 5% of total subscribers, hbo gets a lot more return from their shows like sopranos, game of thrones, true blood, etc. They are trimming back on boxing and spending the money on TV series. FALSE. The percentage of HBO and SHO subscribers who say they follow boxing has been fairly consistent over the years: generally between 25% and 35%.
Hbo use to spend 150 mil on boxing, but now just a fraction due to the waning popularity.

HBO's whole plan in boxing was to spend money promoting fighters on regular hbo, and long term, make tons in PPV.. But now the sport is so badly managed, that in America their is a lack of star power. Nope. There is no such thing as the network making tons of $ in PPV. Never in the history of boxing has the network made "tons" of money from PPV.
Remember a decade ago, hbo had major PPv draws in roy, Oscar, vargas, lennox and also had guys like prince, morales, barrera, floyd that could still do 300-500k.. Now the 2nd biggest star Golovkin can't even break 200k. FALSE. Roy, Vargas and Lennox were never reliable PPV draws. Roy only topped 500K buys twice, and Vargas and Lennox were B-sides. Morales & Barrera were only PPV draws against each other, and Prince was never a PPV draw in the U.S.
If that's the way it goes, That's pretty f.ucked up on HBO part
They have to know that there going to be taking buys away from each other.
I don't think this is HBO's choice. Pac is unretiring, that's ppv. Cotto they'd love to put on regular Hbo but he's got some insane guarantee. That's RNs problem so they'll have to take the hit on ppv.
.... why in the hell is Ward-Kovalev on PPV? Neither guy has a fan base for that. Itll do 100k.
Hbo can't pay those purses. The promoters will take a bath instead
I'm not saying these are bad PPv, manny and cotto are legit PPV draws, and ward-kovolev is the best matchup of the year
They need to make 1 a month over October, November, December instead of 3 in 4 weeks
To answer your question, I'm not sure about exact costs, but hbo payed a pretty penny in recent years for expensive fights like
Hopkins-calzaghe
Ward-dawson
Hopkins-dawson 2
Wlad-haye
Wlad-Povetkin
I can tell you Hbo paid very little for the Wlad fights. Those afternoon euro shows come cheap.
danrafaelespn Dan Rafael
Purses for Sat card in Oakland as per California commission: Ward $1,367,500; Dawson $600K; DeMarco $180K; Molina $85K #boxing #WardDawson
Dawson Hopkins was probably same ballpark. The cheapest of these is Ward Kovalev and that's probably 7-8m combined at least
Roger that. I know what youre using and I'm doing G the same thing. However, I will still buy things that are worth while.
Also my "thing" has also paid or itself.
Cheers bruv!
I went to the dark side and stream all PPV. I paid $150 and have watched 6 PPV already so it paid for itself

And I'm only buying the one that's actually PPV worthy which is Kovalev Ward. If Pacquiao fights Crawford then I'm buying two. But I'm not paying for trash, any longer.
Ams I don't care if hindsight provides that they're all three great fights. **** that.

PAC vs Crawford is PPV worthy so is PAC vs Garcia or Thurman
Anyone else is not PPV worthy
Ward kovo isn't ppv worthy both aren't big names to casuals ( like it or not they run the sport) so this fight will flop
Cotto is ridiculous asking for $15 mil a fight
He is way past prime and damaged goods no way is he PPV worthy at this point

That's all true but when is the last time a fight as expensive as any of these was on regular Hbo?
