Let's say like under a "FIFA type" organization with world wide rules, sanctions, and rules.
These are the types of rules boxing needs IF I was the boss!
-one champion per division
-only 10 weight division(105,112,118,126,135,147,160,175,200, & Heavyweight +201)
-no catchweights for title fight
-same day weight in(4 hours before the actual fight)
-standard 18×18ft ring
-mandatory champion vs #1 contender once per year(if negotiations fall #1 contender vs #2 contender fight for the belt)
Thoughts? What are some changes or new rules or technology does boxing need?
1 organisation, with two belts. Unifications are exciting when done well. Not sure what you'd call the titles, just not 'world championships'
But its a dream anyway
What boxing really needs is a set of bonafide rankings that ignores any championships, that people can follow. Snooker is a sport that has both rankings, and a world championship. The World no.1 can be different from the current World Champion, but they are often a unified title. Snooker and boxing are inherently different in structure, but boxing definitely needs something similar in an age of multiple world titles, and multiple ranking organisations that adhere to a 'lineal' system as an excuse not to think and be critical.
I don't have a problem with the current amount of weight classes. Especially if there was same day weigh ins. You'd have guys fighting some pretty big dudes if you cant squeeze that extra pound off to make 47 gm(as an example). 1 champion per division is ideal but boxing is such a big sport at this stage that you'd have guys holding titles hostage. 1 belt means corruption would be blatant and opressive for the non-champions. We'd see top fighters never fight for a title because we'd have a Floyd Mayweather type guy holding a title hostage and will be given preferential treatment due to the obscene amount of money involved. Non-profit opens up the problems for back door profiting.
Boxing isn't like any other sport..lives are on the line and some of those things are just unrealistic in the fight game.
Look at the ufc's one champion structure... Take Holly Holm for example. Loses her fight, no rematch (not that I dont agree with it but...) yet Rousey was being offered one vs Holm and now the new champ.
The belts are like a necessary evil...though it's not a problem if all 4 are willing to unify. I think a better structure would be a separate body with no belts who controls unifications. There should be some sort of pattern at least.. Like one voluntary every 2-3 fights. One unification after a voluntary and mando. If all belts are unified, the "neutral" (lol) guys will hold lotteries with the 4 mandos of each belt and lets say WBC's mando wins the lottery.. Then the unified champ fights the WBC's mando.. That person is removed from the "list" and the remaining mandatories fight each other via another lottery with those winners fighting the winner..etc etc. yeah, the belts will be unified at some point so its like having 1 belt but due to injuries, vacating, or whatever circumstances it might not always be easy to get all the titles in one place. This at least ensures there's constantly movement towards a unified champ and guys not being ducked for long and avoided via politics. We'd not have the adonis stevensons of the world running around for extended periods of time avoiding the top comp. We'd have Canelo having to fight GGG as a fellow major title holder AND because GGG is the mandatory. Things like that would just fall into place and Canelo would have no choice but to fight GGG as he'd have no option to fight a different champ.
change ring to 20x20-vegas standard
adjust weight classes a bit
don't use FIFA as a model for anything as that is the most corrupt organization other than the IOC.
I still think FIFA has a lot to learn from the WBC
