GENNADY GOLOVKIN is the 29th most marketable athlete on the planet, according to SportsPro, while potential rival Canelo Alvarez is not included in their top 50.
The Kazakh wrecking ball recently signed a lucrative sponsorship deal with Nike’s Air Jordan brand, and has also done advertising for the Apple Watch.
Golovkin’s and Canelo’s respective teams are currently locked in negotiations for what would be the biggest fight in boxing, though Canelo’s recent vacation of his WBC middleweight strap suggests his side may want to hold off on the contest for now.
Canelo, boxing’s biggest box office draw, would be the A side of that fight, though the recent revelation over Golovkin’s marketability adds further credence to the argument that the Mexican very much needs to face ‘GGG’.
SportsPro’s criteria for marketing potential is as follows:
Value for money
Age
Home market
Charisma
Willingness to be marketed
Crossover appeal
Their profile of Golovkin reads:
“With Manny Pacquiao and – for now, at least – Floyd Mayweather in retirement, the fight game’s biggest draw for fans and sponsors is Golovkin’s fellow middleweight Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. The teak-tough, strawberry blond Mexican has left his most obvious opponent to stew, in keeping with boxing’s best and most maddening traditions. Yet having coldly dispatched Britain’s Amir Khan – whose big talent and big heart could not compensate for a bigger jump in weight – in a May mega-fight, Alvarez would be fooling no one by denying his Kazakh nemesis a chance.
“If the two do meet, it will be a huge occasion and a chance for sponsors to flock to a fighter with burgeoning appeal. Golovkin, through his chilling knockout exploits in the ring and his abundant charm beyond the ropes, has won plenty of fans since making more regular appearances in the US. Were he to win an encounter with Canelo, his years in the relative wilderness might all have been worthwhile.
The reason Canelo vacated was because he believes 55-45 isn't fair but according to this website gg is more marketable
Canelo status has been manufactured just as every star in the past has been. That has nothing to do with his basic marketability. He was created because he had money behind him and he came at the right time and place...just like anyone who becomes a big success. His status being higher than Golovkin's status isn't the question that was posed in this thread. The question is "Which fighter is the more marketable fighter?", not which fighter was given the silver spoon and golden boy status.
GGG is much more marketable in personality and fighting style, in and out of the ring. Nobody gives a crap that Canelo has red hair and freckles. Mexicans may love Canelo but that doesn't mean he's marketable. Let's see who has the better "marketability" after Canelo and Golovkin fight.......haha.
What a dumb post bro
Everyone including me Hate redheads

first of all, this is most probably another aldo thread where he can unloads all his hate... lol
secondly, it seems that everybody is getting the term "marketability" wrong here...
this is not from a boxing perspective only...its about demographics, personalities, etc....not only the A side or b side purses or PPV buys...
with all that said....I think Canelo could easily surpass GGG because of his age....but for now this ranking is making a point...you may like it or not...its just and opinion and to me is a non-boxing related..so I give 0 f... about it.
Hey bro this is a serious thread
I did not know, but the problem about GGG is that age is catching up with him. It's such a shame that he first popped up, when he was already over 30 years of age. He's simply too old, he has a small window I believe to really do anything, we're talking 2-3 years. Unless he's a genetic freak. And once again, we gotta remember that GGG's resume really isn't all that great. Canelo has a far better resume and is wise to stay away from GGG for a couple of years, businesswise, sucks for us though.
Yeah man he fought in front of the prince of Monaco and it was sold out and everything. Also he has been in Korean media
also lets not forget that gg is a superstar in Morocco and Monaco

No Canelo is a 25 year old red headed Mexican, while GGG is a 34 year old fighter, both are marketable but Canelo is by far the bigger star and has a much bigger upside as he is so young
I agree...especially if they keep putting him in with guys he can ko spectacularly. His KOs of kirkland and khan are better highlight reel material than anything ggg has done since he dropped stevens...and that's mainly due to stevens reaction.
The article is a clickbait article leaching of an article posted by another site. Check out my post from the first page. I got that info from a site that tracks advertising. This article has 3 basketball players and none of them name Lebron James. How serious can you take them without Lebron James on the list?
who is Lebron James? Another marihuana 7 foot tall dude?
It's possible that GGG might someday surpass Canelo as a money maker if Canelo lost a fight or two and GGG got some top fighters in the ring with him so he could KO them. Right now Canelo generates much more money so he makes much more money. It's not even close.
Marketability isn't just purse split or bigger star, even though that is what it sounds like, otherwise Floyd would have been the most marketable guy in boxing... but to be honest it was impossible to market floyd from a corporate perspective because he has bad history.
Canelo is more famous, is more known and has a decent image though it has taken a hit recently, if you also consider his skill level then there is a chance he would lose soon enough to a decent fighter where his marketability could go down. Also he has had legal issues which makes him less marketible (he beat up a midget fighter and now going through contractual litigation)
As a fighter GGG will be more dominant but has a shorter time horizon in the spot light due to age, also has a very good image among majority of boxing fans. No Scandals, squicky clean. As a corporation i would want someone like GGG to use for my marketing vs. Canelo, will i get more exposure? likely not but that doesn't necessarily mean i'll get worse results in the long term.
Lets put it this way, in terms of investment.
Canelo is large cap somewhat speculative/growth stock, while GGG is a mid cap blue chip stock.
GGG has hard eyes. You can tell he's not some random pretty boy punk.
Canelo on the other hand comes off as more stoic but he's actually a well spoken charismatic dude. GGG is a killer and with some wins WILL be martketable but Canelo has that air around him like he's a king in a country of fighters. He's light skinned, "good looking" (no homo but thats all I hear from chicks "Oh canelo my husband " this and that) and he has an extremely flashy way of fighting while still seeming "mexican". He's an agressive counter puncher who doesn't back up. Canelo was just born to be a star. Maybe not an atg (hey you never know) but dude oozes that quiet dignity/charisma that you only see in boxers.
agree on canelo's charisma. my spanish isn't great, but i can tell that he's an articulate guy. and you really don't need to know the spanish to know that he's got "it."
some of the bsceners have been taking away from canelo's charisma becase of their resentment of his matchmaking. my brother, a casual fan who might watch a couple of fights a year, says canelo, "looks like a comic book character." that sounds about right to me :lol1:. casuals understand that, and are drawn to it. that's charisma.
All you have to do is look at the numbers. Canelo's fights make much more money and because of that Canelo is paid much more money. He might be the biggest money maker in boxing today. GGG is the better fighter but then GGG is about the best fighter in the world. Canelo generates much more money than GGG and probably anyone else as well.
Canelo has youth on his side but Golovkin has a more marketable personality and fighting style. A KO artist has an advantage when it comes to marketability.
This sounds about right. Canelo may have a dull personality and he doesn't look great in every fight, but he is a Mexican and his career probably isn't even half way over. Lot of upside to Canelo. GGG is more charismatic and speaks English at least good enough. Also has a KO streak.
No he is not. If he was he would of sold more then 150K PPVs. Canelo draws bigger crowds can fill baseball stadiums (see Trout and Kirkland), has better ticket sales (owns 3 of the top 30 highest live gates in NV history) when he fights on regular HBO basically doubles GGG tv ratings (see Kirkland fight 2.2m viewers), did 4X or more PPVs his last 2 fights then GGG, has bigger and better sponsors (tecate paying him a ton to make him the face of their brand). There is literally nothing that is in GGG's favor.

Outside of southamerica yes, but Canelo will eventually, and probably already is, a much bigger star than GGG will ever be.
also lets not forget that gg is a superstar in Morocco and Monaco
