The only major fights at 160 are Canelo, Jacobs and Saunders, none of which will happen this year. He turns 35 next year and father time is undefeated in boxing. His options include:
1. Camp out at 160 and fight fringe contenders and up and comers until the big fights come along.
What I like about this
This option keeps him the most active, allows him to continue to chase the record for MW title defenses and will put pressure on the other top fighters to make the big fight happen. Plus a fight with Eubank will increase his name recognition in the UK which could potentially get Saunders the ridiculous dollars he's looking for.
What I dislike about this
His recent level of opposition has been subpar and I cannot stand to see another Dominic Wade/Willie Monroe Jr. type opponent. Also, at age 35, father time will catch him at some point and I would hate to see the career of a fighter of this caliber be controlled by Canelo.
2. Go after some top fighters at 154 such as Lara, Andrade and the Charlos.
What I like about this
There was a point in time where these junior divisions did not exist. Their existence has really watered down the sport. Imagine how strong a combined 154/160 division would be. To me, these wins enhance his resume against higher caliber of opposition than exists at 160.
What I dislike about this
Even if he beats a top fighter at 154 he will not receive full credit for beating up on a smaller guy moving up in weight.
3. Move up to 168
What I like about this
Many of the ATG's of the past all moved up in weight and established themselves as elite fighters in several weight classes. Plus, fighters with size advantages may be more willing to fight him.
What I dislike about this
Since Ward left the division this move has become less intriguing. Outside of Jack and Degale, fighters are still mostly unproven (Zurdo), past prime (Abraham, Bute) or have already proven to be nothing more than fringe contenders (The Dirrels).
4.Shoot for the top
What I like about this
Challenging the winner of Ward/Kovalev would take balls and a victory would solidify ATG status.
What I don't like about this
I just don't think he can beat those guys and the risk is not worth the reward.
Thoughts?
The goddamn plan should be to fight Eubank in September, Then Jacobs in January, BJS in May and Canelo in September.
If GGG can get one just one ppv with 400k+ buys, then this is all possible. He needs to make these wimps believe that the pay is greater than the loss for them.
He has the makeup of a great PPV star, KO power, great chin and fan friendly style.
I would say stay at 160 and bring up the best 154 pounder he can to 160, sure he will take a slight ding in the credit for fighting a really good smaller man but at least it would be a really good smaller man. Plus some of those 154 pounders like the Charlos and Andrade are tall rangy dudes for 154 (more rangy than Golovkin), Lara is a bit shorter but has a long reach for his height (longer than Golovkin). So those guys from 154 should be able to hang and at least cause Golovkin some issues to solve.
Obviously not ideal but beating a really good smaller man is better than beating a larger no-hoper. Plus this gives time for the rest of 160 to hopefully come up with better wins to raise their profile which needs to happen anyway and benefits Golovkin greatly.
I really want to say both stay at 160 and wait for big names WHILE looking for some names at 168 and 154. Keep a middle ground so he can pick and choose from bother 154, 160, and 168.
I've been calling for the Lara fight for at least 18 months now. There's really no reason why the promoters can't make this fight. Lara's the most technically skilled 154lber and would be Golovkin best opponent to date.
Same situation than Jacobs. They want millions and they bring no fans.
I voted he should stay at his best and natural weight of 160 and fight the best middleweights who agree to fight him. He already probably has a nice, well paying fight coming up with high rated middleweight Eubanks Jr. For a 34 year smallish middleweight to move up a full 15 pounds to fight the winner of two great fighters, Kovalev and Ward is a bad idea and it's unfair to ask him to do so. He might well be a better fighter than either of them pound for pound but 15 pounds is way too much weight to give up to give up to boxers the quality of Kovalev and Ward..
I feel he should stay at 160. He should go along with things with the notion that the Canelo fight still may not happen in 2017. As to me, Canelo still isn't showing any signs he wants the fight.
Eubank is a good start. How many fights would we be talking about before the proposed Canelo fight..2 more? If that's the case. Eubank and Saunders/Jacobs would be ideal.
Obviously then the whole Haymon/HBO thing will rear it's head. As well as the fact that guys like BJS may want bigger larger realistic purses.
But ideally, if they can make MW fights like that, then that wouldn't be bad.
As for Canelo, i wouldn't be surprised to see him face Smith next. Lemieux at 160 would be decent penultimate fight to GGG.
I just hope both guys take decent fights in the mean-time, and that the fights can be made without any problems (which would probably be unlikely).
I will be disappointed if we see either guy take 'safe' fights as the proposed 2017 date gets nearer..as to be honest, i don't see Canelo Vs GGG happening anyway. And then the whole 'build up' starting as of now, would of been a waste of time.

You pretty much answered all the relevant questions yourself lol What's left to discuss?
Personally, I think his best option is to unify ALL the titles at middleweight which leaves just the WBO. That means the BJS fight next year, after the terrific Eubank Jr match up. Basically, the route Hopkins went down.
By the end of 2017, GGG would likely have had the Canelo fight and KOd him too. So he would have every middleweight belt and have beaten a money name.
After that, he can od as he please, stay and defend his championship, one of the few "true" championships in the sport or fight whoever the top SMW is at that time.
Eubank is OK for now and hopefully he gets Jacobs or Saunders after. I don't mind the top 154 guys either.
Chances are low that he'll move up soon - 1 because doing so essentially dissolves any possibility of a Canelo fight (which pays the most) and - 2 because there aren't really established names there. If he does move up the DeGale/Jack winner is an excellent fight to take.
lara has never fought at 160, and has a loss to canelo alvarez. he's also got a draw with vanes, a draw with molina that could easily be a molina win, and he got knocked aroudn the ring by alfredo freaking angulo prior to the stoppage.
that's not a better win than martin murray, who could easily have been the MW champion of the world when he fought golovkin. or lemieux, a contender at 160 lbs with knockout punching power.
there have been cases where one could argue that a fighter from a weight class below would be the best opponent a champion from the weight above has faced, but typically those are discussions of legit pound for pound fighters, or a case where the smaller fighter is the higher ranked p4p fighter.
lara isn't close to the p4p list. if you've got him there you're not even looking as far back as 2014, when he didn't do enough to beat canelo, even when canelo didn't do much at all himself.
people bring lara up as a boogyman. in part because he's a guy golovkin can't fight, or at least it's a fight that's going to be tough to make.
make no mistake, hbo and k2 would sign that fight tomrorow if lara took the 100K willie monroe took, or even the 500K that dominic wade took. the problem is that lara and his people aren't going to take that kind of money to fight golovkin. you need a willie wade for that now that golovkin is commanding high ratings and earning more than a million dollars for a regular hbo fight.
if you want to see lara - golovkin it will be on PPV. don't know what kind of obligation lara has to showtime, but golovkin has an obligation to HBO by all accounts. at the very least, he's obligated to them in the sense that on hbo is where the biggest fight in boxing is goign to happen, the focus of golovkin's career under any sound business plan, a fight with canelo in 2017.
The problem is, we're in mid 2016 with no viable opponents on the horizon for Golovkin. Jacobs doesn't want to fight 'em, Sanders has priced himself out, Canelo is out and Cotto is damaged goods - maybe Andy Lee?
Gennady is in his prime right now and it seems like he's wasting it fighting unknowns guys who don't pose any threat to him. He's a superstar but he doesn't have a credible dance partner. At least with Lara, I think boxing fans embrace that fight - whether that's warranted or not.

:lol1: :lol1:
he should fight Lara...can Lara fight on HBO?
That's the question. If they allowed Willie Monroe and Dominic Wade I'm sure they can bring Lara into the mix. They blow money on Andre Ward vs. Elton Brand and GGG vs. Dwyane Wade. And put fights like Crawford/Postol on PPV.
I just don't see why they wouldn't consider this.
Golovkin is the biggest b*tch in boxing IMO. Wants everything his own way. Not willing to move up or down. How Americans can support him and not their own fighter shocks me. F*ck him. He will retire an no one will remember him because he wasn't willing to budge and fought no one. F*cking p*ssy.
have a stay busy fight vs Malinaggi...then Broner...then Danny Garcia
Paulie KO's Golovkin in 4 with a grazing jab.
Too risky Mak. You want to see the Good Boy leave on a stretcher ?
If his next fight is Eubank, that means his resume for the year is Dominic Wade(who?) and Chris Eubank, a promising young fighter, but all hes beaten have been domestic level guys. That's truly a waste of a year for anyone considered one of the top fighters in boxing. I remember a few months back we had a thread of people ****ting on Errol Spence for fighting Algieri and then Bundu later this year. Where is the frikkin disconnect???
He should stay at 160, his natural division where the playing field is fairly even, and unify the titles
When he has done that, he can move up and have his 'legacy' fights if the division starts to heat up.
I really want him to beat Saunders/Jacobs/Canelo/Eubank at 160 first though/get all four belts, but then he would be too old to move up. So what I'm hoping is: if he can't fight one of those guys, then a fight at 168 would be great (depending on the opponent).
Unfortunately, the haters will swarm him and call him a bum if he loses, but it is what it is. They will ignore the fact that out of the top 10 SMWs, only one is shorter than him (Abraham), that he has basically the shortest reach (shorter than Abraham), and is also the smallest in terms of weight at this division.
Not even Floyd fought an, "Andre Ward" level of opponent that was in their prime when he moved up. He was never shorter/had lesser reach against 95% of his opponents. Only person that comes to mind that was bigger, is ODLH and he was already shot. It would be kind of like, Floyd fighting Lara at 154.
Yeah. The GGG fans have been killing Ward (and rightfully so) for HBO giving him 2 tuneups before Kov. Now they are doing the same thing for GGG before Canelo.
its 2 totally different situations'
Ward was inactive because he had litigation issues, couldnt fight and injuries....GGG has been the most active big name fighter in the game and what has he done? He beat Lemieux for a belt and had one given to him
its smart management not to put a rusty guy in too tough off the rip...at least he is fighting Kov in november and he is in a new division
At least Ward has been in with top guys, elite guys....GGG is supposed to be p4p # 3 or 1 to some, then watch his fights and his opponents and he clearly fights overmatched no names.
Ward would be getting the bizness from me if Kov wasnt looming but come on...we wont see GGG vs Canelo til next yeat and in the mean time we'll be fed "mis-mandatories"...guys we never heard of, on house arrest, but he the "mandatory doe!!!"
this horse ride has gotten old....FVCK K2 and GGG unless they have a fight signed to fight a top 5 middleweight or someone top 5 at 154 or 168
Lemmie was a step in the right direction but the belts seem like a bargaining chip to get Canelo in the ring, and also a way to rack up victories and pad his record vs Cans...well he is the can man...any can, can get it.
