Why is it such a big deal? I mean, it's only 5 pounds from 155 to 160. (Using Canelo/golovkin as an example) why is everybody so up in arms about a few pounds and what is the importance of it?
Absolutely. GGG puts on 7-11 pounds, something like that from weigh in to fight night. Candelita puts on 20 plus pounds coming into the ring weighing what a super middle weight might weigh.
I have zero doubt that he is substantially bigger than GGG on fight night. He looked like a giant compared to Cotto in the ring and Cotto is a legit 155 pound boxer.
Candelita :lol1:
Canelo is likely naturally bigger than GGG. Just an observation.

GSP explains it very well here.
Go to 4.45
Your body doesn't react the same way when it's heavier. When everything is about split-seconds then that's something you have to take seriously.
Well, you're willing to go to 154 if you have the advantage and 164 when you have the advantage. But you won't go to 155 for certain fighters or 168 for other certain fighters because you will lose and the media creation is over.
That's how it works. All the whilst it's called trying to unify the MW titles, you know, "integrity."
Also if you can beg you way into a fight with Cotto or Hopkins in the meantime, so be it.

It's not 5 pounds. It's really 15-20 pounds. A middleweight typically comes into the ring between 170-175. Their body is used to cutting down to 160 because normally a trainer will tell you to fight at the minimum weight that your body can handle.
So cutting down to 173 to 160 is already a chore. Now they are asking you to cut an additional 5 pounds? That's a lot.
Ward? lol ''Ward too much for me...just...he's great champion..just..'' - Lil'G (2013)
Ward "168 or no fight"
He ducked it surely because Ward had nothing to offer you can't win a SMW title at 172lbs.
Yeah we heard it all before. Pac should've fought Floyd in 2010. 6+ years everybody agrees Top Rank failed with it.
Therefore, people will still say that Lil'G never came to Alvarez's demands if supposedly 154-168 was easy! All on tape forever!
But don'T worry, the voluntary defense to make Money off Khan will end soon entitled to a new title or lineal holder is justified. The mandatory everyone is crying about is yet to come or be announced.
Canelo or no Canelo that belt will go to GGG If the coward doesn't man up and face his fears a bit like Ward needed to do i.e. man up come down to 160lbs If he wanted it so much but obviously Ward was living off of the history of something that happened 5/6 years ago.
It doesn't even matter which guy is bigger or smaller. It's all about age. You can cut a LOT more weight and still be OK after it doing so when you're in your 20s. That's why Canelo used to be able to make 154 and rehydrate to 172 and fight well. He's young.
A 34 year-old's body is not going to tolerate that well AT ALL, Canelo's team knows it (hell every boxer in the world knows that)
... and so I guarantee you if Canelo and his team even have the nuts to take the fight, it'll be 155 or GTFOH because they know that Canelo's chances substantially improve if can fight a guy who is going to feel very weak and sluggish in the ring, because his body won't recover like that of a young man within the 30 hour span between weigh-in and the opening bell.
The best part is Lil'Gs first 160 title bout.... = 0! 6+ years
Alvarez' first title 160 title bout and Lineal.... = 1! couple months ago..
ouch..
You mean he paid for a title shot, so that counts?
Okay doke then, I think the sheer fact Cotto didn't want to fight GGG on ANY terms and that now Canelo doesn't either it speaks volumes about how great GGG really is.
Canelo is a coward for his actions nothing can excuse it, you fight the champions of your division and you fight the guys people want you to fight you're funded by the guys who go to watch you.
It's about time frauds like Canelo get their comeuppance.
Sums it up perfectly. I can't believe there are still some people on here that can not see this/dont see what is wrong.
That and the people who talk like the fight is a voluntary.
There is 1 thing Canelo can do to make it all go away but then he wouldn't be able to pretend he's MW champ lol
There's no problem with it if you don't have a belt.
Once you have a belt you need to defend it at the stated weight or you're holding everyone else back.
Canelo is an extreme case though. He's invented a new form of catchweight. Usually a catchweight is an agreement between two fighters in different divisions to meet half way.
Canelo has raped that concept and just decided the lightest weight he can cut to is a new weight division. Whether you're his middleweight mandatory or a skinny welterweight, you will fight at the arbitrary division he invented. Period.
I think for the first time in my life I've become more interested in MMA than boxing. 175/200/HW are all fun but everything below that in boxing is a total joke. Zero suspense. Everything takes 8 years to sign, then when it finally happens the "A-side" details unravel and it's pretty obvious one guy has a 90% chance of winning to the point that even if it isn't fixed, it might as well be.
Sums it up perfectly. I can't believe there are still some people on here that can not see this/dont see what is wrong.
When you torture your body to get to your fight weight, having someone ask you to take off more is not typically welcomed.
Likewise, when you are able to make weight for a certain weight class and someone asks you to give up several lbs, it plays against your strengths.
People act ignorant like it only works one way, but will flounder depending which fighter they are defending. If we're looking for the truth, it's a negotiation strategy that does affect the fighters and there's merits to both angles.
Not, if you have a belt in a certain class and start making your own weight stipulations, that's another issue entirely.Smallish fighters can drop the weight and look great at a catch weight like Terry Norris against Taylor or Hopkins vs Pavlik. But when a guy is killing himself to make weight the drop can be a disaster like Dawson against Ward. Dawson's career has been a tail spin since the weight cut.
25 year old fighters can drain himself for the weigh in much better than guys that are 35 years old.
They are talking about giving advantages even though Canelo outweighs GGG in the ring on fight night.
They can put a rehydration limit to 170 voila if they really cared about giving no advantages.
But all they care about is try to weaken and drain GGG.
You saw how it affected Dawson, he moved down in weight and was never the same.
The cunt even weighs more on fight night :peeright: :sombrero:
I mean, where's the argument. Canelo's team is just using the weight issue as a negotiating tool.
