We hear oscar calling canelo 'the man in boxing.' But who can canelo fight that would help keep his star power? He doesn't exactly have big names atm to really sell to the public while avoiding ggg.
Even when floyd and Manny weren't fighting each other, they had big names like cotto, shane, marquez, etc to make big fights. Canelo is not as big as either floyd or pac, and no current 'b side' fighters are as big as any of the ones I mentioned.
Bjs, jacobs, and lemiuex don't seem keen on fighting below 160 (where canelo wants to fight). All the top 154 guys are with haymon. So who does that leave? Stevens? Rosado? Another blown up ww?
I'm wondering why GGG is the only one interested in the Mexican superstar, except Lemieux.
Haven't heard from Jacobs, Saunders, Quillin, etc.
Well bjs and lemiuex said they wouldn't fight below 160. Idk if canelo is still trying to force the cw after he said weight wouldn't be an issue. I have no idea about jacobs or quillin I don't think they've said anything recent regarding a fight with canelo
I'm not sure Pac and Floyd were doing these type numbers at 24-25 yrs old, were they? Beyond that, doing the consistent 1 mil ppv's in there time is somewhat of an anomaly. With that said Canelo seems to be an par or doing better numbers than both of we went age-age.
Canelo could get that work, if only ggg would concede to his demands, right?
So my OP still stands.
Floyd and Manny were being groomed to be superstars at the same age, whereas canelo is being labeled as the current face of boxing. And they fought their biggest threats at the time. Corrales, castillo, barrera, morales, marquez. What is canelos excuse for not fighting his?
Well let's see...he just fought Amir fookin khan and cleared probably 10 million in the biggest ppv fight of the year thus far. So pretty much anybody.
That was with the assumption that he was fighting ggg next. Now that that's not happening, his stock has plummeted alot, even casuals can see his duck.
And amir is a decent name, what other decent names are there to fight? Mayweather rematch ain't happening. Pac fight is a stretch. No one is really clamoring for a cotto rematch.
Floyd rematch at 54, Pacquiao, Cotto rematch, any of the new blood at 54. Lots of options.
Two of those are retired and 20lbs+ smaller, and there's no demand for the Cotto rematch. Sure he can make some money there but lose even more respect, if possible

Yeah true except there's no Dlh for him to fight and boost his standing. His only respectable Ppv option is Ggg and you know what just happened there
There isn't any superstars in boxing for him to fight. He's all by himself with the retirement of Floyd and Manny.
I guess GGG and Ward.
That would be an awesome fight. Canelo - Ward at 168.

He is but turns out he's nowhere near where Floyd and Pac were in their heyday, and he's just lost a ton of respect. The only way to redeem himself is to fight Ggg soon enough and then he takes a lot of punishment and gets knocked out

How much less, How does it get worse now? Makes no sense. Was it not the biggest ppv of the year so far? Is he not the highest paid fighter in the game right now?

Probably less, it tanked. It gets worse now that he's the butt of jokes

It's almost kinda funny how much Mayweather and Pacquiao skewed people's idea of what a successful PPV is. Canelo vs GGG probably doesn't break a million. Meanwhile Pac vs Clottey or Mayweahter vs Ortiz were crappy fights but just below a million.
Very good point. I guess canelo isnt the Draw that his team wants us to believe.

Canelo vs ggg would be a superfight right now. Any combination of floyd-manny-canelo fighting each other would be a superfighit but are unlikely to happen
Correct, even though Triple G's first PPV numbers were a bit soft the combination of Canelo along with Triple G makes a superfight. Sometimes the whole is greater than the parts.
If we take it that Floyd and Manny really are retired (big if) this is the biggest fight that can made in boxing right now outside of probably Fury and Joshua.
Could have already have had a Ward this year by now, but he ducked him, so oh well.
Wrong thread? This one is about Canelos options after being made into a laughing stock
The only superfight is ggg. If he doesnt fight him, he needs to try and clean his division out. If he does that, he doesnt necessarily need a superfight right now.
That makes sense. He could somewhat save face by doing that. I guess the way gbp has been promoting him though, you'd think that he could have a superfight with anyone even if it's not ggg. But there really is no one for him
